What kind of job do you have? (1 Viewer)

I was curious as to what kind of work everyone does on the Mater.

I am a Collection Manager at a law firm in Downtown Fort Worth, Texas. This job entails collecting delinquent property taxes!!! Don't assume the worst when you read that! I help people!!! Now, when I can't help them anymore, then I auction the properties off on the courthouse steps the first Tuesday of each month.

I really enjoy my job. I have met so many wonderful people and have helped so many find ways to remedy their problem. I am the nicest tax collector you will ever meet!

Of course, as most of you know, I am a singer as well!

Tell me about what you do.

Thankee!

I'm a land broker. I sell land of all varieties such as city lots, custom home lots, commercial, industrial, acreage, development land, farms, ranches, and all types of investment land. If it has curtains, we don't mess with it. I work with two of my sons Buzzz and Paul.
I absolutely love everything about what I do. I help some families realize their dreams of finding the perfect property for them to build their home on as well as help others make money with their money at a rate that far eclipses the best money markets in the world. How could you not love doing that?
Here's our web site:
"Dr.Dirt" - Arizona land sales

I am the Purchasing Manager/Analyst for the Southwest Region (about 16 locations) for a Reprographic/Printing company. I've been here 13 years and this is my 6th different opportunity with them.....been about 1 1/2 yrs in the position, but still doing about 20% of my last job. That was billing Facilities Management customers. :)

I plan to go back to college and major in PR/Marketing. :D

I am the E Business Manager for Allmand Bros. Inc., a manufacturer here in central Nebraska that manufactures Portable Light Towers, Arrowboards like you see on traffic projects, Compact tractor loader backhoes (Suzie says we manufacture Tonka Toys), and large 1 million BTU portable jobsite heaters. I work within the Marketing Dept., so Kelly, send me a pm when you get a chance--I also do all the design work on our publicity brochures and folders, etc and am always open to checking out new publishing options (especially with a fellow mater). Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. If anyone wants to check out our products, you can visit us on the web at Allmand Home

Great website Dr. Dirt! I love the picture of you & they boys!!! I highly recommend that everyone check it out. You may know someone who is looking for land in Arizona and now you will have the perfect hook up for them!

Go Kelly! Will you be going to LSU??? Geaux Tigers!:D

Don't be shy about posting what you do for a living. It may be a great networking opportunity for all of us!

I am the Purchasing Manager/Analyst for the Southwest Region (about 16 locations) for a Reprographic/Printing company.

We have a lot in common Kelly. I'm a the purchasing agent for a large school district (26 buildings). I strictly handle the maintenance end of it. I don't have anything to do with books, furniture etc... I handle a lot of the district wide contracts regarding chemicals, HVAC belts and air filters, light bulbs, etc... I also supply the buildings with basic materials for repairs that don't require one of our licensed maintenance people to perform. I assist the licensed trades guys in expediting odd and hard to find parts, motors, etc... I like to think myself as an aquisition specialist!:D

Now there's a damn good idea for a thread Suzie...

Well as a few will know I now run Motorsport Marketing Solutions where I handle most of consultancy work and along with Dan Bennett provide all our creative/design services. So I spend my time between preparing proposals, talking to prospective and current sponsors and our clients, helping them activate their chosen marketing strategies, and sitting here with a graphics tablet in my lap drawing race cars, designing paintschemes and other associated graphics.

What most don't know is that in a previous life I was a touring musician. Playing piano from the age of 8, I started doing odd pro gigs at the age of 13 and by 17/18 made it my living. I managed to fit in 4 years of university while still making a living from gigs and graduated with a BA(Hons) in Popular Music back in '97. I was lucky enough to come out of university straight into a couple of summer seasons working the UK holiday circuit, (not a great gig, but it was ok money straight out of college) and fitted in odd things like pit work for the great british tradition of pantomime over winter. Over most of this period I'd done my best to keep indulging in my passion of big band jazz, playing with local bands whenever possible although with 17 musicians on stage for a local gig the money was never going to be worth having as a pro-player. In 99 I was lucky enough to suddenly found myself working with The Sid Lawrence Orchestra, who have regularly been billed as "the worlds best big band" and constantly touring Europe. The great count Basie once said "this band is so good it should be banned". We didn't stop for a break and I didn't have more than 3 days off in three years.

However much I loved it touring constantly took its toll and I could see some of the old guys in the band were no better off than I was and they were still at it in their 70's. I decided to give it a bit of a rest and took a job in education, teaching Music Technology and providing tech support for the Music dept. at a fairly local college to home while still doing a few gigs to bring in an extra few £.

Now don't get me wrong here I loved working in education and the kids were great, but OTHER TEACHERS... well they couldn't cope with a guy who actually knew his subject and had an industry background. So I gave it a few years and did more odd gigs here and there playing with whatever band would have me that week, but finally decided that enough was enough last year as music was just becoming a drudge and a bore, and I wasn't willing to feel like that about something I truly used to love. All this time I'd been doing marketing work over here for Barry Sheavills and sponsorship renderings and bits and pieces for a few other teams, so it seemed fairly obvious that if I needed a new direction, then that should probably be it.

