Four-Wide It still stinks

I actually have it on my "bucket list". I think it is different and a must see (in person) and feel event. Apparently not for everyone but that is cool. When I finally get to go, it shouldn't be too crowded..........:D

My only beef is with 3 rounds for each class, the show could be condensed into 2 hours much more easily than a regular broadcast. That would've made TV time more enjoyable to me.

Now let's flip the coin onto the sportsman racing haters (not me- I love sportsman racing) . Wouldn't it be nice to see them whittled down much quicker using all 4 lanes?

Terrible to watch, too much going on, too much to process, too much to interpret.

I agree.

If a car has a problem my attention would be drawn to that car and I would miss 75% of the race. And why wasn't the reaction times posted?

As far as Houston is concerned, one big oil down or crash and the scheduling is trashed. Wonder what ESPN2 has scheduled to play immediately after the live Houston race?

Live? Big deal. I can wait a few extra hours for the broadcast.

My two cents... I haven't watched a minute of the races until this weekend (to be honest I only watched about an hour of it this weekend). But the only reason I watched an hour of it this weekend was because it was 4 wide. It's different. I might even watch the whole event if they brought back the dragsters vs funnycars.

I guess being pretty hardcore about the drags for 10 years or so (from 1996-2006) and a pretty avid fan for 5 years (2006-2011) I guess my interest is just waining - I guess me personally I can only watch two nitro cars go down the track so many times before it gets boring.

I still look forward to Brainerd come August, in fact I just reserved my seats. Only going for 2 days though (maybe even just 1) due to various non racing related factors.

I went saturday... sat thru one round.. and only one pair of the second one.... costs $5 more than the fall race now... and no general admission... will go back in the Fall to watch "drag racing".. but wont go again to the 4 Wide deal....

on tv its alright... you can always switch over to Duck Dynasty and be entertained....lol..

When it first came out, I liked the thought of it. Even did a marathon drive down from Michigan to see the first year when they did an exhibition. The feel and sound was awesome but to watch it stunk. We all looked around not sure what happened, who won or anything. Close your eyes because it's not about seeing, just feeling.

After not being impressed live, I decided to watch on TV the next year and still didn't like it and haven't see anything to change my mind yet. I'm watching it as I type now and the TV has improved the coverage over the first year but still not enough to make it worth it to me.

As I've said before, I love football, but I don't want to see four teams playing at once.

For a goofy non points race sure, but after seeing it live and on TV it does nothing for me. With that said, if they keep it to one race a year then I don't care.

I would like to see four jets at once, just to feel it.

My favorite is that because Robert Hight (#16 in Funny Car) advanced, and Eddie Krawiec (#16 in PS Motorcycle) advanced there is something wrong with it.

After all how could two lowly # 16 qualifiers ever be expected to get out of round 1?

Especially those two, REALLY?????

Alan

I guess that I'm just a purist. In my old fashioned ways, if #16 advances, #1 should be on the trailer.

And I not so stupid as to think that there is no way that a #16 could beat a #1.

I agree with most of what you said,PJ. The one thing that I would like to see on tv is the reaction times.

E.G. I too missed the RT's but there is only so much time before the next quad burnouts. Over all I think the TV coverage was great. I like it live, and on TV.
Can't wait till Mr. Smith puts in the other two lanes in Vegas. :p

I've been a drag racing fanatic since the old "ABC's Wide World of Sports" shows back when you had to sit through figure skating just to watch some gawd-only-knows-how-old drag racing. I used to spend every race Sunday at my girlfriend's (now wife) making her whole family be quiet while I hogged their TV because they had satellite TV and got TNN's "American Sports Cavalcade" that showed all the Diamond P coverage. I do my best to make it to Sears Point to see the Autolite Nationals every summer, I get there when the track opens and don't leave until every single car has run. But the four-wide stuff just isn't the same in any way for me. Yesterday my DVR quit before the T/F final round and I didn't even care enough to get mad about it. Everyone likes something different, but to me it's no different than having four boxers in the ring at once, it might seem like fun on paper, but it's not for me.

This type of racing really puts an emphasise on the driver's abilities, the reaction times are one of the most important part of it, along with staging without being distracted. They should definitely show them.

The facility is really great. I only got to see 1 pass from the shut down area. It was weird and cool seeing 4 top fuel cars coming down the track.

I wish the win lights would be reconfigured when the 2-Wides are run at the 4-Wides. Gets confusing

My kids and I were there, I enjoyed it (not as much as I enjoy regular old 2 wide though) and my kids both loved it; my oldest has been there for each of the 4 wides and can't wait to go back.

It's just one time a year folks, it's not the death of drag racing, so let's not get too hyperbolic about it. At least this year the oh-so-predictable cry of "4 wide sucks" didn't start in earnest until the time the event started.

One thing that was nice about this weekend....we got to see a LOT of different divisions race. TAD was particularly enjoyable.

I have been in love with NHRA racing since I was 6 years old. I'm working on passing on the passion to my 9 year old. He has been getting the bug, but after watching this 4-wide I could tell he was not interested. We say no more!!

I have covered the four-wide every year since it started, and really didn't like it until I had the opportunity to watch a round from the grandstands about 800 feet down. I spent all day Sunday until the finals in the S section and enjoyed it. on the starting line stinks, in the press room stinks but at the 800 feet mark, I love it.

But, then again, I must be a non-purist because I enjoy eighth-mile and 1,000 foot drag racing too.

With all the pom-pom waving and pyramid stacking the TV coverage did trying to let us know how much everyone LOVES it, it tells me NHRA has their eye on Bruton Smith to see if he's pouting or grinning. He sure got his gawd awful sunglasses in a bunch when the drivers didn't speak too well of it the first year. Now, they (the drivers etc) just bite their lips as someone hands them a pom-pom.
