May I reiterate?
"Not only is it nonsensical, but it gets really tiresome."
Just no reason to say it, especially since it has no literal meaning, and therefore, no real purpose...
I rest my case.

I've got one of those shirts (Paton Racing).
They also have another one that I love - "I didn't want to tell my Mom that I'd been Drag Racing for 20 years. So I told her I was in prison!"

here are some "slang" word and phrase, I particularly appreciate:
(i think i've not read them)
nitro : Liquid Dynamite
crew chief call: set it on grenade!
little phrase: it's set on "Ludicrous speed" (joe Amato 282.13 mph barrier buster
1987 US National,.....WAS THERE!
(from Mel Brooks movies:SPACEBALLS same year.)

This goes back to the old push start days, but if you were ever at a track like, say, Indy, and were back with the fuelers, after the drivers were strapped in and everyone was ready to go an eerie silence would descend over the area. You could here a pin drop, while off in the distance you could see the back of the stands and here the national anthem being played. And then would come that one word, shouted command: "GO!" And the trucks would start rolling. Still gives me chills thinking about it.
Someone finally said "Fire the next pair." That was always good, as was "Light 'em!"
"Pants" for front wheel farings (Sigh!) We had 'em and were they ever cool!
When Bernie Partridge was announcing he'd drive me crazy by regularly saying, "Here's a pair to draw to." He also often used "We're down to the short strokes now," probably without realizing what that meant.
Garlits on female drivers, "Ya know, they don't call it a c--tpit!"
(that'll probably be pulled!)
Someone earlier mentioned "pit puppies." The one I heard a lot was "pit lizards."
Yeah, I know. Horribly chauvinistic. Please forgive me, ladies.
Then there's "He used him like a dirty shirt."
"Eagle s--t," the rubber particles that float down out of the sky after a burnout on Goodyear Eagle slicks.
Gotta be more, but I've gone blank.