So here we are... MMS is up and running... its still up and down as any new business would be, but we're getting there, and I get to continue with only doing things that I truly love as a job.

I guess you could say I am a manager for my parents automotive repair business, which they've owned for over 30 years. I pay the bills, bill the customers, scheduling, do the hiring, firing, service writing work, order and buy stock, equipment etc. Occasionally I get my hands dirty in the shop when the guys are short handed or have too much scheduled. I can do the oil changes, tire repairs, minor replacements etc. Oh, and my brother also works with us and he brings his two kids to work, so I'm a baby-sitter too!

I work at our other business (Jaramillo Motorsports) doing much of the same thing, except they call me a crew chief and I'm more involved with the tuning and set up of the race cars (usually 4 or 5 of them depending on what we get subletted) and less involved with the $$. I travel to most of the races but have to miss some of them because of school.

I'm an usher at church but that's not really a job, that's enjoyment. I get to help people at church and I get a cool little cross that says "Usher" on it :)

I have my own house-sitting racket as I like to call it, and pet sit, house sit, etc for the neighbors.

Oh, and I go to school too. Working on my finance concentration to add on to my Human Resources concentration as part of my bachelor's degree.

I work for the 2nd largest pharmaceutical company in the world in the clinical trials area as a CSA - Clinical Studies Associate. Working with docs, study coordinators and sites I make sure that my CRAs (Clinical Research Associates) have what they need to monitor a site participating in a clinical trial. Working within the MIGU (musculoskeletal, inflammation, gastrointestinal, urological) group, yes an acronym crazy company, I work on clinical trials for female/male osteoporosis, male prostate, male ED, OAB - overactive bladder.

I'm also working on a pediatric study whose young patients don't have any other course of treatment and this is showing promise to many of them who otherwise would not have a good quality of life.

I know drug companies have taken the rap about charging so much for their drugs but when you see the involvement it takes to bring a drug to market, as a business, it must recoup some of this to discover new ones.

Satisfaction comes when we receive a letter from a patient thanking us for all our hard work and letting us know that their life has been made better by our efforts.

For my day job I am a computer technician for the County of Orange.

My night job is a pyrotechnician at Disneyland. (For those of you in Rio Linda, a pyrotechnician is a fireworks guy).

The 2 jobs balance each other out. Not much excitement, danger or noise in the day job but plenty of it in the night job.

right now i am in my last semester at Western Illinois University....i graduate in May, and i'll be on an internship in the spring...i'm majoring in Hospitality Management

so basically i am full-time student, and part time beer drinker....or is it the other way around :D

and P.S.....if any of you NHRA guys on tour are looking for a fresh faced youngster to run your hospitality area, i know a guy who is unattached and willing to travel :)

I am the store manager for Tire Pros in Tracy, CA. We sell auto and light truck tires (no commercial) and do full auto service and repair, including engines and transmissions. I manage the store, but operate as the service manager as well. Run the store operations, run the shop, report to the owners.

Looks like Purshasing is the popular job around here.

I too am a purchasing manager. We merged a second company into ours last year so I do the purchasing for both of them now. I also run the inventory area and oversee the shipping department. We build driving, weapon and live fire training simulators for everything from Military and Police to City Busses and drunk driving sims and a host of other applications in between.

Its a good place to work, although I'd rather be out on the tour drag racing.

It's not a job but something I do on a volunteer basis is that I serve as the Assistant area director for my county's Special Olympics program. I coach a few sports, drive the bus and help with whatever else is needed. Including putting on some crazy outfit and jumping into a frozen lake every winter.

Ideally (if the drag racing gig doesn't come around;)) I'd like to go back to school to be a physical therapist. But the whole time, money and trying to start over with 3 kids at home(along with whatever the excuse of the day is) has kept that from happening.

Oh and I suppose I am also a full time complainer of the countdown. Not really a job but a quest lol

Well, I never post on here, but I read every day and I figure this would be a good opportunity to start.

I live in Indianapolis and I work in Human Resources for a major health care network. It's not what I would call a "fun" job, but it pays the bills. I graduated from Ball State in 2005 with a Bachelors in Business Administration. My concentration was HR, and my minor was Organizational Communication. Living so close to the heart of NHRA drag racing, I would love to find a position with one of the teams located around here, but I'm not sure that I have the proper qualifications.

I really appreciate everyones responses to this thread. It has really helped me learn about all of you. Thank you so much for sharing your lives with us. It is truly a pleasure to get to know all of you! :D

keep the responses coming!

Welcome abord Allen! This looks like it might be a good place to start making connections!

I am a train conductor. Yep the guy who says "Tickets Please." I work the commuter trains in and out of Boston. I was originally with Amtrak, but they did not re-bid the Boston commuter contract a few years ago and a new company, Mass Bay Commuter RR took it over. I have been at it for 13 years. I had another railroad job while in college during the summers mostly doing basically the same thing but for a tourist railroad on Cape Cod.

I am a full time business and accounting student. I am also a teacher at a daycare center. Its a rewarding job, but it can actually be quite stressful at times.
