Well, after backing out of my Pomona trip about 20mins away from the airport. I've decided to go to Vegas.

This will be my first trip there. Any advice as to where I should stay? Hotels are pretty reasonable on and around The Strip, but what are the pros and cons?

the impression I got when we stayed there 13 years ago was that the hotels west of the railroad were cheaper. We stayed at the Gold Coast

Gold Coast Casino & Hotel Standard Rooms | GoldCoastCasino.com
looks like 57 bucks
https://reservations.coastcasinos.com/CGI-BIN/LANSAWEB?WEBEVENT+RB057B5765CF45800CD0501C+GC1+ENG

the cons are
saw this same hotel twice on tv crime shows
Once for a robbery caught on surveilance tape where they junped the booths and then escaped

another time some lady and her kid were sleeping in a camper in the parking lot while her boyfriend got drunk and ripped off somone for drugs in the casino. later that night The druggies got revenge and broke into the camper to murder the child, I think the woman was stabbed but survived.

It depends, if you want the whole "strip experience" New York, New York is a nice place and they have a pretty cool roller coaster, good food and it's not too big. It also has good freeway access. Off the strip, Aliante Station is the closest to the track, The Cannery is also close and many of the teams stay there. The Cannery East is down on Boulder Highway, it's got nice rooms according to a few people I know that have stayed there and they got a very good room rate. There are two words that you need to know if you are coming here: RENTAL CAR! Cab fare will drain your budget and the busses, well lets just say it will take you forever to get there. The Nellis Suites are just down Las Vegas Blvd but I know nothing about them other than some of the PSCA racers stay there. Keep in mind that I live here so I have not stayed in very many Hotels here. Maybe some of the other Maters can make some recommendations based on past experiences. If you have any specific questions feel free to email or PM.

You could ask 1000 people this question and get 1001 different responses. You just have to go,take a shot and learn for yourself. Now my opinion: I like the Imperial palace. Its right in the heart of the action: party/people/action/bars as far as im concerned. Rooms are Ok but how much time are you really in them? I have tried from the elite to the bottom of the barrel and the IP is what works for me. Downtown is good for access to the track but the night life isnt as good as the strip.

I've stayed on the strip (Palazzo, Venetian, Bally's, Tropicana, Excalibur, Stratosphere). Favorite is Venetian/Palazzo but way too spendy to pay for it. Fortunately, we've been comped there. Avoid the Tropicana at all costs. My wife went to Vegas while I went to Pomona (wish now I did what you did Tony, cancel and go somewhere else) and she stayed at NYNY. She didn't think it was anything special and simply said "glad I didn't pay for it". Downtown, our favorite is the Golden Nugget but you'll get some of the best deals at Main Street Station or Four Queens.

I would agree the nugget downtown is very nice but you could stay on the strip for less thatn what you would pay there. 10-4 on the Tropicana........dump. On one of my trips last year I stayed at the Hooters casino. I really liked it although a little far from the action.

Yeah, I've stayed at Hooters also and didn't think it was to bad for the price. When I was there I had to walk through the Tropicana just to see how run down it is (it's right next door to Hooters) and I was surprised just how bad it really was. When I was there last year the Trop was on the Las Vegas casino "death watch" list. I heard they were even bouncing employee pay checks! I think they've got their financial problems turned around now but it's still a major dump. My grandfather was business partners (not in the Tropicana, a different business) with one of the original owners of the Trop back when it was first built. I've heard all the stories of how it was "the place to be" back then but that certainly isn't the case today!

I'll second the vote for Imperial Palace. It's far from a 5 star resort but it's smack dab in the middle of the action and the price is right.... especially if you're on a budget. Also, be sure to check out the auto collection (car museum) at IP. It's like a high end car show that never ends and best of all, it's free!

I have a free round trip airline ticket that I need to use soon, after reading this thread I'm starting to think maybe I should plan a trip to Vegas too????? :D

I visit Vegas on a regular basis and ALWAYS stay at the Venetian, tried all the rest but always go back to the Venetian. Its very upscale and IMHO has the best steakhouse anywhere.Delmonicos call for reservations and go ...you wont be dissapointed.Keep in mind all of this luxury comes with a price.

Most of the hotels on the Strip are nice but getting around down there is a nightmare. I would advise staying off the Strip ... and avoid taking I-15, too, to get to the track so don't plan on staying at a hotel near the freeway. Traffic is pretty much always awful on I-15.

Me, I stay with friends, everybody offers a place to crash but I have a friend who lives pretty close to the track who has a spare bedroom who loves when we visit. Or so she claims. :D

My suggestion is to make friends with someone who lives in Vegas and stay with them. LOL.

I am going to the race in April in Vegas this year, damn it. Just need to buy my plane tickets and put in the vacation request.

I like downtown better because it is easier to get on the freeway and also because I go by myself and downtown is more user friendly when your alone

I've stayed at:
Aladdin (now Planet Hollywood)
AZ Charlie's Decatur
Ballys
Barbary Coast (now Bill's Gambling Hall)
Binion's Horseshoe
Boulder Station
Circus Circus
Excalibur
Four Queens
Gold Coast
Hacienda (long gone - Mandalay Bay occupies the property)
Las Vegas Club
Las Vegas Hilton
Orleans
Palms
Palace Station
Paris
Rio
Riviera
Sahara
San Remo (now Hooters)
Stardust (gone)
Stratosphere
Terrible's
Vacation Village (gone)
Westward Ho (gone)
....and a couple that slip my mind at the moment.

From that list, downtown I'd recommend the Four Queens. On the strip, the Riviera has been remodeling all of their rooms, really bringing the place up-to-date. Bally's, Paris and Planet Hollywood are all nice. Off-strip, the Palms is my favorite by a mile. It's my favorite Las Vegas casino resort, period. Of all the hotels on that list that are still in existence, the ones that I'd never stay in again would be Circus Circus and Excalibur.

What is it with Excalibur? A friend of mine had booked there for SEMA at the AC Delco Nats and changed to the Super8 after one night.
I stayed at the Plaza and it suited me fine, I was only ever in the room to sleep and did that well. It was nice that could I could see the Fremont St show start up from my wondow and rush down the elevator and be on the street to watch it in a minute. There seemed to always be lots of people there and Halloween was a hoot!

The bad part was I had to hit the parking lot before it filled up around 7pm or there'd be no place to park till midnight. That kept me from going to the strip (notThe Strip at LVMS !) in the evenings.

If money wasn't an object i'd stay at the Bellagio but booking Plaza online for $35 a night (weekly average) was OK.

I liked the 4 Queens, easy to get around to the strip and The Strip and in the heart of Fremont St action.
I stayed at Sam's Town on Boulder Hwy once and didn't have a rental car so I had to take the bus... didn't like that but the hotel itself was nice.

southpointcasino.com Opened 2005. Nice rooms, flat screen tv. reasonable rates. Nice casino. South Las Vegas Blvd. Off the beaten path. If you want to spend more money,Red Rock Casino and Resort gets my vote;)

The new Alliante Station is the closest to the track. It is about 8 miles on 215 west, you can see the track from 215 and Alliante. I know there was some negative feedback from the Div. 7 banquet, however it had just opened. I go there often and their Feast Buffet is better than the Bellagio. The next closest is the Cannery. It is west on Craig Road off 215. There is big time construction going on 15 so ANYTHING on the strip or south has to drive through it unless you take Las Vegas Blvd to the track. Lots of stoplights tho. BK

Dude!! I hope you only want the room so that you can shower before an after being at the track!

Vegas doesn't sleep mate, TEAR IT UP! :D
