Pomona next year

Just heard that NASCAR is moving the daytona 500 back a week next year. I doubt NHRA will have the winter nationals the same weekend. Will they move it?

I would move it a week or 2 before the 500. The only roadblock will be what the NFL does with their season. Lots of unknowns at this time to really say what happens.

Not a popular opinion, I'm sure, but I'd like to see the whole start of the season back up several weeks. It seems that Pomona, and Gainesville, start too early, and are weeks apart. The NHRA season seems to begin in fits and starts, Pomona... weeks... Gainesville... weeks... then the season starts it's regular rhythm of a race every week or two and proceeds that way all the way though November.

I'd like them to start in the second half of March, and be closer together. So when the season does start, it starts in earnest and can build momentum.

That's the way it should be!

I agree....

It all depends on whether the NFL expands to an 18 game season!

ACTUALLY,

I'd say it depends on if the NFL is even playing...... Their collective bargaining talks don't seem to be going well enough to be able to even HAVE a season next year.......

This year is not so bad, Gainsville is only 2 weeks later, then just a 3 week span until it really heats up.

Still works out to one race in Feb., one in Mar. then two/three races a month through the rest of the season. Seems weird.

Bob, I was talking with a Drag racing columnist who told me about this scenario when NASCAR moved their Phoenix race to Feb! It all hinges on that possibility of an 18 game NFL season.

Christopher,

You've hit the nail on the head. We should learn from the decision NASCAR made. They moved their start back one week to ELIMINATE an off weekend. The reason...they want to take the momentum from their season opening race and build on it. An off weekend takes the momentum (viewers, ticket sales, souveneir sales, etc.) away.

I've always been dissappointed in NHRA's season opening schedule. Too many off weekends at the start of the season to create any lasting hype and excitement. When you take a weekend off, you're not open for business. As a business owner we would never operate a business that had an inconsistent schedule of when we were open. I'd suggest creating a schedule that had very few open weekends. If that means starting later, so be it. I'd much rather have that than what we've always had.

Personally, I don't care what NASCAR does, nor when they race.

we have 8 1/2 months to fit in 22 or 23 races... but hype the hell out of 'Drag Racing is better than driving around in circles for 4 hours because...'

and qualify on Fridays, Race Saturdays... Leave Sunday for Rain Day... or 4 qualifying shots Saturday, Race Sunday...

And, A booked in 'Match Race' on an off weekend isn't testing... testing is making passes on the track the race was just held on, or will be held on the following weekend....

i agree, would be nice to not have 3 weeks between gainesville and vegas I;
but i think every year there's an odd 3 week lapse somewhere in season,
think it's been between last race of w. swing and brainerd other years.

i think labor day plays a part in nhra's schedule - think nhra schedule always
gives 2 weeks before the nats. and 2 weeks after which is no different
this year, but other years i can remember the w. swing not being the only
3 races in 3 consecutive weeks before the nats.; this year the first 3 races
of countdown are back to back to back in 3 weeks
(after the nats. because labor day is late)
