THe wife and I are going to take a little weekend vacation and I am thinking about going to Tahoe but I have never been. Anyone have any recommendations or suggestions on Tahoe (where to stay, eat, etc)? And the Montbleu Resort/Casino? We will be going the 2nd week of January more than likey b/c I have to use 2 airline tickets I won in a poker tourney before Jan 24th. Thanks.

Other question, would you rather go to Vegas or Tahoe?

Lake Tahoe is absolutely beautiful anytime of the year, but I think the best time to go is in late spring- early summer! There is way more to do than just gambling. You have to take the Heavenly tram to the top of the mountain and have lunch or dinner!!! The view from there is breathtaking of the lake itself! Of course, if you go during the winter months you can snow ski along with gambling, sightseeing, etc...
Vegas may have WAY more casinos and shows, but Tahoe has so much more to do away from the tables!

You'll be hard pressed to find anywhere that's any prettier than Lake Tahoe. There are plenty of casino and entertainment options, and even more in Reno, which is about 1 to 1 1/2 hours drive from South Lake Tahoe. You have to be skiing at Heavenly Ski Resort to be able to take the tram to the top of the mountian, but there is another lift from the central area of South Lake Tahoe that you can take to get an outstanding view of the lake. You can take 3 hours or so and drive completely around the lake. If you want constant gambling, eating, etc. go to Vegas. But I'll take Lake Tahoe anytime.

Murdock.

Go to Tahoe, rent yourself a 4WD vehicle (in the event the area is packed with snow) get a map, and take a drive up to Virginia City. Great small town left over from the silver mining days, with cool shops to check out, a very old cemetary, and other cool stuff. You might even see some wild mustangs wandering around the high desert area on the way up. Virgina City is way cool, we haven't been up there for a few years, but I definitely want to get back up.

The last time I was there, the Bucket of Blood was too.

Heavenly does own the tram near the State line. That is an awesome thing to do and the view from the observation platform is amazing.

Montbleu is the old Ceasers (Smokin’ Aces was filmed there). Not a bad casino, but if you are going in January, it is cold. Harvey’s and Harrah’s are connected by a tunnel under the street which allows you to get a change a venue without going outside.

My in-laws live 20 minutes from the lake and I used to live 1 ½ hours from there. I have spent a lot of time there and would pick that over Vegas any day.

Justin, PM me your e-mail and I will send you some pics if you want and answer any questions you might have.

Alan, is the Bucket of Blood Saloon still there?

We haven't been for a few years, but I believe it is. There was also a really cool store called 'The Gifted Cowboy' that had a wall full of various hot sauces. (I am a hot sauce fanatic). I can't remember if it was the Bucket of Blood, but someplace had monster hot dogs for a buck....

I gotta get up there again, either to Tahoe or Reno for a weekend and go up to VC for the day........

I can get to Reno in about 2.5 hours, so it's not a big trip.

You've got great advice above. Tahoe is great and VC and Reno are both close by. Besides, we can always use your money here. ;) :D

Yeah, well I've left plenty of money there in my trips to Reno. However, my wife has always done well in Reno, and taken plenty of your money back to California with her!! :D:D

All of the above are cool, Heavenly,VC(Bucket of Blood & cemetary). I would go on a cruise on the lake aboard the MS Dixie(Paddle wheel river boat). They have breakfast, lunch and dinner cruises. The also just have cruises across the lake to Emerald Bay. Down the street is IZZY'S burgers, really good. The buffet at Harrah's amazing, top of the hotel by Heavenly, great view and super desserts. Have a good time.

I stay at the North end of the lake usually around Tahoe City. It is like it was 100 yrs ago & none of the flash or casinos. Try it, it is a real Tahoe experience.

Yup, it's nice there too. Just a reminder though. Some/much of this depends on what time of the year you're there. In the Spring/Summer you can enjoy the outdoors more, other than ski/board stuff in the winter. We try to go for a drive all the way around the lake each year. It makes a great trip, with lots to see and do.

Of course it's nicer, if you can drive with the top down, to really take it all in. ;)

Did they close the Ponderosa Ranch? I thought I read somewhere that a developer had bought the property. That was kind of a cool touristy thing to check out.

Yup, all gone now. We went on their breakfast ride years ago. Horse back ride up the mountain and breakfast with a great view of the area at the top. Use to go water rafting on the Truckee river too. :)

Alan, Update: Just saw in todays paper they are opening on Nov.16th. :)

Now that place can suck your wallet dry. I'm gonna be in trouble when the Bass Pro Shops opens up in Manteca,CA. It's only 15 minutes from my house. I spent like 2 hours in the Vegas store the first time I was there.
