I can confirm Steve's rig is being hauled out of state ... the pic below is on I-15 North (heading towards Vegas) between Barstow and Baker, California about 3PM this afternoon. Sorry for the pic quality ... I took the pic thru the windshield ... and I had to slow down to about 80 to get it.

Sorry for your bad luck Steve ... and it sounds like we will be sorry for more teams on Monday.

As an aside ... does NASCAR and IndyCar and ALMS get hassled like this by CalTrans/CHP?? I know Cali is broke and they need to raise revenues but come on.

I'm confused, over length and no permit? What happened and why only Torrance's rig? I can't imagine their's is much different than some others that come to mind immediately........

More of the same will happen next week when they all try to leave from what I understand. As long as they stay off the highway and on city streets, they'll be okay.;)

Speaking of irony, it's also my understanding that these regulations only apply to commercial vehicles and not RVs. So your Renegade Stacker can be 56' or longer providing that there is no advertisement on the side but stating "Not For Hire" your good to go.

This is not just a California thing, other states have their own DVM regulations too.

Kind of funny seeing it hauled away because it's too big by a trailer bigger than it.

I know, right?!

So now, the enviros have 2 diesel trucks instead of 1 going down the highway.
Also, this is just outright theft by the state. Go after the money, not the criminals.

Oh, and BTW, SteveO, as a Californian, I am embarrased. I hope you don't think we're all stupid. Many of us want to see you, your team, your car, and your sponsors at Pomona.

All the others got in under the radar so to speak, but they will have to leave Pomona the same way Steve's did (45+ trailers). From what I've read on the CFCB, the same trailers are illegal in Indiana, and now Indiana also knows.

This isn't new-right? I seem to remember Comp. Plus reporting about this kind of thing years back.
Anyone have anything on why Cal. rules are different-or why teams order their trailers knowing 3 times a year this will be an issue?

But notice that the trailer has a (hard to see) "oversize load" sign on it. Maybe even a pilot car.

So, can't the teams simply apply for (and pay for) an oversize load permit?

I don't know. I tried to understand this:

Vehicle Lengths

... and just got totally confused. It seems to imply that you're OK if you stay on the major highways.

Would someone PLEASE explain to me what this issue & thread is all about? I'm so confused.

Nick,

Steve Torrence got pulled up on his way to Pomona for his trailer length being against California laws and was turned around as he didn't want to pay the fine and was only using Pomona as a test bed for next season and figured it wasn't worth the hassle. His trailer was towed out of the state and he will not be racing in Pomona this weekend, which sucks!

I tried my best to clarify this in its entirety, exactly what has taken place and why myself and team are not competing this weekend.

APPARENTLY SOMEONE DIDNT LIKE MY RESPONSE AND DELETED IT...

As we were all aware of, many trailers including mine are not in compliance with the laws of california because of length. I called CalTrans last week in efforts of obtaining a permit to avoid any problems with this issue and was notified that there "IS NOT and WILL NOT" be a permit given.

We were stopped at the scales, pulled over and inspected. This is where our trailer was measured and entire rig taken out of service and deemed illegal. Through many conversations and with CalTrans I was told that the only way that my trailer was allowed to leave the weigh station would be by hauling it out on on a lowboy trailer. There suggestion was to hire a crane company to come out, lift the trailer and load it to haul. But under no circumstance would we be able to move the trailer. Not even to get it to a better location for loading.

Through much help from a few other race teams, I was able to contact someone who had a stretch trailer that would be long and low enough to back our trailer onto. Unfortunately by the time we were able to get everything taken care of, we would not have enough time to make it to the track for qualifying.

I have no issue with paying a fine or buying any type of permit that would eliminate this problem. Being that we are in no type of points chase and using the last few races of this season as testing for next year. I made the decision that hauling my trailer "on a trailer" in and out of the state of california was not feasible nor something I wanted to do.

Steve Torrence
