Military Sponsorships on Chopping Block?

it is really sad how divided our country is politically.
democrats suggesting sports sponsors for military recruiting is wrong is about
the same as a republican suggesting funding certain programs for the arts
is wrong.
Both are most likely pandering for votes while arguing against probably less
than 1% of a particular budget.

There is no reason for the Army to sponsor the DSR dragster. NHRA and the Army put together programs to bring young folks to the drag races in hopes of having them consider enlisting in the Army. At one time that was probably needed, but not today. Talk about pulling the wool over peoples eyes.
The Army has closed over 50% of their recruiting stations, they don't need them. Want to know why - because they are turning people away as it is. They used to require that you had a GED and no felony record. Today they will not take you if you have a GED and have any kind of record. Even with a college education you are not automatically accepted.
Due to the lack of jobs available in the civilian marketplace more and more people are looking to the Services for employment and some sort of technical training they can use when they get out or use the military to pay for their college education They are lined up trying to get in and the majority do not get accepted, they arn't needed.

Saying they are using the DSR Dragster as a recruiting tool is one of the biggest BS lines I have heard. I don't mean this to take anything away from DSR or Tony as their support of the Army is A+. Agreed it isn't much money but we don't need to spend it to benefit a race team, regardless if it is NHRA, NASCAR, INDY CAR or whatever. Granted the money the Army supports DSR with is a drop in the ocean but there are better uses of the money like using the money to support one of many needs of our Wounded Warriors or Veterans.

Maybe NHRA convinced the Army to stay so they have something to put in the midway as the majority of the sponsors have left due to the greed of NHRA management.

put 'em on the damn border and enforce our laws on the books, it wuld b good training and also provide jobs instead of the give away programs

Recruiting may not be required these days but I still think there's a need for an outlet to reward and recognize current military personnel and the veterans. I think for the small amount of $$ the NHRA program costs the Army vs. what the National Guard is paying for NASCAR is well worth the $$ to treat those who have served to a day away at the races. Now, I don't know if the Army uses the sponsorship that way, but I think it would be good tool to use if they choose to. I honestly believe the days are numbered for these type of sponsorships if the sole intent is for recruiting.

In the examples you list, both the Republicans & the Democrats would be wrong because neither are listed as congressional responsibilities in the Constitution... You know, that governing document that all three branches of government have twisted, distorted and rewritten to meet their needs and wants since the late 1700's.

I will agree that both party representatives in your examples are, indeed, pandering for votes, but to say that it shouldn't matter because it's likely less than 1% of the particular budget is the kind of argument that needs to stop immediately - regardless of the context. If everybody holds on to their .05% and isn't willing to make a sacrifice, we'll never find a solution that actually starts to make a dent in the almost 18 trillion dollar deficit.

I love seeing our military services supported and recognized in all motorsports, but the fact is we're in tight financial times right now and sacrifices are necessary. We're furloughing people and cutting budgets for projects all over the place. Do you think someone who has to go home without pay one day a week for 11 weeks because the government can't afford to pay them wants to see millions spent on a race team? I doubt it. Yes, there's a benefit to the military for sponsoring race cars, but the ROI isn't there right now... especially when one considers the Blue Angels are essentially grounded due to a lack of funding. Air Shows generate as much, or more interest in military service, so if they can't fly (recruit), why should the Army, National Guard, Air Force or whoever spend money on race cars?

And to suggest that NHRA (or NASCAR, or IHRA, or whoever) can't allow active duty & retired military members in to the races for free to express their support of a member's service just because none of the branches are represented on the side of a race car is wrong - one has nothing to do with the other.

Note: As has been mentioned in the past, Tony Schumacher and the entire DSR organization are absolutely wonderful representatives and I sincerely appreciate all they've done for the U.S. Army. The Army couldn't ask for a better role model and spokesperson.

Terry, sorry but your info is incorrect. There was a post on mater that showed how much DSR saved the Army in just one year in military for recruiting. Wish I could find it again. Very interesting stuff.

Mike, as you know all the info on Mater is not correct. The same as everything you find on the internet is not correct. I was passing on info from my brother who was recently in charge of a recruiting station. It has been closed. A few years ago he told me about the goals they were given and had to meet and how they struggled to meet the assigned goals. Now he says they have been turning people away as they were meeting their goals very early in the month without even trying which is the reason many of the recruiting stations are being closed. They are closing even though in some cases they have combined the Army/Navy/Air Force/Marine recruiting stations into one.
Your info might be correct, but is way outdated.
The best comment someone made is for NHRA to allow all active and retired service personnel into the races free and publicize it. I don't know why the high priced publicity idiots in Glendora haven't figured out that this idea could be a big publicity coo for them.
The comment Gordon made is spot on.

