shirley goin testin

I am a big Doug fan... but I wouldnt walk across the street to see her run the car. Just one guys personal feelings.

Shirley Muldowney returning to the driver's seat is exactly what the sport of NHRA Drag Racing needs. The sport has kinda fallen into a rut and it needs a kick-start. Shirley's comeback would be wonderful.

As far as Shirley licensing in Herbert's car, true - some changes would need to be made. Above all, the first thing that comes to mind is her special clutch pedal will have to be installed. Many years ago, John Muldowney built a special clutch pedal for his Mom because of her fused left ankle. She's had that pedal in every car since the accident. I really don't think any adjustment to Doug's car would be that big of a deal. I'm sure Doug Herbert would be willing to make any changes needed to his car for Shirley. They have been great friends for many years.

In regards to what scores she has to settle, there ARE a few. Some feel she needs to let grudges go after all of these years - why? If you are wronged by a particular party I think you have every right to be as angry as you want for how long you want. Hell, I hold a few grudges against some people.

Years ago when I was working as a crew member for a prominant Stock Car team, we got screwed out of a win because of some behind the scenes, back-handed actions by the sanctioning body. We won the race but the record will show we finished second - to a guy that was on pit road twice - under the green flag - with the hood up. By my count, this clown was at least 6 laps down but he still won. We protested the finish and still lost. We found out later that the Official Series Scorer took the night off and this particular driver's relative was filling in as Official Scorer. The driver had a bunch of people there from his sponsor and he needed the win - he got the win and we got screwed. 16 years later, I still hold a grudge over that and whenever my path and this driver's paths have crossed, I won't look at him or talk to him - I hate him.

Shirley has every right to hold what grudges she wants - esspecially against any current Top Fuel teams out of Michigan. Shirley and I have had many lengthy conversations about those people and her feelings are justified. If you only knew the whole story.....

Any of the nay-sayers out there - keep it up!!! It pisses her off whenever somebody tells her she can't do something. The more pissed she gets, the better she is in the car. I guarantee you, she can still whip their asses!!!

Dave

If they knew half the story. There will be a Pink car at Indy. Right Dave ?

Personally, I would absolutely love to see Shirley in action again. She was my inspiration growing up. The first time I met her, I was three years old and that was when I fell in-love with drag racing... and Pink!
I love her personality. It is great to see people these days who aren't afraid to speak their mind. Everyone usually walks on egg shells when they speak, but not Shirley! She's as real as they get.

I still have my US Nationals Shirley Muldowney t shirt from 1987 and I need it autographed again since she signed my pit sticker at that time.

Score to settle? Just how does she plan on settling that score? My money says it won't be settled on a drag strip in her favor. This ain't 1975 when you can call up Ed Pink and get the best of the best.

That may be true but im sure there are good crew chiefs out there who are upto date with the modern stuff know what to buy and how to assemble it and run it.

Dave nobody can deny Shirley's impact on this sport over the past 40 years! But the idea that Drag racing needs 70 year old drivers to get fans back means this sport must be on life support!

Here's an angle in favor of the seventy year olds;

Just think of how magnificent it would be to see Willie Mays, Gordie Howe, Wilt Chamberlain and so on, go back to their sports and compete with the current participants!

That can't happen, of course, because their bodies are too aged to allow such a thing.

HOWEVER,

In drag racing, such a thing is indeed possible. That is one angle drag racing has that just cannot be found in most other areas of professional sports.

Just look at actor Jason Lee. He was a pro skateboarder and had to turn to sitcoms to make a living when he was too old to skate competitively. (I just recently got into My Name is Earl, which has been canceled for a year or so) I can tie this up together - the show is about karma, and I have previously suggested (post #3 in this thread) that Shirley holding grudges for decades may not be the best thing for her spiritually (which could be considered karma, I guess?)

Look at the middle east, for example. They hold grudges over there for thousands of years! So I guess it is a good thing to do that after all!

I totally love this. The sport has advanced to the point where women drivers are so common place, it's pretty tough for those haters out there to b*tch about Shirley because she's a woman.

So what else can we whine about - let's try her age? Is her age really the best you can come up with? If some 70 year old - man or woman - showed up today and wanted to jump in a modern Fueler - having never been down a Drag Strip, I'd be a little concerned. Shirley has Drag Raced Nitro Cars for the majority of her life. It's kinda a natural thing for her to drive. When Don Garlits returned to the cockpit of a Top Fueler a few years ago, I didn't hear anybody complaining about his age. Don was in his 70's. All I heard was "GO BIG DADDY!!!!" The only reason Don stopped drivng a Top Fuel car is because Pat asked him to quit. No it wasn't NHRA. At the end of 2003, Don was in negotiations with sponsors and he was going to have a new car built. Pat wanted him to stop and he agreed.

This is not a "all she's done for Drag Racing" post, it's about who Shirley is and her following. Shirley Muldowney is a name that is well known throughout the world. Yeah, yeah, I know, you went up to somebody on the street today and asked them if they know who Shirley Muldowney is? As screwed up as some people are in this world today, you could ask that same person what their own name is - and they'd have trouble with that question. Ever watch Jay Leno do his "Jaywalking" on the Tonight Show? Shirley's legendary status is good for Drag Racing - no matter what her age is.

So you think Shirley is too old - you make me laugh. With the exeception of some leg and ankle damage, Shirley is in a lot better shape than some 30 year old's I know. I find it odd how so many people can decide that somebody isn't qualified to go Drag Racing for one reason or another - when I'd bet the majority of those people have NEVER been down a Drag Strip.

You don't have to like Shirley, but your reasoning for not liking her is lame. Her age? give me a break. If she passes the physical she can re-license. Then she will decided if she can still drive.

BTW, to those who think there is no story about Shirley and kalitta, or it's all B.S., or there are two sides to every story - why don't one of you wizards go ask Mr. kalitta about it and get his side. Then post the answer here, I love a good comedy!!!

Dave

Hey, more power to her. Last time I looked, its a free country we live in (at least for right now). If she passes the physical, let her give it hell. At least with Shirley we wont hear the same old bland canned sponsor plugs you do from most of the other drivers. She definitely adds color to the sport. As for her age, who cares. Look at the Greek. I do hope she can be at least a little more competitive and can attract the funding to do so. Only thing else I wish is that she could have showed up at Kalitta's roast. Now I would buy a ticket to that at ANY price.:D
