Mater Dying????

The only thing wrong with the Mater for some people is it's civil (most of the time). For some people if there is not enough anger/arguing then it's dead or lame. That's why people liked it when they had the anonymity of hiding behind screen names, they could say anything and never be held accountable.

For the most part the Mater is a group of friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic people. If it's slowed down any it's because the people that have the depth of a puddle of water have left for greener pastures.

Jim,

I couldn't agree more. When I was first introduced to this board it was full of accusation and finger pointing. It wasn't interesting to me at all. There were posts of run-on sentences with no punctuation. Paragraphs that never ended and accusations that were senseless...at best. Now that we all have to be accountable, it makes for a wonderful source of knowledgeable conversation and entertainment. We're blessed with posts from professional owners, racers and sponsors. Just last week Don Schumacher, Jim Yates and Fred Simmons posted on this site. That's VERY impressive. I'm guessing they're here because it's civil and professional. I know that's why I'm here.

Let's keep it clean, respectful and appropriate.

John

It would be a pleasure. But you don't have to buy 'em...

Drop me an e-mail at cole dot coonce at gmail dot com and include your home address.... I will happily stuff a handful into an envelope for you....

Anybody else? (I found hundreds of the sticky buggers.)

cheers,

Yep, me. Email OTW!.

Thanks, Virgil; I saw your cars run many times (I lived in California from 1980 to 2004) and you CERTAINLY qualify as someone who could answer anything ~I~ could think of to ask. I really appreciate the time you took to write that, and I understand most of it.

There were a couple of things that didn't get through my thick head, though, and I wondered if you could clear them up?

To wit: Your comment, "The idea in nitro racing has always been to get the clutch locked up early and get the motor to rev to as many rpms as possible as soon as possible."

I am not being argmentative here, but those two situations would seem, at first blush, to be at odds with each other.

That is, if the clutch locks up early, it's going to pulll the motor down to a low-rev situation unless the wheels spin, a definite no-no. No "rev to as many rpms as possible as soon as possible."

On the other hand, if you are successful in getting the other parameter you described "get the motor to rev to as many rpms as possible as soon as possible.", if the clutch is locked up, that's not gonna happen unless the wheels spin.

Maybe by "as soon as possible", you meant with no wheelspin.

I have seen Jerry Ruth leave the line from an idle and turn some VERY good e.t.'s, but he was loading the cylinders (cylinder pressure) very heavily, early-on, and Fuel motors seem to like that, don't they?

At any rate, this sort of discussion is what I thrive on, being the terminal gearhead that I am, and I really appreciate that you understand that, and respond in kind.

I'm sorry you're not racing; I always admired your efforts, but I fully understand why someone would choose not to be a part of today's scene.

Bill
PS If RPM's are killing these motors, why do they have a 3.2 final drive ratio rule? Why not a 3.00:1 or even a 2.80:1???

Seems to me VH was bringing you back to the topic of this thread

Yes. And with that in mind, if NitroMater has taken a hit in participation and spectating, my guess is that is due to the proliferation of newly-popular social networking sites like FaceBook and Twitter -- and the subsequent flocking of nitro-addled cybernauts to those places...

Just a guess....

Nitronic Research's "Header Flames" certainly had its moments.

Funny, I was digging around my garage the other day, looking for pictures to scan, and I found a whole of box of immaculate Nitronic Research stickers.

Cole, I still proudly display those on my truck, even have a few more if I buy another.

I'm glad VH has his Nostalgia FC's for entertainment !
The Nostalgia thing is not nearly as expensive but competition and comaradarie are in great supply.
Like Drag Racing boards , it's all good to me.
I'm not here as much anymore cause what time I have for the computer I usually trying to find answers to problems or looking for parts.

The 'mater' is like a cockroach and Keith Richards...it can NOT be killed. The 'MATER' is the Phoenix of 92' of drag racing message boards :)

I find the complaint about not enough differing opinions and too much agreement odd.

Start a countdown thread and while most are against there is a very vocal pro side. Watch Paul and I go at it you'll see some differning opinions. Although people may be disappointed that we usually stay above name calling and mean spirited. I can tell him how wrong he is, I don't need to call him an A hole in the process. But some people here seem to think that would be good????

Start a DSR thread. Watch the varying thoughts there. Not sure why but the dark side brings out a ton of thoughts.

Anything Anderson and the list goes on.

Not sure why people want vicisiousness. Healthy debate is great even heated is fine but I don't know what some people want here

Lay off Keith....... He's cool!

Bill - I over simplified because it would take a book to completely answer your questions. Quickly, the tires are always spinning just a little bit, that is why black tracks are left on the race surface. Rev limiters kill motors, not rpms. All nitro cars leave at idle, at the hit of the throttle they reach approx 8000 rpm in .2 second, do not get pulled down below 6700 rpm during a run. Clutch gets locked up around 300 feet and the car is always accelerating hard, hopefully.

Eric - I was only answering the question you asked, "when was I returning to the NFC". And I was trying to return this thread back to the original topic.

Randy - I didn't know any of that.

Zappa - Why?

Even with all the alternatives, the Mater isn't dying.

I new it, it was you I saw getting off the bus the last time I saw him play.

***Warning this thread is now being double derailed***

Haaahaha! I probably wasn't me! It was the other Suzie!!! A friend of mine Buddy Whittington (guitar god!) just sent me a picture of my husband and his band Texas from 1973 when they opened up for Frank Zappa at the Texas Hall in Arlington, Texas! It is pretty funny, there are manequin parts all over the stage. Frank was a little funny that way! I will email it to ya!

Virgil- Zappa was COOOOOOL!!!!!!! :D

Sorry for the derail! I can't help myself sometimes!:D

Thanks, Virgil, for the explanation.

You didn't touch on the 3.2:1 final drive ratio question, though, and that was one I was hoping you'd comment on. Is that a complicated issue?

Wouldn't seem so...
Thanks for any information.

Bill
PS If rev limiters kill motors to that extent, why don't the crew chiefs just tell NHRA, "We're not running them." If they did that, NHRA would have to recourse... it's not like they have 64 cars lined up, ready to take the places of the cars that NHRA disallows...

NHRA '09 Rulebook, section 16:2, page 236, Rear End: "Rear-end gear ratio restricted to 3.20:1 only; may be no lower or higher."

Bill - You need to start a thread on this subject and get the views of many.

The rev limiter was a pet project of Ray Alley when he worked for NHRA and whoever was above him tellling him to do it. It was voted down a couple of times by 100% of the pro nitro racers, but they proceeded any way and it was implimented soon after.

When nitro cars used the 9" Ford style rear, gears were constantly being manufactured at lower ratios, some as low as 2.70. Speeds needed to be addressed and the 3.20 was adopted. When everyone went to the 12" rear now in use, only the 3.20 gear is manufactured.

I guess I was/am a little too conservative for a Zappa experience.

type in 'zappa crossfire' on youtube and be entertained.
frank cooly and calmly explaining his opinions around time period in 80's
when rock lyrics became a washington d.c. topic.
.........great stuff.

I have a vision in my head of a very cool looking funny car, probably with a little pink on it with a Texas flag and the name "The Derailer" on the side. Of course it's tuned by the "O" brothers and driven by Suzie "The Derailer" Oberhofer.
