My 4th or 5th thought after hearing this news (after being saddened for the spectators and Antron) was that this would bring out the morons and know-it-alls on the 'Mater ... there isn't any "official" news yet and some of you haven't disappointed.
If some of you actually believe the nonsense you posted (and the ones surely to follow with ridiculous posts), then I am sad for you too.
This is indeed a tragedy, but it is quite clear from the post on here that there are some folks who should find a different sport to be fans of.
I think its time for NHRA to look into wheel tethers, they have them in almost every other form of motor sport and it would be easier to them on these cars becase we don't have to make 14 second pit stops. We don't need something happening like happened to the IRL back in 99 to have it come to pass. Hopefully everyone's okay and they take a look at what happened and solve it.

Antron is a friend. Glad he is OK.
i understand where you are coming from but will this put the drivers of the cars in a bad decision say they get up into the fence? Its a catch 22.
I agree something needs to be done but, I would be afraid that catch fences wouldn't be strong engough to hold something with the mass and speed of a rear tire. They have more mass and spin at much higher rpms than nascar or irl tires. Also, if they could build one that was strong enough to hold it in, I would be afraid it would turn the tire into a 300 mph pinball and that would increase the chances of driver injuries..
Thanks, I'll take your advice and step out of this now.No, why don't all those who worry about every little thing stay home.
just how do you tether a wheel?nascar and the IRL tether the control arms and spindles on the front. not the wheel. the IRL incident had the control arms and spindle still attached and when the car hit the wall it ripped everything off that the wheel & tire was attached to. think about it!
sometimes it's only God who is in control.
Well in theory you could tether it through the hollow live axel to the other wheel.
My apologies for posting that the spectator died. My brother and sister in law were there and saw the incident and a friend of mine was in the pits. I know these people and when they tell me they stopped working on a body and cover it, I take their word on it.

Were just lucky this is the only time something like this has happened with an errant wheel
