1993 and 1994 I was part of the NHRA/FIA International Drag Races. In 1993 the management at Fuji International Raceway wouldn't let NHRA spray VHT on the track, so I told my guys to fill the fuel tank to the brim. I believe I took this burnout to the finish line shown in the magazine clipping below.
One of my favorite stories: We had heavy rain one day and were told the fans would not get a rain check or their money back. They ask us to tow our cars down the track, and then they were going to tell the fans the race had been canceled due to rain. I felt sorry for the fans who came out to see us, so I wrapped the magnito and ignition in a plastic trash bag, suited up, and had the guys fire the car up behind the starting line, even though it was raining. Water was pouring in on top of me through the roof hatch. My guys fired the car up, put the body down, and I rolled up to do a burn out, and the photographers ran away from the guardrail, thinking I was crazy. I did a series of short little burnouts, the best I could. I backed up, staged the car, revved it up, and the tree came down. I let it back down to idle and drove it down the track very carefully, stopping every so often to whack the throttle a few times. I was soaking wet in the car. The fans were very appreciative. Bret Williamson and the rest of the racers followed suit. Great memories!
