I was waiting to see it before I made any judgement--didn't like it. Too much to miss when things went well-too much to see when 3 of 4 cars dont make it down track.

I was there for the exhibition last year and the sounds was amazing...watching it, well you missed a bunch.

Watching the coverage TV, the main thing I noticed was that I was no longer "right there". In order to get all four racers in the picture the camera angle needs to be so wide and so far away that I felt we were back in sports coverage of 30 years ago. Beyond just not being able to see the detail of any car, it was impossible to watch what happened everywhere. If I'm not at the race I want to be able to feel as close to there as I can, with 2 cars I can get close enough to make me happy. With this, I felt as if I grabbed bionoculars I could have been closer from here in Michigan then they gave me on the coverage.

It seems we also lose some angles of coverage as well. Normally we would have seen the Hagan deal from both sides of the track, despite seeing the replay a good 15 times. Sadly though I wonder if what happened there is the attention they want. Not saying they want people to wreck but 2 funny cars blowing the bodies off seem to get one giant push.

I love me some football but don't want to see 4 teams go at once. So far this 4 wide is a sounds only deal. It is impressively loud and powerful but after watching a few runs its old news. Have to see what tomorrow's race brings. I do want to see someone get beaten by two or even three holeshots

I'm with you George, Dumbest gimmick I have ever heard of. Somebody has called it Fourplay that sounds right. It's hard enough to really see what happening with 2 cars, how the hell can a person keep an eye on four?
Was great with booked in shows at Rockford but those were NOT real races, and cars ran mid 6's 200 MPH.
What's next having a guy ride on top of the wing?

After seeing it on TV today my thoughts are still the same. It's bull S. How many times did they have to do a replay of the runs? The show took just as long as the normal qualifying shows.

We can only hope its a passing fad and will fade from sight.[/QUOTE]

^^Man I hope so
anybody who thinks this is a good idea should choke themselves.
Drag Racing Fan

For the 1st time since 1987, I turned off the races as I was watching them. Shutting of NHRA has been unheard of for me. I usually can't take my eyes off the races or even qualifying.
WAY too much going on in the 4 wide. Not enough good shots of the cars & crews. Bad camera coverage as the race commences as well.

Hope it's a fad & passes like bad gas.

Since everyone has an opinion on this here's my two cents.

I have a hard enought time watching one car cover 1000' in under four seconds. Somehow I feel if I was at this event I'd be missing 75% of the action instead of my normal 50%. I'm sure I would prefer 15 races per class bracket to 7.

I think this is much better suited for tv where they can have a camera on every car and show replays ad nauseum.

Also it appears the stands are very far back from the actual racing surface. Not so sure I'd be crazy about watching (with my old eyes) my favorite from four lanes away either.

Personally I found matching the Top Fueler against Funny Cars much more interesting. Drag racing was already maxed out on excitement as far as I'm concerned

I just thought of something carefull everyone. I hate the 4-wide thing but obviously some like it some dont. How about keep the racing 2 wide and how it should be. But if you really want to keep 4-wide then make it a special one off round where the winner would get a bonus or something. What I mean is keep the racing normal but have a special shootout or something to please the 4-wide fans.

Ladies and Gents:

I so wanted to start a new thread , but alas I did not!!!!

DAMN!!!!

To me, ???, this 4 wide thing is kind of like sex with twins. (or the girls from PHX :) ), it just doesn't last as long as you think it will.

Come on, just look at the runs per reg. event vs. per 4 wide deal.

Dear, Bruton, are you cuttin' my ticket in half??????????

It's all gimmick!!! That's all!! Substance????

Hell no!

Substance? Well that's knowing your fav driver qualified No. 2 but still faces a tuff Jim Head at No. 15! And all you can think about in Sunday School is that ACE takes care of business in Round 1 because you know that Force / Hight/ Force-Hood is going to get by round 1.

Half the racing vs. Half the price? Bruton care to elaborate??

I was at the NASCAR "The Winston" in 1987, "70 laps of Dynamite with a 10-lap fuse" Earnhardt thru the grass! Awesome!!!!

You just don't have time to comphrend what the HELL is going on, plus nobody is selling you brackets.

It's cool for sure, as an exhibition in ....duh.....British Columbia, Darlington, Fresno, or Antwerp!!!!

Having said this: Come on Blue and Yellow.....DODGE!!!!

I would love to see that in person someday. But, it's OK for once a year. We don't need it anywhere else on the tour though. Like it was said previously here, they should increase the purse or give out more points for winning this race. For the new or occaisional fans - and especially stock car fans..... trying to explain all the lights and pairings must be a nightmare. They'll never try to understand it. On TV they'll watch for header flames or blow ups; in person, they'll go for 1 day to smell the nitro, feel the shake & walk the pits. I can't see this enticing a whole new wave of fans.

i wont watch the finals, what a dog and pony show this is! they should put juggling clowns and guys on unicycles atthe top end! typical NHRA. i dont see nascar reconfiguring there length and race platform toget new fans. geesh!

Did anyone notice that Mister Smith said on the broadcast last night that they had the 'Go Ahead' for Vegas? Wonder if there is room at Indy, or Gainesville?

the "sport" with no personality, coming to a "TeeVee" near you.

Anytime you have to add gimmicks, You no longer can call it racing. Its "entertainment" like WWF wrestling. (or whatever acronym their calling it now) Watched it in person last year from the stands only because the rest of the crew went up there. Recorded it on cell phone video. Wasn't impressed. Guess all the homies with their import fart pipes, "Shore house" fans, "entertainment tonight" watchers are lovin it though. Call me an old fart malcontent, And with all your political correctness and dont upset the sponsors, "watch what you say" claptrap, You ruined the sport I had a passion for. You can have it kids, Just flush twice so i don't hafta smell it.

And people say I'm Harsh.

'don't knock it 'til you've seen it'... did forty plus years ago, while on a vacation. great as a booked in match race...

seems like when I was a pup, #1 ran #9, #2 ran #10, ect. When did we go to the 1/16 ladder? or was that just AHRA and independent races?

Did you read the part of my post where I not only seen it, I recorded it on my cell phone?

And I remember the old 1 vs 9 ladder. Bought the book and wore the shirt,

Al,
Sorry, didn't make myself clear, that was what people have been saying to me for the last 4 weeks or so in PM's and other places... Yes, I know How to read and was agreeing with you.

I sure hope Bruton was joking about turning Vegas into 4 lanes? Why F**k up a Great track?

I'm told they will not play the national anthem before eliminations for this event, Instead they will take a page from the Pappy Hart playbook and play steam calopy "Circus" music before the four wide starts:D
