Another Top Fuel Team is Parked (1 Viewer)

DP owes us nothing - no explanation - it's HIS business. Personal and professional.

You're right he doesn't owe us anything but he does owe it to CAT to not throw them under the bus if he had just as much to do with pulling out of competition as they did. Just sayin....

Well, I'm watching the CAT/Powers deal with quite a bit of interest because the company I work for is becoming increasingly connected with CAT--not necessarily a bad thing, but when you are building special products and making modifications to products "requested" by CAT to remain on their Allied vendors list, I would really like to find out if CAT pulled out on DP or if it was like several other posters speculated, that DP was unable to come up with his share of the deal and decided to blame CAT. If CAT did welsh on a 3 year contract with DP, it kinda makes me wonder how secure all of our "agreements" with CAT and CAT Rentals really are....inquiring minds want to know--anyone got any more info?

What if CAT let DP out of his contract?

maybe DP's Cat deal wasn't enough to run an entire season and DP was tired of spending his own money..

That's what I was thinking may have happened, maybe that's why Rob Flynn left the team, and then Mr. Powers sold the team.

Might be a small coincidence, but it could be a sign of even more changes on the horizon. O'Reilly has pulled its Series sponsorship of the NHRA Jr. Dragster League. Regional races are still planned, as well as divisonal and national championships, but without the series sponsor, I wonder how that will affect the event marketing and awards that are presented to the supposed "future generation on NHRA drag racing".. I can't imagine it had to have cost a fortune to handle this series, and considering the market placement on every car (similar to the rules about decal placement for Powerade), and the building of a future generation of customers, I wonder what was the corporate mindset to pull out of what is a sucessful and well attended series?

I was told today that Carolina Tractor in Charlotte laid off 60 people last week. Still don't see the value of the nascar deal. But I will drop it.

Interesting post on Competition Plus. Kalitta will have only Doug definitely, and maybe not even for the whole schedule. Grubby needs a major "hail Mary" and Hillary...

DAVID POWERS MOTORSPORTS MUTUALLY PARTS WAYS WITH CATERPILLAR,
WILL NOT COMPETE IN 2009

HOUSTON (Jan. 7, 2009) –
Due to unfortunate economic conditions, David Powers Motorsports and Caterpillar Inc. have reached a mutual agreement to end Caterpillar’s sponsorship of David Powers Motorsports and the Caterpillar Top Fuel team, effective immediately.

“I would first like to thank Rod Fuller and all the team members that helped make David Powers Motorsports a great part of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series the last four years,” Powers said. “Also, Caterpillar and Matco Tools and all of our great sponsors who supported us along the way. And, we have to thank Tom Compton and the great staff at NHRA. The sport of NHRA drag racing is in good hands and will continue to prosper."

David Powers Motorsports is selling its Top Fuel and show car program assets. The racing assets include two complete Brad Hadman race cars, 12 sets of cylinder heads, seven short blocks, a 2008 Caterpillar-powered Kenthworth tractor, and Competition Trailers transporter. It is the ideal package for a race-winning Top Fuel program. The show car comes with two one-piece carbon fiber bodies and fifth-wheel Goldrush trailer. All inquired can be directed to Powers at (713) 539-3894 or [email protected].

“During these difficult times, I need to focus on homebuilding,” Powers said. “During my 26 years in the homebuilding industry, these are the most challenging times I’ve been through. We will keep pressing forward and persevere.”

Hot Rod Fuller and the Caterpillar Top Fuel team finished sixth in the 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series standings posting one victory in four final round appearances, including runner-up finishes at the final two races at Las Vegas and Pomona, Calif. Fuller also earned one pole in 2008 (Norwalk, Ohio). In four seasons, Powers and Fuller won seven races in 18 final rounds, claimed seven No. 1 qualifying awards, and won the $100,000 Technicoat Shootout at Las Vegas in 2007. They finished in the POWERade Top 10 all four seasons.

“Despite today's announcement, Caterpillar remains proud of the success this sponsorship in 2008,” Caterpillar NACD parts & service marketing Todd Goins said. “We enjoyed our relationship with the entire race team and were proud to be represented by such a great driver and person, Hot Rod Fuller."

Martin,
O'Reilly pulling out of the Jr. Dragster league should not hurt them too bad in the near term. This happened before when Casrtrol used to be the Jr sponsor, then they pulled out for some time before O' Reilly stepped in. The National events(Western Conference Finals and Eastern Conference Finals) are largely funded by the tracks that hold the events. I agree that for the health of the series they do need to find another sponsor.
