live TV what do you think ??

I saw Epping live on ESPN/ESPN3, and saw Joliet live on the Motel 6 Vision (or whatever it is these days) from the stands. I couldn't believe all the fluff pieces they were showing as the cars were doing burnouts, etc. It's great that in this world of instant social media, that tv can keep the sport relevant.. kinda like 22 years ago when the first race was live and about 6-8 races a year were live. It's great for now, until that first oil down during the funny car final that delays the top fuel final, but ESPN2 stuck with qualifying when it went long so you never know! If any of them at all should be live, it's Indy. They already give you a 6 hour Monday show. The race is run from 11am est to 4pm est. The tv show is from 12pm est to 6pm est. How could they not fill the full thing in live?

We enjoyed the Epping and Route 66 coverage, both the taped portions and the live coverage. Epping was much more exciting but that's because the racing was more exciting. Like Dave said, though, a long delay would leave a completely different impression.

When they go Live and you hear that Echo from the P A it's like being there . Now if they can just find a way to put the ground pounding Insane Power Smell and Noise out .
Live lends another dimension to watching Drag Racing we never had in the Old Days . My caps off for not only ESPN but the teams who must have their game go like clockwork because that's what it is .
The Teams efforts are what allows Live Coverage .

That echo you hear is in Dunn and Rieff's mics, it isn't supposed to be there and it was driving me crazy. They got it sorted in the second half hour of the live portion. I noticed they had the same issue in Epping when they went live. Other than that, I love the live show.

two races in a row missed, and really not missing them at all.....no time to watch in middle of summer afternoon.

Nay, I already fast forward thru all the BS just to see the races when I record it. Now, I just have more junk to forward thru. Show the damn races! ALL of them.

I agree Lee, it adds another dimension, makes the teams more of the show. I like the between round thrashes, and stuff like what happened to Brittany adds to the broadcast.

Like the Epping broadcast, I enjoyed it all, especially the stuff during the turnaround. Also enjoyed Jamie Howe's work once again. Her segments are quickly becoming the highlight for me...no stupid questions or fluff, just stuff I'd like to hear about. As I said before, not sure I'd want to have live broadcasts all the time, but as a change of pace I really like it. Kudos once again to the entire broadcast team.

I'm just tired of eight cameras all at track-level trying to follow the cars.

BLUR-cut-BLUR-cut-BLUR-cut.......

BangShift has it right- let's watch the actual race from a position that you can see the actual race.
All the cameras are too low and too close. I can't hear it any better and can't smell it through my TV, so being closer doesn't really help....

Like Martin says above. I think a lot of us like the old Diamond P races because they were shot like that. You got a sense of the acceleration and speed because you actually saw a lot of the track, adding reference. What did Diamond P have? Three cameras? Four? It was enough. Again, I place the blame on the soap opera producers for these choices.

Still, good show. No hitches except a little (real) drama with Brittany's team, but then we've all seen that happen. Someone late for the call, bombing through the pits to the staging lanes as fast as they can go without being fined.

Now, if I can only get the racer's ears for a moment. When Gary asks them how did it "feel", I want them to look dejected, hold their arms out, and say "I need a hug Gary" then hug him, with a little squeeze to his a$$ for good measure. Maybe then they'll let Gary ask the questions I am sure he wants to ask. I've seen Gary Gerould in auto racing of different types (not an NBA fan at all, so never saw him there). He's a smart guy. He knows racing. I know it's not him, but those soap opera producers telling him to get the "touchy feely" side for their human interest fetish they must suffer from. So I say, give them touchy feely.

Now, if only Steve Matchett was interested in Drag Racing. Him and Dunn would be an awesome pair. Steve was on IndyCar from Houston this past weekend. The guy knows how to boil down techy-mechanical stuff for layman, without boring the people that understand it. Rare quality.

I was undecided on any difference it may be making to have live telecast. Then, yesterday, the owner of our company came into my office all excited. He had come across the live telecast and said he got hooked for the afternoon. He said he loved the timing and the turnaround issues. Probably the fact that Brittany was going rounds and getting a lot of attention was a big part of it but it was a good indication that some people like it!!

For the diehard fan it's ok, they understand the wait. But for the casual fan scanning g the channels, when he/she sees racing, it's a long time, many segments
before the final. I can take it or leave it, but if it's goal is to bring in new fans, I'm afraid it failed.

If a NASCAR race is on I believe "NASCAR guy" sitting on his couch, flips channels all day until 20 to go in the race, so "NASCAR guy" might get "locked in" on NHRA. This is good. Frankly, I don't see how anyone could not like the LIVE option. It affords those who want to see it LIVE with the opportunity. If you are accustomed to the late nite Sunday night I would assume you DVR it. It's a win, win. My overall theory is Sunday afternoon is RSVP'd for sports action and that's when the NHRA should be airing.

Nice to see NHRA broadcasts start on time! Also, when tapped, ESPN2 dumps Drag Race broadcasts late in the evenings. And I need my Beauty Sleep!!!
