I've been to Indy the last couple years and have gotten through it pretty well. Mainly I spent the bulk of the money for lunch and had some food at the hotel. They do let you bring food in which is great. I used a small cooler with a couple bottles of water and something like a granola bar or two and I was good through the day. Also keep a water bottle and find the only working water fountains by the car corral and you can do it reasonably.

I think at Indy they were $5 a slice. Not too bad for track food.

My wife took her mother who was in her 90's to a baseball game and they searched her pocket book and took her candy bar.
I know someone who is in the front office for this baseball team and I told him the story and next thing I know the guy who owns the team shows up and tell me how sorry he is that it happened and he offers me Free tickets to a future game.
When I told him I did not want the Free tickets and that the only reason I told them about what happened was because it no way to built a business model if you want fans to come and watch a baseball game.
Between ticket prices and food prices none of these events could be considered fan friendly and when they start searching your back packs for a bottle of water I think they have really lost their minds.

I hate saying this, but big events, like national events, baseball games, etc etc are "soft targets". If some dirt bag terrorist wanted to sneak in explosives that look like a bottle of water & got away with it..... As much as I hate the track telling me no water & no back pack, I do understand why. Sign of the times I guess.
Been there done that, I guess that you haven't been to Disney where all of the water that they provide via water fountains in their parks hafta be rigged to taste like $hit so you have no choice but to purchase one of those $5 bad boys on a hot day unless, you purposely burn your tastebuds on a scalding cup of coffee before you enter then have at the water fountains.

While I see your point, Cliff, it doesn't add up. If their reasoning was for protection, the food prices at the stands wouldn't be as ridiculous as they are. It's about greed, plain and simple.

I understand that the track needs to make their money. WHP is the first track that I have gone to that charges for parking and won't let you bring anything into the track. Pomona, Indy, Denver and Phoenix (in the past) made their money in parking but lets you bring food and drink into the track. Topeka and Las Vegas have free parking but generally don't let you bring much in. I figure that is a fair trade off.
To me I think WHP is trying to get rid of the fans which would make it easier to close the track and build something else. They were parking most of the spectators cars on the other side of the lake when the the main lot was mostly empty.

There was a BBQ on the pit side at WHP that had pulled pork sandwiches for $15 and their signature burger for $17! And not even a combo meal! I might pay that for a burger in some swanky gourmet restaurant, but not for track food. At least at Pomona those kind of prices came with fries.....

Damn, it had better have been a 2 footer. I paid $5.00 for a cheeseburger, $4.00 for fries, and $4.00 for a coke. I did get an awesome breakfast at Zingos next to our hotel, and we did our usual Fri night trip to the Wool Growers while we were in Bakersfield.

Zingo's!? Man, you are a truck driver. Next time upgrade and go to Milt's or at least Denny's.
I'm surprised no one in the pits fed you. Make friends with "Jailbreak" guys, they always eat well. Even the Hot Rod guys bring in enough food for over 200 people.
I didn't make it to the March Meet this time, everyone bailed out on me.

I was hanging out with Hale and his BBQ all weekend, but when I was sitting in the stands I would sneak over to the snack bar for a cheeseburger and fries snack.

I know it was at the HRR last year because I had a float, and I think I saw it last weekend again but I didn't stop by. But, it is a treat as you say.

Reading all these posts reminds me why I never go to a race anymore, unless I go with someone who is racing. Too much hassle and expense. Maybe it's just old age, but I even gave up my Razorback Football tickets this year. After paying a seat lease, cushion rental, and a big price for a seat, it sucks to get ripped off again at the concession stand. Ball games and races look just fine on my big screen TV and a fridge full of cold beer and good eats is only 10 or 15 feet from my recliner. If I have to park in a parking lot and walk in, I am just not interested anymore.

The Maddern Racing Team has been known to do some damage at that place.
