Tony Shoe in the IRL? (1 Viewer)

I'll believe that one when I see it.

I heard somewhere Capps got the same offer from someone.

I got a couple friends that work on a big time Champ Car, I'll see what I can dig up.

TShoe sat across the table from me at the Speedway Club in Charlotte in 1999 and said he was going to test drive a Busch car. True story :D

While it's hard for us to imagine there HAS to be a big draw for a driver simply because the fame and money is WAY bigger over there.

However, I am not sure how often the driving skills can transfer over to an entirely different type of racing.

Anyone know if Tony has any experience in go karts or sprints or anything like that the way Scelzi and Capps do?

Tony was giving rides in a Richard Petty Driving Experience car earlier this year. I don't remember the track. A lot of different drivers get offered chances to drive other types of cars. I don’t think anything will come of it.

There are dozens of proven, over-qualified open wheel drivers looking rides in both the IRL and Champ Car with not nearly enough racecars or competitive teams available.

EXACTLY. Champ Car and the IRL are sinking ships, one could argue they've already sunk and are fighting at the bottom. This is simply a team in the IRL or the series itself doing ANYTHING it can to create some type of publicity or get an established star from another series, like Tony Schumacher, to come on over and bring some fans, and probably more importantly, some of Shoe's money and knack for attracting sponsorships. In the IRL, if you are not in a Penske, Ganassi or Andretti car, you may as well be pedaling a schwinn as you have no shot at running up front. If the offer is not from one of those 3 teams, and I am relatively sure it isn't as all of their drivers and sponsors have been announced for '07, Tony Schumacher would be retarded to give this more than one nanosecond of consideration.

I can tell you guys another thing, most IRL and Champ Car teams are based in Indianapolis and now that most of the big fuel teams have opened shops in Brownsburg, that is not sitting well with the open wheel guys. There are only so many behind-the-scenes people to go around, people like office managers, PR people, sponsorship liasons, logistics people etc. and now there is a competitive market place in Indy for these folks. There has been some talent lost from the open wheel side to the NHRA side in other ancillary areas, like fabricators and Carbon specialists as well. The fuel teams presence is known, let's put it that way, and it is just another kick in the face to the open wheel guys that they are no longer the top of the heap.

Chris, I think that analogy works for any Major Motorsports series including NHRA.

I disagree. I think JR Todd proved otherwise this year. I think Tim Wilkerson winning the US Nationals a few years ago proved otherwise. I think Frankie Pedregon at the end of last season proved otherwise. Pro Stock is a complete crapshoot at every event for the most part as it doesn't really matter how good your car is to a certain degree if you don't let the clutch out first. In the NHRA there will always be an oppurtunity for someone to step up and "steal" one.

NO ONE besides Penske, Ganassi or Andretti are going to win in the IRL. Rahal-Letterman can't even field a competitive team in the IRL anymore. It's no coincidence that Bobby Rahal sent his kid to Champ Car to race even though he owns an IRL team. In the IRL, it would take both Penskes, both Ganassis and all 4 Andrettis to crash or break before anyone else could "steal" one. Not bloody likely.

Gosh I sure wish he'd go kick some butt over there!!!!
And I would be his NUMBER 1 fan if he did!!!

LOL

It doesn't matter who is in that car as long as Alan Johnson is calling the tuning shots. Tony leaving wouldn't open the door any wider for the Kalitta guys, that US Army car is still going to haul the mail.

Anyone remember John Andretti driving a TF car? I bet Andretti did a better job driving a dragster that TS will do in an Indy car. No offense to anyone but I think driving a TF car has to be alot easier than a champ car.

John Andretti drove Jack Clarks TF car & it was sponsored by Taco Bell in 1993 & if I am not mistaken he made it to the semis in Atlanta.

That would have been the car I was referring to. I remember that Andretti didn't have anything line up for open wheel racing so he took Clark up on the offer to driver. I think that he did a pretty good job.

BTW, John Andretti lost the NASCAR Busch Series Rookie of the Year honors by 1 point over Roush Racing's Danny O'Quinn.

Sidebar: Funny how a guy with 2 Cup wins and multiple full seasons in Cup can run for ROTY in Busch?

Almost as funny as Kurt Busch ... he is a former Cup Champion that would have been eligible for the ROTY in the Busch series.
