thats awful news, this team will get through this and come back stronger than ever just like all year!

Not to worry Jeff...the backup stuff at their shop is still probably quicker than anything else in the class...except a couple Johnson HEMI's I'm pretty proud of...;)

My money is on Greg & Jason showing up at Pomona and putting both Poncho's in the top half of the qualifying field.

WoW! Talk about "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat!"

Material things can be replaced, I'm just glad that no one was physically hurt.

Plus, I'm not so sure that will be Pontiac's last championship car.

I know the Solstice is a popular car in SCCA, so it is possible for someone driving one of those cars to win a championship for years to come, but I would stop short of calling it a major championship. It is also possible for Mike Edwards to come back next year and win in a Pontiac I suppose.

I do not know of any other top flight series that Pontiac supports/supported this year. So, as far as Pontiac being an active brand, this championship was it for them.

I have heard that the Summit team is going bowtie racing next year ... granted they will likely be the same chassis re-skinned, but it is still a brand change.

Kinda strange that article said the "overturned" rig, and yet Greg makes no reference to that. Only the fire. Must be a typo by the reporter, which I guess is good news for a change!

Just happy to hear no one was injuried or burned.

I wasn't referring to the Solstice. Look at how many Pro Stock teams ran the GXP, plus the car is still NHRA legal for another 5 yrs.

;)

Cheryl, that should have been the agony of deheat.;)

He's here all week, folks. Try the veal. :D

I re-read your posts; and, I admit, I don't understand why you're so concerned about a race car that is already burnt to a crisp.

For the same reason we'd be concerned if another historically significant race car was destroyed? Greg's GXP isn't Swamp Rat VI but it was an interesting piece of GM & NHRA history.

Call me crazy, but after losing a house and a complete race setup to fire, I wouldn't want it painted anywhere on my car. I'd have it painted to look like a big ice cube or something. No flames!

The season just ended, how can you attach historically significant rights to a car that was probably going to be used again next year? It's way too early to look back on that car and find a spot for it in NHRA history. It's not like the GXP was going directly into NHRA's museum. Greg's 2004 Grand Am was way more significant. The GXP was a good car, obviously, but it didn't exactly dominate like the '04 Grand Am did.

Let me explain my position on Greg's car 1 more time:

It was the LAST factory-backed/supported Pontiac to win a championship in Pontiac's last year as a manufacturer in any major series. PERIOD.

Could a Pontiac win Pro Stock next year? YES. Would it be a factoy-backed car? NO. Factory-backed cars will all be bowties in '11.

Would Greg's GXP likely have raced next year? YES. But it was going to be re-skinned as a Chevy.

I am not saying the car is going to be worth eleventy kajillion dollars someday, I am just saying when someone flips to the last page of Pontiac history as an active manufacturer, there will be Greg's car. There is a certain cache' to that ...

What about Oldsmobile? ;)

GM/Pontiac/Chevy did not support any NHRA driver this year, they dropped everything in mid 2009

BLACK: GM LETTER NO SURPRISE

From another site, some details:

Here are some quick facts about what happened. The truck driver and his wife took Ken Black back to Vegas in his specially equipped RV (medical requirements) along with the Trailblazer used by the team for transport at a race so they could get back to Pomona. When they returned to Pomona they loaded the Trailblazer in the rig, closed it all up and headed for Charlotte. They were on I-10 about 20 minutes out when they saw smoke coming from the trailer. There are a lot of details from there but the bottom line is everything in the trailer was a complete loss. The heat melted the body off of Greg's championship car, completely melted 4 spare engines ,etc, etc, etc. They could not get the rear door open on the trailer as the heat basically melted it all together. They cut the top off of the trailer and used a crane to lift the car and stuff out. Greg found out when he landed in Charlotte. There were very strong indicators that something in the Trailblazer shorted out and started the fire. These are facts. No conspiracy. Just terrible luck after working their butts off all year to take the title. Greg and Jason have their own rigs; nothing from the rig hauling Jason's stuff was involved. Yes, I know them personally.
