It depends, if you want the whole "strip experience" New York, New York is a nice place and they have a pretty cool roller coaster, good food and it's not too big. It also has good freeway access. Off the strip, Aliante Station is the closest to the track, The Cannery is also close and many of the teams stay there. The Cannery East is down on Boulder Highway, it's got nice rooms according to a few people I know that have stayed there and they got a very good room rate. There are two words that you need to know if you are coming here: RENTAL CAR! Cab fare will drain your budget and the busses, well lets just say it will take you forever to get there. The Nellis Suites are just down Las Vegas Blvd but I know nothing about them other than some of the PSCA racers stay there. Keep in mind that I live here so I have not stayed in very many Hotels here. Maybe some of the other Maters can make some recommendations based on past experiences. If you have any specific questions feel free to email or PM.

I've stayed on the strip (Palazzo, Venetian, Bally's, Tropicana, Excalibur, Stratosphere). Favorite is Venetian/Palazzo but way too spendy to pay for it. Fortunately, we've been comped there. Avoid the Tropicana at all costs. My wife went to Vegas while I went to Pomona (wish now I did what you did Tony, cancel and go somewhere else) and she stayed at NYNY. She didn't think it was anything special and simply said "glad I didn't pay for it". Downtown, our favorite is the Golden Nugget but you'll get some of the best deals at Main Street Station or Four Queens.
I would agree the nugget downtown is very nice but you could stay on the strip for less thatn what you would pay there. 10-4 on the Tropicana........dump. On one of my trips last year I stayed at the Hooters casino. I really liked it although a little far from the action.
Of all the hotels on that list that are still in existence, the ones that I'd never stay in again would be Circus Circus and Excalibur.
hehe, Circus Circus is like a ghetto Disneyland/world.
Well, after backing out of my Pomona trip about 20mins away from the airport. I've decided to go to Vegas.
This will be my first trip there. Any advice as to where I should stay? Hotels are pretty reasonable on and around The Strip, but what are the pros and cons?
