Just curious how this all works, does anyone know maybe from past expierence maybe working with a team in the past or currently,do your average crewmembers stay in a hole in the wall hotels and if so does the driver/teamowner or crew chief stay in the same place or do they get the hilton?? this goes for a low funded team and a well funded team, just being curious how the life of a crew member is on the road

My guess would be that it all depends on what is available. In Las Vegas some teams cut a single race sponsorship for discounted rooms judging by the number of cars that have a Hotel Casino sticker on them. When you consider the number of people that come to a town with team lodging can be a very large expense to an owner. I would think that since the dates a known way ahead of time they must try to cut a deal with a Hotel chain.
But what do I know? :)

We have an on a budget top fuel team, and it may sound crazy but we stick about 12 people in two rooms. I have an awesome group of volunteers that work there butts off, and then sleep 6 to a room. It makes for some interesting nights especially when it is like 3 A.M. and I set off a stink bomb!!
We really have a lot of fun and try and keep it real.

Bobby,

You are so right...Very few, maybe a handful of teams sleep two to a room...When I did clutch maintenance on a flopper we'd get two rooms and stuff as many as possible in there and if I bought my own room thinking I'd have a night to myself the word get out and Tommy Johnson Sr and wife or Jack Wyatt's crew, etc, etc find out and piggy back onto the floor and it always sucked...getting a good night sleep was impossible but that's the price you pay for crewing on a fuel car..
Most crewmembers don't say it out-loud but the job on the top-shelf cars are over-rated but what else can you do in life when your resume says 'car chief or top end specialist' in the real working world...Most employers are not impressed w/ a fuel car mechanic...
You keep on touring and miss important life events while hanging out w/ a bunch of gear-heads...
'Gets real old real fast'......

Oneday when I get enough money to build up a funny car and go racing , I am going to buy a bus that can tow a trailer and I will set-up the bus as some sort of traveling party bus where everyone can hang out and stay and I will give it a cool name and paintjob and have a chair on the roof lol

Most of the Corprate-backed teams sleep 2 to a room, and everyone on the team stays at the same hotel unless a member has their own motorhome.

When I worked for Wyatt, we were even 2 to a room, but every once in a while the 3 of us (Jack, another crew guy, and I) that traveled in the rig would share a single room.

It was never too bad for me, as I was always dead tired by the end of the day, so I would sleep like a rock! :D

Life on the road in the 3 ring circus of the NHRA is for a certain type of person. It looks fun and all from the ropes, but it's hardly that when you are the monkey behind them! :p Don't get me wrong, I had a blast when out there but the traveling and long hours wears on ya.

Would I go back? Probably, given the right circumstances. Am I actively seeking to go back? No, I prefer to sit at home and watch for now! :)

In my Pro Mod days a few years ago, the single most commonly uttered question is: "How full is the grey water tank?"

In my crewing experience, no one really gives a crap where they sleep. Just whether or not you can take a real shower. I've taken many a "Pit Shower" with a gallon of water and a bottle of Dawn. Sucks.

From the hotel side. I was able to do a one race sponsorship with some teams and the driver sometimes had his own room sometimes not depending on whether or not his family was traveling with them. I was able some other times to comp only the drivers room. I always did what I could for the teams as I know the expense that these teams incur. The thing the the hotels have to realize is that if you comp a few rooms for some of these guys, #1 they will stay there again if they liked it. And these teams also spend a lot of money within the hotel such as restuarants and bars. Sometimes more than the room revenue. I only wish that I was able to do more

Most of the teams I know of are two per room.

We're usually 2 per room, but sometimes 3 pending on the hotel or $$$.
We try our best to give our guys a decent place to sleep. We feel like it makes them more focused at the track.

We all stay at the same hotel.

I've seen at some hotels where everyone from Don Shoe or Connie down was staying at the same Hotel.

I would assume most of the crew chiefs and owners have their own room.

Never had to do the 3 or more to a room trick.Been lucky I guess.
Although putting the bottom end guy and the clutch guy in the same room makes for one nasty ring in the tub!!!

When I worked for Darrell Gwynn in 1985 we had 4 to a room, which was ok..
then in 1987 when we got the bud deal it was 2 to a room. Our last deal with the yankees it was 2 to the room, but we stayed at the nicer hotels..

Hi Tony, hope everything is going well. When I visited at a race it was 3 to a room (I made Gary sleep on the floor). I thought of the Bud/ Coors days when I saw that photo of all the beer cans in a room.

Hey Dave long time !!! In our poor days it was tight, but Gary, Nick and the rest of us didn`t complain to much because we were kicking some serious butt and Coors was great to us....
