Who else think the countdown is a bad idea? Nascar or NHRA, I think the talking heads of both are trying to appeal to the masses. But it does not work, IMHO. As a racer myself, if you make the points races, finish well to only have the points reset, would only piss me off. Before you know it NASCAR well stop the race 3/4 way thru and reverse the running order in order for the cars in the back to have a chance for the win.

In both NASCAR and NHRA , I feel the championship is arrived at in such a contrived manner. Was Tony Schumacher the only one who would have won it even without the lame playoff system? Not sure who would have won in PS or PSM, but Wilk would have won FC. Same in NASCAR, Carl Edwards would have won without the playoff. Where else but in motorsports do playoff teams play non-playoff teams? I'm definitely not a fan of it.

Does Drag Racing really want a World Championship that means something... Then the Top eight Teams in NHRA should have a play-off against The Top eight Teams from the IHRA... best of Seven Races... opps P/S classes won't work and there's no PSB at the IHRA...

It is what it is, this is the fourth points thing since I've started following Drag Racing... NASCAR's been through how many different ways?

I've learned to deal... doesn't peak my interest more... or less, overall. I have my favs I want to win... Races... The Top Ten Money is for Winter Bonuses.

I don't like either .. but you can't compare old way and new way in nascar the way you can in the NHRA. Points racing is a lots different for the guys that turn left. No way Jimmie Johnson coasts home to a 15th place finish sunday if he was down in the points ..

In the NHRA, they race to win all the time.. no one shows up planning to ride in the middle of the pack to protect their points. One of the many things that makes NHRA > nascar

I seem to be on the fence on this issue :D

Sad thing is nascars numbers have dropped since they went to their system. Nhra had an increase in tv attendence leading up to the countdown races last year. Not only could they not maintain it but they lost compared to other seasons. Like it or not it seems that they have both failed to draw as they were planned to do.

I don't get the "excitement" card that some pull. To me its exciting to watch THe RUN, or when Force, Scelzi and Capps were in a battle at the end. Its also a draw to see someone go on an amazing streak like Shoe did. Who can stop it becomes the attention grabber. I can't find excitement when I know its contrived and my only hope is that some poor teams doesn't get screwed. I can't take joy and excitement watching a team get penalized.

As for the champs, I have to double check on pro stock this year but I believe so for the countdown is 2 for 8 in crowning who earned the most points on the track all season.

Generally speaking, I like the idea of it all coming down to Pomona, but everyone knows that there is a difference in who is crowned the champ and who actually had the best season.

No matter what has happened in the past the top 10 are the only ones in contention after INDY anyway. Why strip someone of all their hard work over the racing season and make them start over. Playoffs are great for multiple player ball sports but it doesn't have a place in Drag Racing.

We have seen close championship runs in the past before the countdown and we see them now with the countdown. As a race fan and a contestant, I don't watch racing any more or less because of the countdown format.

I vote to get rid of IT! This all started because NHRA wanted to spark things up and attendance was dropping, however no matter what they do, they can't fix the economy and people can't always afford to come to the races no matter how close the points battles are or are not.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There are somethings we just shouldn't mess with.

Thanks,

Tony

Not Really on either side as far as the countdown goes.
I am not trying to compare our sport to the NFL, but last year didn't the New England Patriots have the best regular season ever, and they ended up losing to a team that had I think like the 13th best record in the regular season.

The only problem I have with the countdown, is how can you have someone win the championshp that can't even win a race for that year?

You could have that with the old system but, the winner is still going to be the one with the best overall average for the entire season. I'll root for an underdog to luck it through for an event win.

Seems to me it appears to be working. People are talking about the sport. The rules are the rules and if you don't like them, don't race. Since they are the rules for all the teams, all the teams have the same shot at it. If our sport is going to grow it has to bring excitement to people that do not have a lot of drag racing knowledge. For whatever it is worth, the world we are in likes to give the underdog a second chance and bring drama to the finals of everything, not just NHRA and NASCAR.

I will still watch and love drag racing even if they decide to invert the fields to make it more fair. I am just glad I do not have to write the rules.

I liked it better when it NATURALLY came down to Pomona. THEN it's special.

Like Dave Ramsey says, eat enough lobster and it tastes like soap.

A cookie is a treat. A bag of em and you're a pig.

The difference is that the Giants actually played other playoff teams. We've seen championships won under this format where you can win by having the pure luck of avoiding other playoff teams.

The other difference to the other sports is that there are 32 football teams and only 16 games in a season. They play 3 teams twice so teams only play 13 different teams. Hard to figure out who the best it then. In drag racing if you race the full circuit chances are you're gonna race everybody else...or at least those in contention for the championship

The only people talking about it are us diehard fans, and the majority of us hate it. No one else is talking about NHRA. Most of tje racers cant stand it if you talk to them in private. Ive only talked to 2 of them that like it, and the only reason they like it is b/c its the only chance they ever have of winning a fake championship.

Last time there was a poll here it was something close to 50-50 on it (just for round numbers). There are ~1500 Maters. So that means that ~750, heck, let's just call it 1000 people here hate it.

There were something like 30,000 people in Pomona this weekend? And the TV shows get something like 300,000 watching? So the Mater Haters here are something like 0.3% of the total fan base?

And you have to consider us here some of the most die-hard fans on the planet, no? Yes, we might be what marketers call "influencers", but to what extent? 2:1? 5:1? 10:1? So we influence and/or represent 3% of the fan base?

Whether its the countdown or 1000', I'm not sure the opinion of this tiny little group matters all that much. Sorry...

Exactly, this is what I have said all along. People are p*ssing into the wind on this subject when they continuously state how the Countdown is hurting the sport. The way the petition fell flat on its face shows not many people care about saving the old system.
