Military Sponsorships on Chopping Block?

Makes you wonder how some of the low ranking families trying to get by on poor pay and food stamps feel about seeing the Army sponsor a top fuel car.
They probably think "I need to talk to my congressman because they're the ones who actually determine military pay, not my particular service. What the Army does with the money they're appropriated by that same congress is for the Army to decide. If putting a winner, who publicly supports the troops, out in front of the American public at large puts a positive light on all military does and encourages others to join, then good for them."

I am a major supporter of all the people in our military. I agree that some wild hair politician found out about this and decided to run with it. But, I do believe that regardless whether it's the auto racing sponsorships by the military or other outrageous things that the government supports they all need to be looked at closer than ever. We are in a changing time and what was good yesterday may or may not be good for us today. I think the first thing that should be looked at by our wonderful politicans is the benefits they receive that none of us know about and cost us a bunch of money, but, they are not going to do anything that takes benefits away from themselves - the take aways are only from their constituents, who put them into office.

Actually, one particular Congresswoman from Minnesota is now proposing to cut Veterans Disability payments.

Maybe they should cut off all the foreign aid. That might be a step in the right direction. Take care our people before we take care of someones elses. :)

I assure you, republicans will not shut off aid to the largest recipient, Israel.

This is always a hot button, but it amounts to less than 1% of the federal budget, and of that 20% goes to Israel, which as someone else noted won't get cut.

This is an interesting article: 2010 United States federal budget - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Note that 75% of the budget is in 4 areas: defense, social security, medicare/medicaid, and welfare/unemployment. You want to cut some meat, you have to go there.

Jewish people vote and they DO NOT vote republican. Think about that!

Perhaps they support giving aid to Israel for reasons other than buying votes. Such as helping our strongest middle-eastern ally in its' neverending struggle to remain a democratic nation in the face of tens of millions of religious fanatics whose entire purpose in life is to see that doesn't happen.

Memo to Greg Moon: I'll say this quietly: it ain't just the Republicans, buddy...:) democrats.senate.gov/newsroom/record.cfm?id=330747

We're gettin' way too political here. Schumacher and Newman get to keep their Army sponsorships; McCollum's political ploy failed. The system worked; the proposal was defeated in a 2 to 1 bipartisan vote. What else is there to say?

Not too much to say. I suppose we can save a few bucks if Bachmann gets her way and cuts the vets disability funds.

I don't agree at all with cutting justifiable veteran disability funds. If that's indeed what Michele Bachmann is proposing, then she's wrong. There's plenty of fat elsewhere. I would like to see better oversight, so that the vets themselves get 100 percent of the benefit instead of large portions of the funds being siphoned off for 'administrative' expenses.

We agree on something. Surprised? :)

I hate politicians.

Carl's singular statement above sums up this entire subject.

I believe it was Don Garlits who once opined, "there are no more statesmen, only politicians." Truer words have never been uttered.

I don't mind the U.S. Army spending my tax dollars advertising on the side of a Top Fuel car at an NHRA event. I DO mind that the other services are boxed out of the NHRA. Is the Army the only branch of service who needs to meet recruitment numbers in order to continue to defend this country's freedom?

I walked around the pits all day in my whites before and after I re-enlisted in Wilk's Pit Area last year and merely the sight of my uniform had young boys and girls asking to have their picture taken with me. I'm just an average joe doin' his time and I drew attention. Seeing the U.S. Army on the side of an ultra-cool race car is definitely recruiting. As I said, I'd just like to see the other services represented equally, or at least nearly so.

As for the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, Golden Knights & Leap Frogs - I'd be willing to bet, though I don't have any statstics to prove it, that more people join the military as a result of their efforts than anything NHRA is doing. Whereas the NHRA, NASCAR, etc. provides an interest to people. Actually seeing Sailors, Soldiers, etc. performing military duties, albeit all dressed up fancy, is really cool!
