shirley goin testin

I thought it was funny that she said she still had scores to settle. Who the heck is racing from when she was that she would feel the need to settle a score with???

The only Top Fule racer that comes to mind for me is Cory Mac.:confused: He beat her at the Las Vegas Fall Race in '03 and of course the next race in round 2 in Pomona,CA- which was then-The Last Pass!

At the risk of being captain obvious, Team Kalitta?

I would think the scores to settle with people from her era that are still racing would be the Kalitta camp and her ex, Tobler (but he's in FC now). Regarding her driving, only she'll know if she's up to it when she straps in. As far as marketability for a 70 year old, well she has an edge over younger racers in that she's a huge name with a huge history, and sports fans love when retired legends make comebacks (although they don't always turn out well).

Or the scores to settle weren't with individuals but possibly an organization or two, nay-sayers, a particular gender, etc. Look back to how she was treated from the get-go.

i gotta be honest, i'm concerned when someone 60 years or older is driving one of theses cars. I'm not saying shirley or anyone that falls into that category cannot still drive , my concern is, can they survive the unfortunate circumstance of a wreck if it happens. Most of the current drivers in nitro are relatively strong healthy individuals and i know there are some 60 plus year olds who are currently driving, but most of those guys are very healthy for their age. Most of the current crop of drivers could sustain some bumps and bruises or can get knocked around and still come out of a incident ok !

hey I am 63 years old and i define you to show up for a 2 out of 3 race for what ever you can afford to see if age makes a difference LOL . let me know hat kind of car you race to set up the race . i bet i can find someone who is over 63 years of age in your class to run you > your post

That can go for anyone in any walk of life. Sooner or later everyone has to take the uniform and know the race is over.

The way I read it SHIRLEY was driving, not Angelle (insert last names here)

Now that's funny right there....

there is a fine line between speaking your mind and just sounding bitter about everything. I think she spends too much time on the wrong side of that line...I agree though that it would be great to have her back out there.

....and PJ, Shirley's gonna get you.

Given the size difference of Doug and Shirley,
wouldn't it take a major rebuild of Doug's Digger?
And so what if it did? Sponsorship money talks!
Did I just answer my own question?
Take me to the home now.
Just sayin.

Geeez, Shirley. Holding grudges for decades may not be the most spiritually enlightened way to deal with those past issues. Carrying around that much animus for so long may be hurting her as much as she wants to hurt those on her nixonian enemies list.

Some forgiveness in her mind may actually be helpful to her, and nobody's the same person they were one, two, three or four decades ago. (For example, isn't Dave Settles hanging out in airports with a shaved head dressed in sheets preaching the benefits of the Hare Krishna these days?)

I wish her team great success. Especially if her son John is involved with the team. Like she said in the current ND, he never got much recognition for his many talents and contributions. It's also nice that they reconciled. Family feuds just suck.

Shirley Muldowney returning to the driver's seat is exactly what the sport of NHRA Drag Racing needs. The sport has kinda fallen into a rut and it needs a kick-start. Shirley's comeback would be wonderful.

As far as Shirley licensing in Herbert's car, true - some changes would need to be made. Above all, the first thing that comes to mind is her special clutch pedal will have to be installed. Many years ago, John Muldowney built a special clutch pedal for his Mom because of her fused left ankle. She's had that pedal in every car since the accident. I really don't think any adjustment to Doug's car would be that big of a deal. I'm sure Doug Herbert would be willing to make any changes needed to his car for Shirley. They have been great friends for many years.

In regards to what scores she has to settle, there ARE a few. Some feel she needs to let grudges go after all of these years - why? If you are wronged by a particular party I think you have every right to be as angry as you want for how long you want. Hell, I hold a few grudges against some people.

Years ago when I was working as a crew member for a prominant Stock Car team, we got screwed out of a win because of some behind the scenes, back-handed actions by the sanctioning body. We won the race but the record will show we finished second - to a guy that was on pit road twice - under the green flag - with the hood up. By my count, this clown was at least 6 laps down but he still won. We protested the finish and still lost. We found out later that the Official Series Scorer took the night off and this particular driver's relative was filling in as Official Scorer. The driver had a bunch of people there from his sponsor and he needed the win - he got the win and we got screwed. 16 years later, I still hold a grudge over that and whenever my path and this driver's paths have crossed, I won't look at him or talk to him - I hate him.

Shirley has every right to hold what grudges she wants - esspecially against any current Top Fuel teams out of Michigan. Shirley and I have had many lengthy conversations about those people and her feelings are justified. If you only knew the whole story.....

Any of the nay-sayers out there - keep it up!!! It pisses her off whenever somebody tells her she can't do something. The more pissed she gets, the better she is in the car. I guarantee you, she can still whip their asses!!!

Come on now Dave, don't bring it up if you're not going to tell the story.....that's just a tease!

I guess you havent been to the Hot Rod Reunion or March Meet.:D

For many years before Shirley retired she did not run NHRA events. If memory serves me she mostly did the match race thing and ran an occasional national event. I assumed she did not have a sponser willing to give her the big bucks to race the NHRA circuit and elected to do match races and kick back and enjoy life, good for her. If she can find someone in this economy willing to give her a couple million dollars to run up front I must say I'll be suprised. As far as the comments about the team from Michigan and her as we all know there are two sides to every story and so far we dont know either side so why bother to bring it up at all?
All they really need to do on Dougs car is throw one of those plastic milk crates in it to jack Shirley up a foot or so!;)
