I am thinking you are correct, since KB has used that tactic in the past. I know some people don't like the approach of trying to qualify near the bottom so one can face-off with the point's leader in round one and get him (or her in this case) out of there, but I have enjoyed watching it unfold. If in fact it is what happened this time, it was costly.

even if they were trying, it doesn't matter because erica seems to now, not only have her normal starting line advantages but now is running a couple hundredths faster, so any kind of qualifying games would probably be futile !

I was there watching; Glenn backed 'er down during Q2 at around 1100 feet for no obvious reason, scrubbing off at least .05 and about 20mph. Saturday, when most everyone else was recording .980-.990 60-foots, Glenn was in the 1-teens in both sessions. He trapped at 209 and some change but the ETs were 6.61 and 6.77. So while I could be wrong and usually am, I'm calling DIVE. Not that it's any big surprise - all the teams do the same thing when one driver is in contention for the championship during the Countdown. Example, Billy Torrence, who simply decided not to show up for Dallas and risk knocking out Steve.

It's very possible to kill ET and still run MPH. Adjusting the air pressure in the tires are a way to do it. Give it just enough slip to kill a little ET but MPH will still be there. We use to do that when trying to set the MPH record and not the ET record. This was in stockers that is.

I just don't see trying to strategically qualify in order to pair up with someone you're in contention with early, the same as "diving". It's just a strategy that is hard to execute, because to qualify in a certain spot is truly a moving target. If you're purposely trying to race somebody in the first round, that's kind of the opposite of a dive isn't it? Either way, IMO it's apples and oranges. Also, I don't think Julie didn't qualify because she was trying to land in a particular spot. Again, JMO.

I agree with your comments Brad. I used to see it all the time and honestly, I think it shows confidence in a racers ability to handle their own business.

Jockeying for position is just what you're saying it is - strategy and difficult strategy at that. Purposely redlighting, adjusting the setup to blow the tires off at the hit or shutting down 200 feet before the stripe is a dive. I understand it but it does leave somewhat of a bad taste in your mouth.

Seems like a decent strategy, kind of like a hail mary pass, odds are it won't work but you have to try. Although in that 4th session you'd be better off making the show, in order to hopefully match up during eliminations that go all or nothing and miss as they did

I asked Greg during the fanfest on Thursday prior to the Fallnationals if he was going to push the clutch in early during qualifying and he said “I‘m not going to”. I wondered who was going to.

I’m sorry, but at 160 or whatever points in the lead the time for games is well and truly in the past. EE has simply been too strong all year and nothing can stop her.
