The Broken Rearend Issue (7 Viewers)

So Alan, ya think a sidewinder with chain drive can go 340? Just need to come up with a "chain blanket". heh

Considering that when Big brought that car out they had less than 1/3 of the horsepower they have now, (and was breaking parts then) I doubt it would get to the tree.

I would be happy to watch a video, but again, I don't want to be within ten miles of the place.

Can you imagine the look on the faces of Nhra officials when you tried to go through tech!

went back and watched rob wedland's 'rear end' video where he has a ring and pinion magnufluxed with some sort of
iron dyed penetrant. quite revealing to say the least, even after watching it again ....... and it hasn't even been determined
if the rwr failures were the gears. it's a wonder these cars can make a clean pass.

The only flaws in the documentary's are, they need to pronounce the last names right.
I saw them at Seattle 3 or 4 times in the 70s

Entertaining video, low budget but fun. Linda Vaughn and probably a bunch of other famous people not identified. Not much editing the photos didn't always match the narration. Chuckled when they showed a photo of a front engine dragster and the 50th annual Winternationals, the dates were Feb. 11-14 2010!

I don't wanna be within 10 miles of the place when that chain breaks at 340+ MPH.

Alan
Was leaning on the fence next to the burnout area at Green Valley back in the 80's. Less than 10-20ft. away when a motorcycle locked up blowing his chain everywhere. It was what I imagine a grenade going off. Alan's post made me chuckle and look back at how stupid we were as kids and track owners.

Please don't suggest chains for a race car's. I started dear old John Force's rear engine funny car and became a member of of John's chain gang. (should have ducked). I have also been rapped with a blower chain from a front motor car when I was flag starting. chains work well on bicycles LOL.

Larry got a question. What block did Waterman prefer when he was building Fuel engines.
Harry
Sydney preferred any engine that came with a paying customer,;) really Sid did great on all types and always ran on the safe side of every car he worked on. One funny story about Sid before the car would stage Sid would wing the throttle lightly and then he would act like he would be adjusting the barrel valve then he would wing it harder and give the driver OK. he looked like a pro by doing that.🤣

I don't know who is behind these "Burnout Society" videos, but I have not been impressed. Too many errors. Comes across to me as too much "AI" content - mispronouncing common names, etc. It's too bad, as they pick good drag racing topics.

When Warren-Coburn-Miller came out with their back motor car in 1972, Sid Waterman built the motor. Saw that car at Lions & Sid was there. Asked Sid if he was gonna put the car "in the .20's" (as in 6.20's).

That's why I don't understand how the small tracks allow crowds gathered on the starting line. I saw a video of a harmonic balancer come off a Chevy during the burnout and lucky it didn't mow someone down....
A friend of mine got some clutch fiber to his abdomen one time when a clutch lining turned loose at the hit.

Brian Lohnes, story on Diamond Dave Miller there's a spot where that is going on 😹

Just thinking of all the time and $$ Big spent on experimenting with different ideas that DIDN'T work out, wow. It wasn't like he had money to burn. And thankfully the ONE that changed TF forever.
He has my respect.
He said that during the 60's there were a few years he made over a million dollars with all the match racing and sponsors.I don't know what that equates to today but it's a lot.

Anybody remember when breaking wheel studs was happening fairly regularly? Same place, beteween 1.7 and 2.5 almost evey time.
For sure, two separate time periods if I remember. There were a rash of wheel studs being sheered off in 2009-2010 that included Daniel Wilkerson's crash at Memphis and of course Antron's horrible crash here in Phoenix.

The second time period I remember Tommy Johnson losing a tire here in Phoenix and then, I think did it later that year (or maybe the year before) at Sonoma. Tommy's deal here ended up making for one of my best sequences ever.
