Hight's FC body goes into the stands...was anybody hurt?

A teather to the rear of the body tree work from the rear tree of the chassis will keep the majority of the body from getting nearly high enough to travel into the stands...

I think in most cases, the tree would be torn out of the body faster then you could say "Holy Sh!t"!!! :D

Last year at the finals, the tree on Todd Lesenko/Jim Dunn's car didn't even go with the body.

Bodies have been launched higher then that.

I am not sure who has the current altitude record. I think Dave "Nasty" Benjamin.

Getting rid of FCs is certainly not the answer. How about getting rid of the bodies? Let's put '23Ts, Bantams, and Fiat bodies on them along with TF wings and run 'em as AA/FA transformers. Even with wings they will become very unpredictable from a driving standpoint, but, no 200+ lb. bodies to launch.

The teather can be a break away style so it will at least slow the body down and lessen the altitude. The majority of the time the body is torn up pretty well...still a better alternative to injuried by-standers. Or come up with some more balistic blankets for the engine area as Johnny Gray's team did. Even consider other "blow hatches" on the body to direct the blast down ward and out ward instead of upward. Just some thoughts....

It must be Monday...we want to tether ther burning funny car body to the chassis? - that one might need a driver vote...

There was a significant crosswind...looks like new track's spectator seating will be even further from the action.

Tethering the body might possibly work but it would definitely interfere with chute deployment. I think directing the blast from under the body would work the best. If that's even possible.

Or eliminate the blower. Nah...that won't work.

the reason bodies are flying off is the way teams are mounting them now a days! years ago the tubing tied the front latch to the hood and went back to the tubing in front of the motor. . a few years ago the teams quit tying the tubing together. the front latch tubing is completely separate from the tubing infront of the motor. this was done to get the body to flex which is why you see the front lips dragging the track as it comes up on the finish line. BUT the result is now when the burst panel blows and splits the hood to the fenders , there is no latch to hold the hood and back of the body down! that's why the noses stay attached with the latch in tact and the back flies off.... look at pics of Height's , Grey's , Beckman's or Hagan's and they all have the nose still on it while the rest of the body blows off!

"The NHRA released a statement after the incident stating that the Mustang carbon fiber body landed in a walkway in front of the eastside grandstand. As a precaution two fans were evaluated and released by paramedics on-site."

NHRA and JFR dodged another one.

Pisses you off huh?

A teather at the rear of the body would have what to do with it being on fire? If it doesn't come off at the front of the chassis, the teather wouldn't be needed and a fire would still be a fire with the body still attached. Depending on the teather length, it may or may not interfer with the chutes. I'm sure there will be other ideas out there...just my 2 cents.

Or, they could just ignore it and wait...drivers can vote on that too.

I like Bruce's explanation above, maybe going back to the way they were mounted, as he is suggesting, could have a big impact.

Absolutely...with all the punctured tanks there should be a long look at all mounting aspects of the bodies.

There was a feature on this weekends TV coverage about Johnny Gray's flopper ... they put a titanium plate over the fuel tank and added to and rearranged the tree under the body to strengthen it in the middle to hopefully prevent it from splitting.
