There are 4 selectors to the Hall of Fame. The museum has a website that tells who they are. They must vote. There about 380 nominees that they pick from. By the way that 6.09 at Indy had an interesting side note. For qualifying he did not run on Thursday or Friday or Saturday but waited until the last session on Sunday. It became almost a joke. The track announcer said over the P.A. "wonder if Bucher will run today" When he was asked why he did not run. He said he knew it was right and he knew what it would do.
He ran on the last session on Sunday. He qualified # 1. It was a 32 car field back then. The rumor was when Garlits heard the time he threw his tools in the air. Don told me he never threw his tools but he said something like,"what the heck is going on, A Chevrolet should not be able to run like that!"

Was that Indy 74 (or was it 73??)??? I remember going to a couple of the 32 car field Indys- good times....

That was '73. I was fortunate enough to have been there. It was the year after Beck won his first national event there, when everyone else (well, it seemed like it) was at the PRO race that Garlits put together to challenge NHRA. Beck had been running well since the '72 race, but had not been able to put together another win when all the big names were present. Bucher ran another .09 in the first round, but lost to Randy Allison's 6.06. Beck went on to beat Carl Olsen in the final, who was driving the Kuhl and Olsen "Da' Fast Guys" car sponsored by Revell. He also beat Garlits along the way. Olsen said after the race that he was "Counting the money" when he crossed the first MPH stripe when Beck drove past him to take the win. To this day, that year at Indy is my favorite race. Top Fuel has never been better.

I remember that like it was yesterday. Probably the coolest thing I have ever witnessed at a drag race.

Back then It was not like today where # 1 raced # 32. Instead # 1 raced # 16 and #2 raced # 17 .........#16 raced # 32. So Randay Allison was a strong car, My Dad said being he was #1 that Randy had nothing to lose so he gave it all. My Dad was always thinking of saving parts so he held a little back. He never expected Randy to run so well.

I always thought it was 1v9, 2v10, ect in a sixteen car field... ie, quickest bottom half car raced quickest top half... and odd number cars on one side of the ladder and even number cars on the other
2nd rd was 1v5, 3v7, 2v6, and 4v8... semis 1v3 and 2v4...

Karl you are correct. RE a 32 car field #1 would have run #17 in round 1, #16 would face #32.
I have a different recollection of the 73 Indy TF (I was not there). I thought Bucher qualified #1 with a 6.13, ran the 6.09 in rd 1 and lost to a 6.06(?). I remember he was the first BBC to top 240 (73 Supernationals) later that year.

It was a 6.09 at Indy for # 1.
What you might remembering was he qualified with a 6.17 at Gatornationals that year then 6.13 first round then 6.07 to set the Top Fuel record. He broke on the burnout in the final. He always the finals would have been in the fives if it had not broke.
