I did a little research last night, and I need somebody who's team has played Auburn to help me get over the nagging feeling that they have the potential to kick the crap out of the good ol' Huskers?

Hey Terry! I would be scared if Texas was playing them... then again at this point in Texas' season, I would be scared to play div 1-AA teams:p Our "former" defensive coordinator Gene Chizsic was at Auburn before Texas and he left "undefeated". So Auburn will be tough, but I'm pulling for the Huskers regardless!!!
Hook em Horns!!! Go Huskers!!!

Thanks for the good karma, Tim! I'm a little worried about Auburn, but with the 'Horns AND the Buckeyes pulling for us, I think we gotta fighting chance. Go Huskers! Hook em Horns!

On Florida leaping frogging Michigan in the polls: Remember when Michigan went from 11th to 6th after beating Notre Dame. Jumping teams that had won and those who were idle. The fact of the polls is that if you beat a highly ranked team you will be rewarded.

.

true but Michigan beat a team that was higher ranked then them at the time also (on the road at that) which lead to the move. Florida beat a good, but lower ranked Arkansas team.

Whart really troubles me is how so many voters and sport announcers will say the Michigan is the better team but yet they still voted for Florida??? Although a few years ago when Florida and Florida State had the rematch for the title game that was ok?!?!?!?!?!

I hope someday it'll be decided on the field

I would of liked a rematch so OHIO STATE could of beat Michigan again & then maybe PJ would of had to keep up that beautiful big O & then we could of heard more wild stories!!:p

Glad you are back Kenny. Where abouts in Ohio are you from?? I am from Fairborn, right outside of Dayton.
You have got to get caught up on PJ's wild stories since he had to put up that great big beautiful 0 avatar, they were a hoot & he was such a good sport!!!!
I think you are right, since our Wolverine stew turned out so good lets fry up some gators!!!!!

I was born in Barberton, but grew up in Akron, Grandma still lives in Barberton, and Mom& Sister live in Akron. I've been off since Thanksgiving, went to Father-in-laws in Kentwood, La. ate fried gator tail, YUUUMMMMM, then off to see my Mom, I'm looking forward to some time at home.

I still say the National Championship game was Nov. 18th, say what they will, (sports writers, coaches) the two best college football teams played. I've watched Florida, LSU, USC, Auburn, Louisville, Rutgers, VT, Tennesee, ND, Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Arkansas all play this year. and in my opinion either Michigan or Ohio State were on a differant level. Dont worry PJ Michigan will have its say next year, I dont see anyone standing in thier way in 2007. The gators will be real tasty after New Years:D

Absolutely! A playoff is the ONLY answer. There is an argument to be made both ways. I don't have a problem with Florida being there as much I have a huge problem with how they jumped MICHIGAN to do so. Especially when I hear some of the voters using the argument of "Didn't want a rematch" or "Didn't win conference". The first is not a VALID reason to vote Florida ahead of MICHIGAN and the second means NOTHING in regards to qualifying for the NC game. NOTHING! Vegas has MICHIGAN a 6 point favorite if they played Florida. Florida is a larger under dog to OSU on a neutral site than MICHIGAN was at the Shoe!! FLorida is better???? B.S.! I'm not even getting into stats because there are stats for BOTH sides of the argument. We could have a thread the size of this one just on this debate alone.

GO BLUE!!!

I'll say this again, I think both teams are deserving of the shot, both are excellent teams....

But I'd love to see a list of STATS that would clearly show Michigan as more deserving. I've listed many stats which lean towards FLA, on paper. Unfortunately thats all we will see, not on grass as it should be.

notre dame was #2 when we beat them. Wisconin was ranked and I beleive Penn state was when we beat them as well

the sad thing baout htis whole deabte is that it shouldn't be happening. it should be michigan florida in round 1 of the playoffs. it sucks the fickle voters and some computer system decide who is champ

Actually no, Wisconsin was not yet in the top 25 & Penn State & Iowa had already dropped out of the top 25. Again Notre Dame was the only ranked opponent that Michigan defeated. That's the fan perception thing taking over again.

A few other stats, Michigan scores just over 1 point a game more than Florida, and FLA gives up just over 1 point a game less than Michigan, so I think thats pretty much a wash.

I think the one "stat" that you can give to Michigan is a "quality loss" which I think alot of people are hangin there hat on.

Now the debate we can agree on is that there should be no debate... Just play it out on the field just like every other sport in the world...

The one Stat that really sticks out is Florida is #2 in penalities, ranked behind Akron.....Michigan is #87 and Ohio State is #98, Florida gave up over 800yds in penalities. The SEC spent all year beating up on Tulane, Miss State, Marshall, Temple, Fla Alantic, Louisiana-Lafayette, Utah State...ect. then played each other tough and "claim" to be the best, but when a ranked opponent like USC comes to play (USC 50 Arkansas 14) they can't hang, #11 Auburn beat #5 Florida by 10, #1 Ohio State beat #2 Michigan by three. Sorry but there isnt a stat in the world that could convince me that Auburn, Florida, LSU, Arkansas or Tennessee could or will beat either Ohio State or Michigan, the Big Ten will rule for another year....after this one:p I love the taste of fried gator tails!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gee, thats sort of like beating up on N. Illinois, W. Illinois, Bowling Green, San Diego State, Buffalo, Akron, Youngstown St, Temple.... Not to mention conference opponents Mich. St, Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern, etc. And struggling to beat Ball State...

