Military Sponsorships on Chopping Block?

I don't agree at all with cutting justifiable veteran disability funds. If that's indeed what Michele Bachmann is proposing, then she's wrong. There's plenty of fat elsewhere. I would like to see better oversight, so that the vets themselves get 100 percent of the benefit instead of large portions of the funds being siphoned off for 'administrative' expenses.

We agree on something. Surprised? :)

Here ya go Carl.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann. Proudly Serving the 6th District of Minnesota

"One point on my discussion list was a $4.5 billion proposal that would affect payments made to our veterans. That discussion point has received a lot of attention and I have decided to remove it from consideration. The problem of government spending must be solved, but not on the backs of our nation’s war heroes. I have always been a proud supporter of the United States military and I continue to stand with our veterans. In the months ahead I look forward to working with our Veterans Service Organizations to ensure that we fulfill our commitments to those who sacrificed so much in their brave service for our country.”

She made a mistake and took corrective action after listening to the wishes of her constituents and the will of the people in general. I don't condone her proposal, but I do condone how she dealt with the overwhelming negative response. Isn't this the way Washington is supposed to work?

I was rooting for Ryan Newman's Army car today but unfortunately it received an honorable discharge about lap 175. I was happy to see that kid win, though. What a thrill that had to be. A bit like Del Worsham winning the Southern Nationals 20-odd years ago.

As Bruce already pointed out, college football is a huge profit center for most universities, probably so too for the military, since they play in NCAA Div 1.

And at most universities, it pays for ALL the womens sports programs and money losing mens sports programs----and this was dictated by the gender equity police through NCAA title IX.

Crystal clear. Moon is saying that since most people participating in this thread are OK with tax dollars being wasted supporting a race team, we have no right to complain about anything else our tax dollars are used for...or taxes, period, for that matter. You make the call.

Moon sez to Carl: "I have a first name, you know" - immediately following my post that starts out "OK, Greg, you're in charge.... - and then he doesn't answer the question I asked. Which, of course, is a typical selective response tactic used by bombthrowers both right and left. The reason? Because the proper answer is both sensible and non-confrontational and that's not why Greg is here.

But Moon isn't the issue to begin with and I'm weary of the back-and-forth which will never resolve because he won't allow a resolution - ever. Back to the proposal. I'll be honest; I had no idea this deal was being voted on today. Caught me with my pants down, that's for sure.

And a pretty smart move on the part of Congresswoman McCollum, I'll say that. The Republican majority in the house has two choices - either vote against a spending cut which makes them look fiscally irresponsible, or vote for defunding military sponsorship of auto racing which they know will not only anger their voter base but is nothing but a political ploy in the first place. In either case, the Republicans lose and McCollum is a hero. Don't you just love the way things work on Capitol Hill?

Rats, I'm talking politics again. But I'm not choosing sides. Such maneuvering is equal-opportunity, used constantly by all 535 of those idiots at our expense. We can sit here and debate all day long whether or not the US Army's involvement in racing is worthwhile or not. It DOESN'T MATTER. It's a political tool, PERIOD. Get used to it; there's a lot more of the same coming.

This should be post of the year. All of this Bullsh*t is nothing more than political grandstanding by a typical politician.

whatever side you're on in this debate, one thing is for sure.
the USA war machine just keeps on turning.

the story i linked to in the previous post, the proposed 2009 adv't. and
recruiting budget for the army was $15.5 billion.
their target number of annual new recruits is 80,000

hold on to your hats........that's $193,750 per new recruit
and you haven't even clothed, housed, or trained the kid yet.
if that's not gov't. waste, then i don't know what is.

very informative thread - i've learned a lot in last couple days
i'd rather not know.

Hey, you could just bring back the draft. Try opening that can of worms.

The biggest problem in this country right now is the NOBODY wants THEIR benfits, pet programs, pork projects, or anything else cut. Let somebody else tighten their belt---but not me. Just like all the teachers in Wisconsin protesting cuts---cut somebody else, but not me. We have absolutely too many layers of government in the country that we can no longer afford, along with too many give away programs and too many people on the government tit. Unfortunately government is not run like a business nor will it ever be. Politicians on BOTH sides of the aisle love class warfare and keeping the electorate stirred up. Call it job security.

The teachers have agreed to every fiscal cut the governor demanded.
5.8% salary cuts, and increased pension contributions. All agreed to by the unions. Interestingly enough, police, firefighters, troopers and inspectors are all exempt.

There's 26 of them in this thread alone, by actual count. Most were quoted by somebody so they're actually in here twice.

Since you're tough enough to take the flak, I reckon you've got the right to say your mind. These forums are friendly dictatorships, not bound by the first amendment, but personally I like the banter. Makes life interesting. I hope they leave all your posts up. Gives me a bigger target. :)

Yup ... same thing with energy and utilities. The people scream about the cost of electricity and gasoline. "We need to drill at home", "We need to build windfarms", etc. Every time it comes up for referendum in a local community, all you here is "I'm all for it but not here in my town or my backyard" or "Windmills are ugly you can't build that here". People (especially activists) love to talk out both sides of their @$$.

See it all the time ... General public ranting in a political forum "What are you guys (Gov't) gonna do about this?". When solutions are proposed or offered, they get shot down by those same folks who continue screaming about how "something has to be done". Truly amazes me sometimes !!

Are all of my posts being deleted now?

Shouldn't be surprised I guess.

Only the ones where you make it a personal attack against others. The mods have been instructed to crack down on people attacking others. Its ok to disagree but when you take it to a personal level were not going to have that type of behavior allowed.

Thanks,
Shannon

As long as they are aimed at me, no problem, huh?

so can we suggest that someone just crawled out from under a barstool
without actually naming them? :D.........i LMAO when i read that!

I know why. It is called political favors.

But, that is going to backfire on him. The troopers, firefighters and cops have all rescinded their endorsements of him. He wont get them next election. Bet on that much.

I won't bet on anything at this point ... it is a very "what have you done for me in the last 5 minutes" world ... he will find some way to pander to every possible vote between now and the time it matters. All politicians do.

Chris,er

So what has changed, I got draftted in 1969 for war to this day I don't why we were there. I watch a President send us to poor house while fighting the cold war. sitting on the East German border making sure that we didn't mutuaally destroy one another. I watched a President botch a rescue mission. I've seen 2 Presidents lie. I've seen a President go war for a good reason. I've seen a President excute a vendetta. I've seen President's appoint incompetent people who did great harm to America and Americans. I've seen a President killed base on his ideology. I've seen President's shot for the same. But thru thick and thin I have supported who was in power at the time. Did my best be a proud America. A system which renews itself every 4 years, and 6 years. Live with majority rule for my whole adult life. What I see on some these post is that there some Americans who do dishonor to the system which has governed this country for over 200 years. Yes it is your right to have a grievance an offer it to whoever will listen. What I see here in this thread is hatred. Like this President is breaking new ground the political landscape. He is no different than the others before him. He is a politician that became Prewsident. That's what we do. President's do what is in there best interest from the begining of this republic to the present day. If it changes we will be under a dictatorship.
