:D Maybe he was trying to dress like the drag racing gorilla from Bikini Beach.
 
Les wore that hair/helmet for years while racing at OCIR. Rumor has it that he wore it in the jet car just once. Something about burning hair(LOL):D
 
Keep in mind that in the 70's that car was state of the art and the helmet rules were a lot different than today.

He raced like that, and in those days, no one gave it a second thought. Second look, maybe...

There was a certain Econo Dragster racin' Mater, that had a revolutionary duct tape battery mount during this same era. I'm sure it saved weight.:)

After Irwindale closed, I can remember crossing over to OCIR and seeing/racing against Les, Goodwin, English and a few other Maters.