I will agree with you that I don't think any of those SEC teams could beat Ohio St, including Florida. But guess what, neither could Michigan. Again, only ONE victory over a ranked opponent... Let stick with that "quality loss" justification.

In the current system, I just don't see how any 2 teams from 1 conference can play for the National Title. The entire situation wouldn't be as intriguing if the Big Ten would add another member and have a Title Game itself. Suffice the matchup of UM vs. OSU earlier in the year was the defacto Big Ten Title Game and OSU got the reward.

I hope that if you were a Michigan fan you were happy you got your shot.

BTW, I believe the system sucks and there will be no National Champion on the field until it is decided, ON THE FIELD. ESPN guys, radio guy, your neighbor, the garbage guy, and even me may think they know who would win no matter who OSU played. But the fact is, nobody knows unless the game is actually played.

Steve
First let me say that I agree with you 100% regarding a playoff. We will never know the better team in any match up without an actual game. I don't even feel statistics can settle this argument and that's why I'm not getting into all that hair splitting. It's simple... Play it!

As I said earlier I don't even have as much of a problem with Florida (very good team) being there IF they were already ranked above MICHIGAN but I do have a problem with the voters "philosophies" in determining that Florida should jump MICHIGAN. You hit on a couple of my issues with your reply. You made a comment about two teams shouldn't come from the same conference for the N.C. game. What you are saying is that the two BEST teams can't be from one conference? That you DON'T want the two best teams to play for the N.C.? You think the NC game should be between "conference champions" and NOT the BEST two teams in the country? I'm speaking generically and not about MICHIGAN. Let's hypothetically say that no one else was close (Wins) to MI and tOSU or any other two teams. You would prefer a lesser quality team play in the N.C. game just because they won their weaker conference as opposed to the two best teams in the rankings that coincidently come from the same conference? I completely disagree. It's also NOT a current criteria for voting yet it was used as a reason against MICHIGAN.

You mentioned that MICHIGAN had their shot. Shot at what? Their last scheduled road game in Columbus. Who coincidently was number one at the time. I don't see that being a "National Championship shot". Florida should go to Columbus and play the National Championship game there since that is how MICHIGAN "got their shot". MICHIGAN lost one game to the best team in the country. Florida lost a game also yet MICHIGAN's loss in considered a "shot" and Florida's loss is ...well... just a loss and not as damaging as MICHIGANS "shot loss".

Lastly the people that voted because they didn't want a rematch are completely wrong. That is not a fair way to vote. They are voting for the two BEST teams in the country and not who they want to see in a bowl match up. The two BEST teams should play for the N.C. REGARDLESS if they've already played.

Sorry!!! to everyone for being so long winded!!! I know this thread is long enough on it's own! :D

GO BLUE!!!
GO BIG TEN!!!

Now that I have vented .... :o I will just say again that a playoff, as a lot of people here are saying, is the ONLY way. This debate or debates from earlier years will never be resolved until we play the games.

MICHIGAN is playing in the Rose Bowl. It's a great traditional match up. There are a lot of good bowl match ups that should be interesting.

GO BLUE!!!
BEAT usc!!!

In the simplest of terms regarding a playoff, lets take the top 8 from the BCS & place them in traditional 8 team format. Look how awesome this would be. It would answer alot of our opinionated questions about conference to conference, etc...

1.) Ohio State
8.) Boise State

4.) LSU
5.) USC

2.) Florida
7.) Wisconsin

3.) Michigan
6.) Louisville

In my opinion, these matchups would put Florida vs Michigan in the second round, ON THE FIELD, to battle it out for the right to play for a national championship. It would also answer, does LSU really have the team speed to run with a USC & Ohio State? Is the Big East weak, would Louisville be able to score 35 on Mich? This would be awesome!!!

Now there would still be legitimate gripes, for instance In both the AP & coaches poll, Oklahoma would be in & Boise State out, not to mention OK should be 11-1 anyway....

I think it's a great concept Brian. I'm sure there still might be some debates on who is in and who is out of the final 7 and 8 spots but I would rather see that as opposed to a debate keeping a deserving team from a N.C. game. I would even rather see a 4 team system over the current one.

GO BLUE!!!

An 8-team system would be my choice as well. Something along the lines of 5 conference tie-ins and 3 wildcards or perhaps 6 and 2. I think it would very cool and would only take 3 weekends to complete.

Thanks for saving me the keystrokes. :D

I'm with ya Tom... Okla was the victim of the biggest JOB of the year... And Stoops gets my vote for coach of the year...

Stoops gets my vote for coach of the year...

stoops has done a fine job, but c'mon the coach of the year has to be Greg Schiano. Seriously, how many of you even knew Rutgers had a football team before this year, then they go and almost win the Big East, and only lost because of a dropped pass on a two point conversion. Jim Grobe of Wake Forest also deserves to be in that argument too for the massive turn around he pulled too!!

espn claimed that Michigan had a 2-1 record against ranked teams
