Latest on Canopy

I think the ideas put forth by the Safety Safari people were good ones.

As far as an "advantage." If it's available to anyone who wants it, what's the prob???

A Ferrari is available to anyone who wants it too, but that doesn't mean they can afford it :D

My point being, some of the lower budget teams commented on affordability, especially if the canopy was mandated. The NHRA said it would not be mandatory, so then it becomes a "want" v. a "need". The lower budget teams may wipe out their entire budget with "needs" in order to make their car run competitively with nothing left for the "wants". If they can't afford it, they're at an even bigger performance disadvantage, given the canopy does provide an advantage.

I may be dead wrong, but I'd be shocked to see that the canopy offers a measurable performance advantage. It will bring some variety though. Remember when cars would show up out of the blue with some radically new ideas to be tried, and didn't have to go through this long approval process beforehand?

I wouldn't think that there would be any measurable advantage either over what they are currently running out there, the windshields are already moving the air over their rollcages.

However, I think that the NHRA is handling it in a professional manner this time around. Last year's fiasco with the canopies was a joke, and could have been avoided if they actually had the research on hand when the other teams complained about the perceived aero advantage.

Let's call it a day and just make all fuel racing a spec series. Exact same car, motor, clutch, blower. You know, exact same everything.

Then we make a rule where no one really gets in and drives the car. Instead the crew chiefs will pilot them by remote control. That leaves the drivers free to practice puking out 8 to 10 sponsors in front of the cameras as fast as they can. We'd of course change their name from drivers to carnival barkers, but isn't that what the NHRA wants anyway?

Oh ... and all owners will have to wear bright red button-down shirts and black slacks (no offense, Don ... really).

There, that should fix things.

At least until the next time someone tries to innovate something.

P.S. And please RESIZE your photos. The shot of Tony has blown my browser out to the size of a drive-in movie screen.

I say let them run it but don't make it mandatory. Will it disavantage the lower buck teams I am not sure. Back when canopys and aero effects were the norm in the late 80's the aero canopy cars werent exactly runaways and they weighed a crap load less then the cars do now. I think the only aero canopy car that really ran away so to speak was Garlits but I would bet thats more because of Garlits.

As for innovation, yeah you could say things are getting spec but in a sport like this in a class thats full of custom built cars rather then things based on production cars eventually everyone will eventually run pretty much the same thing not because of lack of innovation but more because everyone will follow the trick of the month to be competitive.

Thats why the 426 hemi became the engine of choice even today in its refined aftermarket all aluminium form because it worked and people started winning with it.

You know, Rajunz, I don't often respond to trolls, but when they go out of their way to ask for it ... I deliver. Especially when they've demonstrated they enjoy irritating people as much you do.

It's one thing to have opinions, quite another to act like yours are the only ones that matter.

First, you must be pretty damn thick not to recognize humor/sarcasm. But my guess is you did see it, and simply jumped at the opportunity to act like a jackass. You also strike me as the kind of guy who's been punched in the face more than a few times. And from what I've seen on NM, you undoubtedly deserved every shot you've ever taken.

Secondly, by using borderline profanity yourself to insult someone who's written something you couldn't quite wrap your tiny brain around, you prove yourself the bigger d-bag. No one made you sheriff here, buckwheat. You clear on that?

In the unlikely event Mr. Schumacher does respond, why don't we see if he saw the intended/inherent humor in my comment, and if he does, then let's send you back to trollville with those flapping gums of yours slammed shut.

Deal?

As to the parity issue, the top teams will always do what is necessary to win. Look at the TF points right now and tell me if the "little guy" has a chance to win right now?

DSR fields top level cars and will stay near the top of the list regardless, but the concept of "continual improvement" is a joke. It looks like more "Ban everything you don't understand".

Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong! :D
