I thought McCulloch did great when he was in the booth a few races ago. Look, I don't know who's going to be doing the races this year, and while I liked Mike Dunn a lot, and it sucks to see him go, I'm going to withhold judgement on anything til we find out exactly who is in the booth and I've had the chance to hear them do a broadcast. You have wonder when the axe is going to fall on Dave Reiff. Change is good, although people are hard to accept it sometimes.

Mike Dunn is the only commentator who's worked on the cars, and been in FC/TF fires, and boomers. Unless they got someone else in mind with similar experience.
Ken ... this statement is a little odd. In my opinion, most of the best sports commentators in their business were never in the game. I'll only give a short list ...
  • Vin Scully (LA Dodgers Broadcaster)
  • Al Michaels (NBC NFL Broadcaster, Olympics, MLB)
  • Vern Lundquist (CBS College Football)
  • There are several others ... Bob Costas, Dick Enberg, Keith Jackson
All of these guys have won Emmy's for their work. Who's to say there isn't a future Emmy award winning drag racing announcer sitting in the wings? I DO NOT think you have to have a former drag racer to have a good show.

HOWARD COSELL (NFL Broadcaster) :p

Ugh. I'm just bummed about this. Definitely sounds like he was let go which is just a shame to me. Whoever they have in mind to replace him better be nails right off the trailer. I've been a fan too long and I'm too old to have much patience with a noob.

If things go to spec as FOX Sports has done things in the past, the new crew in the booth may be doing a run through at Pomona using the ESPN feed. Then again they may be last minute hires. Which I hope is not the case.

Willing to see what they come up with, but I really liked Dunn. Like others have said he brings a high level of knowledge and history of the sport to the booth. I like Reiff as well.

Hoping it ends up being a positive move, just don't see it right now

Jim, not to nitpick, but aren't most of these guys play by play announcers? That would be more like what Dave Rieff does. I have always considered Mike Dunn as a color commentator.

Color commentator with a Championship background. Confrontational. Stands up for what he believes. A working knowledge of the owner side as well as the cockpit. Will not back down. That's my preference.

Stop blaming NHRA, NHRA does't employ these guys. ESPN does or did, and now I guess Fox. I pretty sure from working with a lot of networks NHRA has very little say in who they get. They most likely get the right to refusal and that's about it. and an invoice to come later.

I hate NHRA but, In this case, I don't think they are the villain.

Sorry, I thought that the reason they changed networks was so that they would have more say about the broadcasts. Guess they are back to being told what and when they get to broadcast?
