Hmmmm..........the anchors never cover the NHRA 'cept when they are in town........yeah, good enough for me, I'm totally convinced now, John "dove"

I didn't say I thought he did. I, like everyone except a very few people inside JFR, will never know definitively. I just pointed out that the perception is out there.

I have been thinking about this thread today and I've come up with a "what if". What if it had been the other way around? Just suppose Ashley would have had a bad light and gone up in smoke and Johnny won the event? How many think that people wouldn't have been on here calling Johnny an S.O.B. for making his little girl take a dive so he could win his 1000th round and the event? Folks would be calling him greedy saying things like "he has enough wins, couldn't he just let her win one?". Do you think this is why Ashley and Johnny both looked a little uneasy after the semi finals? I believe I heard her say something like "great, I have to run you in the final". It's funny how some people want to throw Johnny under a bus when just a few months ago we were all just concerned about his mere survival.

Thats funny I came on this morning to post something similar to this

Oh, by the way, I wish to thank the IRL announcers for bringing thousands of additional viewers with their crossover remarks. It sure kept me glued to the broadcast even though I kinda-sorta understood what they were alluding to. Seeing it was no less exciting for all of us!
Congrats, JFR and especially Ashley, Guido and crew! You've outscored Austin, Bernie and John's operation all year so far. Why not one more race????

They could have cross promoted it better than giving away the ending. I go into full fledged sequester mode on Sunday afternoon so I can watch the race not knowing what happens. When CBS runs a promo for CSI they show the exciting parts of the episode but they don't give away the ending. To me this was like telling someone how the movie ended as they were walking into the theather.

That's the post of the year right there.

OK........I misunderstood.

I just do not think we here or on any other message board should be tainting her victory, especially if it is totally unfounded and very unlikely.

People here moan and whine about bad or no press, then pour gas on the fire when there is a really positive thing in our sport.

So therefore it can be said that many Drag Racing fans believe that there was dirty pool going on, the tank job. Which then in turn sways opinion from Joe and Jane six pack and competing race series.

I dunno.........

Complaining about public perception, then shooting ourselves in both feet when something good happens.

I do not think that is the way everyone pulls in the same direction for the betterment of our great sport.

The IRL announcer that made the crossover remark was the one and only Marty Reed, kinda sounded to me like he misses announcing the NHRA races when he said it.

Excellent post Dave!
Your "what if" still wouldn't help out those who hate the Boss and all things Force. They will take every shot they have to further their cause despite the collateral damage. It appears as if any JFR good news outside of life and death is fair game to be diluted.

I didn't see the IRL race, but what time was it when Marty said this? I thought that the IRL was racing middle of the day, Ashley and John didn't race until almost 8 PM. How could anyone have known what was going to happen? I think that Marty was just letting everyone know that Ashley is the hottest driver in the class right now, and today could be the day.

The problem is did it get positive press?

ESPN gave the impression that it was dive. I've heard from a couple of non drag racing fans and they asked me "so did you see that dive"

Personally I don't know if it was or not. I can list evidence, albeit circumstantial, that would easily support either side. I suppose in the end only John knows.

The idea that we banter it around really doesn't hurt but its the perception from those potential fans and sponsors that I think is concerning. To a point when you run an organization like this, the nfl, mlb whatever. Reality isn't always the most important thing. Perception is reality. Is this has been perceived by outsiders as less then honest then that is what people remember.

I couldn't tell you anything about Formula one racing except that they had a tire issue at a race when everyone parked and that they had a race where one teammate pulled over so another could win. Now that is my impression of F1, I wonder what non fans impression is of NHRA after this win.

Ideally she wins this weekend and doesn't race a teammate to do so. I think that would help to end the speculation.

I just saw the run over and all he said then was something along the lines that it would be well worth the time spent to watch the drag race.

We were betting in our house weather that meant John won, Ashley won or even Herbert or Hillary. Nothing he said then gave too much away

Well, as another 'Mater here has already stated, Ash did not seem very happy to race pop's in the final.

I think everyone in the JFR camps just plain flat knew they were damned either way.

I also think that is why John specifically asked if they might smoke the tires.

John is not miked up at every race, so who knows if he asks that question often?

the problem here is perception, yes, but what were they supposed to do, Not tow to the starting line?

I'll bet more people think it was a "good" win or than do not.

Anyway, she won, has the point lead, and consistency.

And Ash could just have easily smoked 'em too.

Damned either way.

I didnt hear it but my brother said he said "And if your a Ashley Force fan be sure to stay tuned for the NHRA nationals next>" or something like that.

He said it somewhere between 7:15 and 7:20, he said something about Ashley Force and then I blocked my ears and when I unblocked them he said something along the lines of "that's all we can tell you" he may have been referring to the fact that Ashley was in the final or that it was an all Castrol final.

I think you're right. With the rain delay NHRA was running much closer than normal to "live", weren't they? They were off by only an hour or so, right?

Also, I think Marty is probably still a drag racing fan, and was just sharing his excitement.

actually I had pointed out on one of these threads that a few races ago when they had the chance of this happening, she won her semi final race and he lost his. She said then that alothough she wanted him to win it was a relief in that she didn't want her first win to come against him because if anything happened people would question it.

I'm sure somebody has that race on tv and could link the video or at least post the exact quote.

I guess she foretold the future on that one

Actually, truth be told, if John won, it............."would have been to complete his comeback", "get his 1000th win in 500 races", or "move up in points."

And still people would have cried "dive, dive, dive".

I for one believe it to be legit.

And I am not fooled easily.
