Ace is all wrapped up in the money. He makes big bucks tuning Capps' car and being a big shot at Shoe Racing. Of course he is going to say what the guy who signs the front of his check wants him to say. This is as silly as some of you thinking he could kick Tny P's butt. He's older than I am, for Pete's sake. Legends die hard, I guess, and he never even was one.

Ed is his own man!
I've got $100.00 cash if you've got the stuff to print your reply and hand it to the "old man" at any given place off the racetrack property.
Just let me know when and where, and I'll buy a plane ticket to wherever and bring my $100.

Are you serious????

I'm sure Ace is very much past his prime, but the difference between him and most others is that regardless of that fact, there would be zero hesitation to say it to Tony and/or Cruz's face. Ace has performed his own type of plastic surgery before over the years, so if you think he's just spoutin' off, you're dreamin'. And as far as him never being a legend, I almost can't even respond to such a moronic statement. He has sustained a very long career in this sport and has won the U.S. Nationals more times than you've likely won a game of bingo.

From the day I saw him drive the gold Miller car back to the pits after smoking the tires in Indy, I've been an Ace fan. And instances like this only further cement my admiration for him. I can assure you he didn't say what he did because he's being puppeteered (spelling?) by Schumacher. He said it because he has the stones to say what he thinks.

while I agree with a lot of what he said...I don't think 1000' is a very good long term solution. Much of the best racing comes in that last 25% of the race, and we've lost that.

IMO crew chiefs probably aren't the best source on whether or not 1000' racing is a good idea or not...look at it this way; what NASCAR crew chief wouldn't be happier running 375 miles instead of 500, or what sports car lead engineer wouldn't be happier running 18 hours at Le Mans instead of 24?...heck, if if it's your job to keep a bomb together wouldn't you rather do it for 1000' rather than 1320'?

again, not saying anything derogatory about crew chiefs skills or anything like that, just saying there are other points of view to consider

Haha has anyone got that photo of Ace and Gordon Mineo?

Roger........ I'll bet when you were a kid you loved to go up to a hornets nest and poke at it with a stick! Obviously you never broke the habit judging by your reply to this thread.
The aces place in drag racing is cast in concrete and nothing you or anyone else has to say can change that! I'll bet he would love to hear your comment about him being Don Shumacher's puppet:rolleyes:

For those of you that are bowing at Ace McCulloch's feet, are also agreeing that the racing stay at 1000feet...you can't have it both ways folks.

Bowing at McCulloch's feet? Hardly.
Whatever the Drivers, Owners and NHRA decide is the best distance to race is fine with me, It's all good!;)

Why dont you take on Ace then LOL....ill put my money on Ace

Leave it a 1000'. If you think that's good for the sport...have at it. Without me. I can't get anyone to go anymore. Casual fans have forgotten about the NHRA. I've been a member for 24 years and it stops here. Between the Countdown and 1000', I have had enough. Those of you who know me and have seen my pictures know how big of fan I have been. If they are running people like me off, they are in trouble. Blast away, I couldn't care less. Did anybody else get the free tickets for the division race at Baytown? Here's a quote from the letter with the tickets, "All competition will take place to the 1320ft mark, none of this 1,000ft stuff." I'm going to try and make it to a division race for the first time (6 hour drive) because of this. The "pros" intrigue me less and less. Again, blast away.

Quote from the article:

“This is NHRA’s sandbox, if you play in their sandbox, you play by their rules,” McCulloch said. “Whatever they decide, team owners, drivers, crew chiefs, can talk about all they want, but the bottom line is that they (NHRA) will make the decision and that’s how it is.”

Yes, Ace, it is their sandbox and their rules. Playing by those rules, we lost Darrell Russell and Scott Kalitta in accidents that were equally foreseeable and preventable. How anyone can look at those incidents and think nothing has to change, well, that's beyond me. I don't get it. However, I would suggest Ace look at the stands next time he's at the starting line. Attendance is down. Ratings are down. A lot of longtime NHRA fans have been turned off by the NHRA's rules. This fan is damn sick of memorial stickers on race cars. Don't think the sport needs fixing? Fine. Maybe I'll go to that nostalgia race if the Pedregons decide to make some laps there. That is my decision and that's how it is. :/

Everything is easily forseeable after the fact. Its easy to say "Should have done this should have done that" after its allready happened. I bet everyone has had something happen to them at some point in their life where they have said afterwards "Why didn't I think of that before?" Accidents happen things break. It happens you just got to look at it and figure out why it happened.

Hypothetical - If 1000ft, the Countdown etc and car counts were still the same roughly, just with a few new names here and there in 5 years time....would you still be interested? Would your interest be roughly the same? What would you expect to see?
Given the fact that guys like Ace wont be around tuning these cars forever, Its a question worth some thought.

That is an interesting thought. If you look at the average age of a fuel car driver and the average age of a fuel car crew chief and the average age of a fuel car owner and look 5-10 years down the road, I would guess they would have a hard time maintaining car today's counts.

Half-Wit comment.........I would pay an admission fee just to watch Tony try and get in Ed's face. And I don't think money has anything to do with it, I'm pretty sure Ace will speak his thoughts irregardless....

I believe he holds the record for the most drag racing people (including fans) that kissed the ground after disagreeing with Ed to his face...
Anybody remember the time those Three guys were caught trying to steal the blower off his car on the ramp truck in that restaurant parking lot ? ...
How about the fan at Indy that wouldn't move out of Ed's pit entrance...
I was there for Waterman in the elevator lobby at Griswold's...

Tony might be young , but he would be taco meat after Ed was done...

I give him a "living legends" ranking... ;)

I'm with you man. As you can see from my avatar, I have been around this sport a long time. I am 46 years old. I went to the last 1/4 mile race NHRA put on at Norwalk, and then a couple of weeks later I went to the Night Of Fire event that was 1,000'. I haven't been back since. I hardly pay attention on tv. The only thing that was holding my interest this year, was the pick 'em game that used to be sponsored by CSK. I forgot to make my picks last week, so now I'm even done with that. I will pay less attention than I did last year. Next year, if it is the same, I will pay less attention than I did this year. Personally, I think they are losing fans faster than they are gaining them. Not only are they losing fans, they are losing longtime supporters like Barry and I. I have gone from 4 or 5 races a year, and dropping big bucks at events, to not going at all. Something needs to change. I don't have those answers, but somebody needs to figure them out. I don't have much faith that it will be figured out. Maybe the newer, younger fans will carry the torch. I'm not convinced their attention spans are long enough. Then again, how long does your attention span have to be at 1,000'!

Does anybody think we would be at 1000' had Scott's accident not happened? None of these racers had a problem with it beforehand...