Since this has turned into a political thread. There is no way to justify the Army spending any money on the NHRA. Sequester this, sequester that. Cut hot meals to Marines so Mr. and Mrs. Obama can afford lavish vacations, lavish fund raisers, when they do bother to return to D.C., non stop parties at the White House.

Don't forget that $50 million IRS conference in Anaheim, CA, where they aren't exactly sure what they spent because they say they "lost the receipts." I'll have to try that at my next audit.

Mike, regardless of what the 'DON' has said in the past it isn't relevant today. If 1 out of every 100 kids that go to the drag races to see the Army car were to sign up for the military the numbers would not be relevant, and I can guarantee you that they do not get 1 our of 100 to sign up. The money to DSR is a waste of our money that could be used in a better place.
I have a nephew who is a 1st LT in the 5th BCT 101st Airborne Division. He has been a Black Ops officer, which used to be the Green Berets), for three years and had made one trip to Iraq and 2 to Afghanistan and was on orders to start Ranger school three mondays ago. On the friday before he was to report his battalion commander called him in and said Ranger school had been cancelled. Not him going to Ranger school but the entire Ranger training program had been closed and those currently in Ranger school are being reassigned without finishing school. If we can't afford to train the military we certainly can't afford to waste money by sponsoring a race car?
I would willing go up against the Shoe on this one face to face. The Joint Chief's of Staff of all the military branches also agree that things like this are not justifiable. How DSR kept the Army sponsorship is baffeling. It doesn't pay for itself and never will. It just takes money away from our service people who defend our country.

What the Army spends on the NHRA is nothing compared to what the Obamas blow on lavish vacations and parties.

When the debate starts I have $20 on Shoe.

The program that the Army has with NHRA and DSR brings bus loads of high school kids to the races for free. They give them a backpack and Army literature and are talked to by Army personnel. Is this a good program to make them aware of what is available to them that they would not have known about before - yes. You are not going to get even one of those school age kids to sign up for the Army, they are too young. Will they sign up for the military later on after high school - who knows, there is no way that can be gauged. The military stopped having recruiters at colleges some time ago because it was not cost effective. Most of the rest of the people at the races don't fit into the demographic the military is looking for - you or me. I already spent my time in the Army in Vietnam.
Does the program give the Army more exposure to younger people - sure it does, the same as dropping by a car dealer and the salesman gives you all the info and literature you need about a vehicle you might be interested in. Is sponsoring a race car a good investment when we are making severe cost cutting in training our existing military - NO.

The ARMY sponsorship is not taking away money from our troops who defend our country. The corrupt obama administration that hates the military is taking the money away. The corrupt obama administration that spends our tax money on "green" companies that contribute to obama's campaign, get our money and then file for bankruptcy is taking the money. The corrupt obama administration that controls the corrupt IRS is taking the money away. The corrupt obama administration that is giving millions to Kenya is giving tax money away.

Want me to list more places where the the corrupt obama administration is wasting money?

John, how do you really feel??

I do not believe this site is the place for you or anyone else to voice their political opinion of the current or previous administrations..
It is a drag racing site. If you have a problem with the nations politics contact you representative or senator. Leave it off of here.
This is NOT a forum for political dissertations. No where in any of my replies did I blame the problems or sponsorships or lack of them on any political party.
My comments have been only discussing the Army sponsorship of the DSR T/F car and the lack of value it has to our military.

That's right, this isn't a political forum. But your statements lead right into politics. You can't talk about military funding with out having it lead to politics. Lets look at where our tax money is really going (and how it's being wasted) before slamming the Army's recruitment methods. Apparently the Army thinks it is getting a good deal with DSR or they wouldn't be doing it.

Enough said from me.

Enough said from you - GREAT!!!
I never mentioned the government, only how the military has reduced it's recruiting program because they don't need to go out and find people to join the Army. They are lined up without all the advertising. So why do they need to sponsor DSR and spend both mine and your tax money. I assume you are a tax payer so some of your taxes, a very small part, goes to DSR. Have you ever been able to get into their pit or hospitality suite because you pay for part of the sponsorship?????? I haven't.

I think this has got out of hand. There are those that don't agree on the Army sponsoring the DSR dragster and those who do agree.
Everyone has a right to their opinion and on many subjects people are going to agree and others they are not. That is our right and we all need to respect that.
We could argue this until the cows come in but no matter how we feel about it it is not going to change from what it is.
I don't want to see this get dirty and nasty and get people mad either way.
I'am out.
