Antron OK after round 1 accident

My apologies for posting that the spectator died. My brother and sister in law were there and saw the incident and a friend of mine was in the pits. I know these people and when they tell me they stopped working on a body and cover it, I take their word on it.
It really bothers me that people are so quick to jump on the Safety Safari and the NHRA for the "Dedicated to Safety pledge". Do you guys realize how many people the Safari and NHRA have SAVED?! The people who are living, breathing, walking etc?! To bash them for a situation in which they have no control is ridiculous. They control what they can, but there are things that are out of their control, the drivers control, the track owners control, sometimes it's only God who is in control.

just how do you tether a wheel?
nascar and the IRL tether the control arms and spindles on the front. not the wheel. the IRL incident had the control arms and spindle still attached and when the car hit the wall it ripped everything off that the wheel & tire was attached to. think about it!jay and randy are right on in this thread (as are a few others)... there are several others that absolutely need to take jay's advice and find a new sport to be a fan of and probably a hobby (and quite possibly some medication to level them out)
this is a terrible terrible accident. no one... not antron, NHRA, DSR, you or me... not one wants an event lik this to happen
i can attest as can randy... it takes an incredible effort to put one of these cars down the track. and much of that effort is simply to make sure we do it as safely as possible. i as a driver don't wanna get hurt. i don't want my equipment hurt, i don't want a competitor hurt and i don't want any fan or spectator hurt
these machines are inherently volatile and unfortunately today that was proven all too true
my heart goes out to the family and friends of the lady who lost her life. undoubtedly today will change their lives forever
my heart also goes out to antron... god help him deal with the guilt that will no doubt accompany him and the feelings he will have for being a unknowing role in this tragic series of events that ended in the loss of an innocent life. that is a burden that can be devastating and haunting... trust me i have been there

Go look at the pictures Brent linked to. Look at 6-12, and imagine a fence, 30' high, placed at, or right in front of the puddled water. Right behind safety and photogs spot.
Track owners all over the country just crapped their pants.
Drag racing is the only major motorsport that races on tracks that don't require them at every race. At much higher speeds.
Told you, it wouldn't be a popular comment, and I sure don't like the idea one bit. Insurance companies are going to drive this.

We better all stop going to the races and watch them on tv.
While we are at it, better not go to a Hockey game. The puck you know.
Baseball while we are at it. How many times does that ball fly into the stands at 100+mph.
Heck basketball too. Never know when a player may get pissed off and come into the stands after you yell something stupid to him.
Lets all just sit home and never leave the house.

Well in theory you could tether it through the hollow live axel to the other wheel.

It was an ACCIDENT.
Stuff happens. It is very, very sad. But, the reality is, stuff happens.
This was no fault of the NHRA. They cannot possibly anticipate any ACCIDENT. They cannot possibly forecast every type of action that might result from an explosion, crash or combination of the two. If the NHRA has the ability to prevent catastrophe, then they are in the wrong business, because catastrophic things happen every day. The only thing the NHRA can do, is the same thing the FAA and any organization does, do their best to keep the damage to a minimum when an ACCIDENT does occur. This was not negligence, it was an ACCIDENT.
When I was a kid, I was at an AHRA event in Tulsa. Somebodies Top Fuel engine exploded (might have been Marvin Graham's) and a guy not far from me nearly got his leg sheared off by the shrapnel. I looked over and saw this guy bleeding profusely. I don't know what ever happened to him, but I know I spent the next many times at the track peeking out from behind the adults around me. It scared the crap out of me. Never, ever stopped me from going to the races though. Neither would this.
Tragic ACCIDENT. That's what this was. Nothing more, nothing less. I feel bad for that woman's family.

Jenn there is no need for you to apologize. Your family was there & saw the awful accident & told you what they saw, it's not like you made anything up.

Dixon's Memphis wreck...he lost a front wheel that took off like a frizbee....just missed being a similar accident as todays.
