While working as a starter at MDIR I was wiping up a spot of H2O after a Top ET dragster did his burnout and he almost backed over me because I lost focus for just long enough. My friend working the water box screamed at me over the radio and probably saved my life. Happened so fast I didn't even get scared until I was reflecting on it on the ride home after the race and I realized just how close it was.

In early 81 I was standing in the burnout tracks as a rookie driver backed up (TAD). Once he stopped I moved to the side; a second later the car came by me. He did a dry hop in reverse. Nobody got hurt, but it scared hell out of me.
Was that at OCIR?
I remember seeing an incident like that around that time and how Larry Sutton got him calmed down, doing another dry hit or 2 to clean all the rocks off the tires from behind the burnout box, then getting the run in.
Don't remember the driver... That is about the limit of my memory...

Cruz did it in the finals at indy in 2004....tony did it in qualifying in 2005...i was the body man on cruzers so I remember it well...i wouldnt say cody was unscathed..i believe he broke a couple ribs at minimum...I bounced of the hood and rolled down the track...and yes the clearance for the injector opening was the issue both times

No Jeff, it was at Atlanta Dragway at a Division 2 WCS meet. Since it was his first round of competition I played it safe. He settled down by the next week (Gatornationals) and qualified in the top half of the field.

Well... I guess that was not the only time...
