Maple Grove- Sunday Eliminations

matt with a utube short out today
I thought for sure when I saw the title it was Matt apologizing for saying something in the heat of the moment. Glad he's doubling down on this. From race two (I believe it was) with Johnny Gray you could see there was a problem.

Out of curiosity, has there ever been any actual scientific analysis on the correlation between vinyl wraps and these body incidents?

I'm far from an engineer but these cars have burst panels. Make them much larger. They are obviously pumping more fuel into these to make them quicker and faster but they are not compensating for a catastrophic failure. Take JFR for instance, they have burst panels on the topside running parallel of the supercharger. widen the panel double or 75% more with a tether or the other body styles, enlarge them 50-75% larger. tethered of course. I believe that would allow for the concussion of the explosion to exit quickly and allow for the body to stay intact. If you lenghen the tethers to allow the body to clear the chassis, where is it going to land? the side and jerk the car to the wall or the other lane? Everything is body wraps so it would be simple to have the wrap perforated or blended in with the sponsor that the fan wouldn't even know the difference.
this seems like a practical solution to the problem. why no comments ? another question, since so many drivers are anti-tether, would a boycot be feasible ? and finally, Alan Reinhart, I would also like to hear your take on subject.

Good thing they decide to only broadcast 3 PS pairs per show, no one will know.
Seriously, why would anyone sponsor a PS car these days with little or no TV exposure on race day?
Who made this decision? NHRA? Fox? Sucks either way.
IT seems like nhra hates ps,or at least trying to kill the class,if i was a sponsor id be furious on the lack of coverage. Foxs broadcast this year has not been good from the previous years.

My additonal thought on this issue is. They have been claiming that T/F consumes approx. 15 gallons of fuel per pass For many years now. Start to finish..... Start, burnout, back up then go. I'm led to believe to acheive the e.t.'s and m.p.h. today, they are consuming much more per pass than 15 gallons of fuel that they bragged about to the viewers. Problem is that they didn't address is the size of the body burst panels due to the increase of fuel into the motors. Does this or doesn't this make sense?? The bigger the amount of fuel going in must need a bigger exit coming out if it chooses Not to leave the headers!

As I recall he was trapped in a burning car wasn’t he?

I've been wondering if the vinyl wraps are adding just enough enforcement to keep the body from bursting apart into smaller sections, eliminating that large area that blocks the view.
Also is the Carbon fiber contributing to the problem.

when i first read this i thought you were referring to intake burst panels. then i realized you meant body burst panels.
last year (2024) at brainerd, we had the jr todd retrofit with napa body incident. while watching that thrash take place, i was standing next to the dhl
body jr had just destroyed. i don't pretend to know differences in body burst panels from one team to next, but i will say i saw the physical panel that had
been dislodged from the dhl toyota body. the area of the panel was much larger than i would have ever guessed. 3 distinct holes. if memory is correct,
the piece that blew off, or separated was a single piece that mounted around the 3 holes??

Good point. I know the burnouts have gotten significantly shorter over the years. I think that could save a gallon or two.

if i may ask a silly question! why does the tether need to be so short? why not design it to be long enough to allow the body to separate from the car, but not long enough to allow the body to fly into the grandstands
I would think it would become a big sail and no telling which way the car would go. Not sure they tried that sometime back.

Kalitta gets the award for coolest cat around with that interview after the crash. 300 mph crash and calmly ‘we’ll get the backup car out and see what we can do’.
Since Connie and Doug are very well-healed financially, I wonder if they offer to pay for the repairs to the Tony S. car. Yes, Tony Stewart is worth many millions too, but it seems like the right thing to do for the Kalittas. If so, would us fans even hear about this sportsman-like gesture?

Let's say the "Hood" is 4' wide and that is the structural strength of the body. You need to relieve the concussion in the event of a backfire so it doesn't split the body down the middle (Anyone remember that?) So you put a one foot wide burst panel in to save the body. If that is enough to relieve the concussion, then you are good. But it is not. Turns out that a one foot panel is not big enough, so you make the panel bigger to save the body from catastrophic damage, you now have weakened the body structure substantially and increased the chances of the body splitting sideways. At that point leaving the front attached to the car and sending the back half into the air. Google Jack Beckman Epping Explosion. That is a prime example but far from the only one that made it very obvious that the body needs to be kept on the car, or at least on the "Field" and kept out the spectator areas. Since the front end is now secure, the rear was tethered to the front to keep it on the car and it works. But now there is a new problem.

Everyone says: "I don't have the answer" I don't either, but I do know where I would start and it's not on a chat board. But to think that no one is working on it is ridiculous, there is much discussion and many ideas being exchanged. Here's what you can't do. Scrap the tethers without having a solution that keeps the bodies out of the stands.

Strictly my opinion.
Alan

Maybe with coupes & sedans dwindling in production. We will see a SUV funny car, with the engine behind the driver, in the future. 🤷🏻‍♂️😁

Not to be cold hearted but kill a spectator loose racetrack, kill a driver and sell out the next race. I don't want anyone to be hurt let alone be killed but the average fan wants the danger element. Go to your local dirt track on a Saturday night and watch how many fans want to see a bad wreck or flip.

IMO building a smaller bomb might help. presently too much fuel and air. smaller pumps and less air will follow.
maybe should have mandated a limit on the pump size a long time ago?
e.t.'s and mph will decrease. oh well, maybe it's about time.
the top fuel explosions are just as bad with the big slicks exposed and a potential accident there too.

That's the exact same thought that I had. A retractable cable that would drag the body behind the chutes.
I don't like the idea of that at all. The odds of it getting tangled in the chute lines, pieces of it breaking off and becoming entangled with the chassis or the tires - or the car in the other lane - (in my opinion) could cause a much more catastrophic situation than the body simply blowing off the car. Unless I've missed something, not once in the history of drag racing has a funny car body flown into the stands.

FS1, at least in this area, airs a 3-hour broadcast early and then another later in the evening. I haven't watched the early one since Brainerd but from what I hear PS and PSM E1 and 2 are covered during the early one, 3 and 4 in the evening. Makes no sense to me but I suppose they have their reasons.

I say don’t make them mandatory. However if the body comes off during a run, the pass is disqualified. That way the teams can decide for themselves.

They never show 1st and 2nd rd of pro stock in its entirety, nhra is trying to kill the class. BUT they can show 5 diffrent reruns of nitro cars and have highlights of nitro rounds we just saw 30 min ago over amd over again.
