as i said in another thread the idea is for the chassis to break at the motorplate so that in the event there is an engine fire when the car hits the wall or comes apart or whatever the case may be then driver isn't sprayed with oil, fuel, fire or pelted with shrapnel from the motor coming apart....basically get the engine and most of the danger away from the driver

I have only read this page, could one the cones that Bernstein hit possibly have got into John's left rear, I notice an explosion about the same time as the second cone is hit and sent into John's car

On impact with what? That car broke in half with virtually no impact.

I don't believe for a second that that frame is designed to come apart and expose the driver like that. Force is damn lucky he came out of that with as minor of injuries as he did. (if you can call those injuries minor)
I just repeated Dunn's explanation as fact due to his expertise.

That's what I used to think they should be designed, but that hot engine could also windup in your lap, that wouldn't be good either.

I know. I was not trying to insinuate that you were claiming that as fact. I was just making an observation.

Do you think that like Big Daddy's dragster splitting in two, this will lead Force to champion the rear engine funny car? Maybe Big Jim Dunn could give him some advice!

Get well soon Force!

Mike Dunn said that the cars are supposed to break, just that way, on impact on the youtube video.

Mike Dunn didn't say that. It was Paul (I've never sat in a funny car) Page. Mike has driven and worked on enough funny cars to tell you there is no place designed to break off of a funny car chassis. If he did say it I'd be the first to be surprised.

The first step down in frame rail size on most F/C's is ahead of the front motor plate about even with the front of the fuel pumps.

Mike said it, I just replayed the segment.

He said the chassis was supposed to break behind the motor plate.

It was right after the crash.

I had always heard that the cars were designed to break apart to disappate the impact.

You hear them say sometimes "The car broke apart just like it was designed too".

That's the way it looks to me too, Ross.

For that to happen to Force..at the exact moment Kenny wiped the cones out..had to play a part. Small piece launching across. Too much of a coincidence.

Sure glad both are ok..whew.

Other similar quotes:

I spilled hot coffee in my lap...and it burned my (insert comment here) like it was supposed to.

My mother-in law showed up without calling first...just like she always does.

The dentist pulled the wrong tooth...just like I thought he would.

The chassis broke at the seat bar exposing the drivers legs at 300+ miles per hour...just like it was designed to.

Don't worry about the reply you got Jenn.....Mike ("THE GOD") Dunn actually did say that almost word for word as they were attempting to turn the car over to get to John.

I BTW....have nothing against Mike.

it's just when peoples egos and bias let them hear what they want to hear instead of reality is when one shoud speak up......but thats just my opinion:)

Pretty obvious isn't it Ross. I hope Kenny will come out of this OK when they figure it out. It's going to be tough for him to handle.
