ESPN coverage back to old tricks

It's not officially Summer when they run the event in Englishtown either

That's apples to oranges. As far as I can recall it's been the Supernationals to me. It's not advertised as the summernationals race and just because it was in the past, means absolutely nothing in relation to officially advertising topeka as a summer race.If your going to market a race you cant call it a season it's not. The Winternationals are not held in the fall or the spring. Every time I saw the name of the race it just seemed like a major contradiction to me. Who failed the marketing test at the NHRA?

Yea it's not that big a deal, but it makes who's ever responsible look stupid. Also, just because you have summer like conditions does not make it a summer race. If that was the case the we should be calling the Houston race the summernationals and not the spring nationals. If it talks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a cow, it's just not a duck and can't be called a one.

Paul needs to get better on some of his commentating. I should not know that Paul's favorite driver in the entire world is JR Todd. He should not be disclosing any favorites. Paul is a commentator and a commentator should be excited about everyone, not just who they personally like or act like an underfunded team has absolutely no shot at winning a round. I don't care if # 1 qualified with a 3.75 and # 16 qualified with a 4.10, when they meet first round Paul needs to act like #16 actually has a shot instead of counting them out from the start. Like many comments he has made in the past about some teams.

lol....like the guy who says "mornin'" to you three or four times in the same morning...this is the second race that JR is at, and he still says "it's great to have JR back" more than a few times....I'll try to count next race....I've never been a Paul fan....Gary Gerould needs to be in the booth with Mike, as he's much more intuitive and knows so much more about racing than Paul does, but it's a political thing....both have been involved in televised drag racing for a very long time on and off, one happened to retain the knowledge, the other just does a drunk Ed McMahon impression...

of course, it's easy to gauge as we've been lucky to have two of the finest motorsports commentators bring this sport into TV land...Steve Evans and Dave McClelland....we got spoiled early on...

Well your book is due out summer 2012 and they just ran the summer nationals. Where's the book? :D:D

Bad example Mr. Keenan. The Springnationals here is spring weather. It was only high 80's. In the summer it will be 95 plus every single day and over 100 some days.

Martin, ESPN can do as they please. They've gone to far down the JFR yellow brick road to turn around. all I car about is racing. the cars on the track. round wins. round losses. I am not going to allow ESPN to determine whether I enjoy or waver from my favorite form of Motorsport. brother. they can set of Paul and Dunn in the Castrol Tech Center to call the race for all i care.

Ohhhh mannn.....now you went and did it. Thanks to you, we will be seeing Ashley doing cat grooming tips, Courtney giving Connie K. a make over and El Jeffe busting out his I Love Castrol scat album.

Oh boy.

Well, like my father used to always say about the E-town event - Summernationals......and some aren't.:D

From what I hear about the old summer date you would sweat all day long and be drenched.

And have 50 weight on your arms from helping a nitro crew dump an oil tray, and mustard on your shirt from the best overcooked hotdog you've ever eaten and you stank from the smell of tire smoke from the 800 foot burnouts and your ears didn't stop ringing until you were home in your bed from the 95 percent dry hops.

Yeah- those days sucked... ;)

Wow. I had no idea I was so miserable. ;)

Contrary to what some others here have said, I actually thought it was a pretty good show. They got through the first rounds with no interviews or fluff, and the rest of the show was pretty good. I was interested in that device Robert Hight came up with.

Anyone else find it funny and odd that this race is called the SummerNationals when it's not even the summer yet. It's not the right marketing.

Not saying it's right or wrong, just sharing what I think the thought process was behind the naming of the event. When they revamped the schedule a few years back and renamed the event it was on Memorial Day Weekend. And as long as I can remember Memorial Day has been considered the "Unofficial" beginning of summer, hence the Summernationals.

I can buy that. I also find it a great idea that the NHRA does not even compete with the indy 500 or the coke 600. The tv ratings and perhaps event attendance would be scary to look at.

Agreed. How NHRA would even consider an event on that weekend, UNLESS they went "big" and made it a 32 car/ million dollar pro show, would look like amatur hour compared to running against those two events.

And let's not even start about the TV time...
