Kurt Busch tests....

Bobby Bennett is right on in his article.

A lot of sportsman racers whine about not ever getting any exposure and here comes built-in exposure and they piss and moan about a silly technicality. Kurt Busch is NOT taking anyone's spot. Kurt Busch is paying to be there just like the rest of you. He is going to park in the sportsman pits with the rest of you. STFU and beat him, shake his hand at the top end and thank him for coming. I can guarantee you this, whichever of the whiners beat him will the first to crow about beating him. Hell, they will probably tell their grandkids about it.

I have never pulled for either of the Busch brothers in anything ... but goodness gracious it would be so awesome if he won the Wally.

I’m with you Chris. Kurt is going to bring more attention to SG that the class has had in a LONG TIME and people still find something to b!tch about.

Give some people $1m and they would complain they had to pay taxes on it!

I'd have to respecfully disagree with you a little bit, Chris. First of all, the media exposure will be on Kurt Busch...............not Super Gas. The only extra media exposure the class will get is going to be centered around him. It won't do the class itself anything significant because even if he raced in the class every free weekend he had, the extra people he would draw in would soon see the class for what it is, that being a technically challenging class that is only interesting to those of us who have or continue to keep competing in it. It's not entertaining to watch for the casual fan and because of that, they will soon migrate to the faster and louder cars that all other casual fans do.

Your points about him paying and parking with everyone else are well taken. However, understand that the only reason he isn't taking someone else's spot is because the field isn't full. If the field was full and others who have dedicated their time and money supporting the sport by racing Divisionals earning the almighty grade points were turned away, then this wouldn't be right. You call this a silly technicality, but the bottom line is that many of us have spent a significant amount of time and money over the years competing in these Divisionals for the chance to race for the big Wally and I don't think it's fair that their feelings are being undermined for this media blitz that will be so very short lived that it will do nothing significant for the class of Super Gas in the long run.

I'm not trying to get in a pissing match with you, Chris. Just my thoughts.......

I appreciate your thoughts Sean, but I disagree.

I am a firm believer in the adage "a rising tide lifts all boats". Super Gas gets ZERO exposure now. The stands empty when SG pulls into the lanes. You are correct the story will be more Kurt Busch than Super Gas, but the words Super Gas will be in there somewhere, which is more than has been said about SG in very long time. Here is another crazy thought, Kurt has a brother and it is no secret they are hyper-competitive with each other. If Kurt has a good time in Gainesville, and produces any kind of results, we just may see Kurt and Kyle at quarter mile near you. There are a lot of motivated crew guys in NASCAR with access to 358 cu in motors that may want to come and play too (think Jason Line). There is no downside to this story for anyone involved. The cameras may be focused on Kurt doing sportsman racing, but that is better than no cameras on sportsman racing, which is usually the case.

Even if the entries for SG get full for Gainesville, NHRA will just add one more spot, so there will be 91 instead of 90. Kurt will not take anyone's spot. The rule (or silly technicality as I called it) was created to keep "professional" sportsman racers (see Nickens, David) from sanction hopping and picking off the big trophies a long time ago. The INTENT of the rule is not to exclude occasional participants from National Events.

Lastly, I truly appreciate and respect the time, money and work it takes to field a sportsman race car and earn the graded points necessary to compete on a National Event level. It just seems counter-productive to me to not want some interested famous folks come play in your sandbox.

Your adage is very well put and I agree. And at the end of the day, as long as a Divisional regular doesn't have to miss out for Kurt to come play, then I'm fine with it.

It's refreshing and I appreciate being able to actually discuss a difference of opinion on here.

Kurt did some runs at Piedmont last fall with the Roy Hill School to get some seat time.

Reportedly this past weekend they had his SG ride at Piedmont giving some shake down passes. It's a turbo charged 3rd gen Hemi. Note the turbo inlet at the 'missing' headlight.

That is a sweet ride! Can't wait to see it.

Please forgive my limited knowledge of NASCAR but is Kurt the "good" one or the "bad" one?
Well when it comes to attitude, they both had BAD ones. Kurt has matured alot in recent years, his little brother is still a snot!

When it comes to driving, they can both drive the wheels off of anything. Kurt has a Cup car championship with Roush, his younger brother Kyle will surely go down as one of the best drivers ever in the sport of NASCAR.

When Kurt was working with Roy Hill back in the fall of last year, my brother and his two kids [ages 10 and 13] went to the track to watch. He said Kurt came up to them, introduced himself to the kids and was a genuine nice guy.

My Dad met Kurt a year or two ago on the Hot Rod Power Tour and they talked extensively [Herb drove for Roush many years ago....]. Again, I was told only good things about Kurt and how well he presented himself.

Thanks Lance!

The Busch brothers are Awesome!!! I am converting everyone in NASCAR to drag racers... LOL... Bringing lots of NASCAR peeps with me to Gainesville next weekend. :):D

Should be a LOT more press now.

Winning Atlanta Spring race two years in a row is quite a team effort.

Hopefully the press for his drag racing weekend will all be positive.

I understand the exposure will be great for the sport and NHRA, but I thought NHRA Required "grade points" to enter a national event in that class??:confused:

I'm sure NHRA will still allow the racer quota for SG racers' Grade pts. Whats one more car? Not to mention all the press he will bring to the track!

So... anyone watch any of the cup race at atlanta?.... that i counted i saw ..maybe 10 different times they mentioned Kurt going drag racing.... evne on the race show on speed after the win they interviewed him and he mentioned going drag racing before his race win.....

like how he mentioned on the finial restart he said he was imagining a "tree" infront of him and wanting to go and not spin the tires.... evne Waltrip mentioned he needed to take off like JOhn Force to beat JPM on the restart....

lot of drag referances and comments....

IN case some of you missed it... on ESPN2 on NASCAR Now .. they talked to Kurt from G-ville and talked about him drag racing this weekend..... it should re-air later tonight ....

I am sorry to say IMHO, but from the pictures posted of the car that I have seen, someone would have to leave before the tree is activated to cut a light in that car much less be consistent with a turbo. My prediction, you won't see Mr. Busch after first round. Not say he is not or could be a driver in that class, but give him something that is competitive. :p

I agree, I can't think of a worse setup to run in S/G. Don't get me wrong, the car looks great and I am a big fan of turbos but this isn't the "World Street Nationals" in Orlando, it's Super Gas in Gainsville. Turbos make great power, but consistency wins the race in S/G.....

I hope he does well, but in my opinion, the odds are against him. :)
