Collective Bargaining Agreement.
If Tyson didn't like the language, they could lock the doors.

Gimme a friggin' break. So the union comes to you and says we want this day vs. that day off, and you want them to lock them out? Over some misguided jingoistic "America, love it or leave it" crap?

Why does the company care? It's a labor union creation, created by and for the unions (see this), if unions want to abandon it in favor of some other day, why should the company (or anyone here) care?

True. That said, I've negotiated many union contracts over the years. And every contract I've been a part of has always stated that work on Labor Day could only be done with the consent of the union. No other holiday in our contracts had that provision (though there were provisions for holiday pay plus overtime). I can tell you right now there's no way I would have EVER agreed to give up Labor Day for Eid al-Fitr or any other religious holiday. This is something I've always felt very strongly about. As far as I'm concerned any union that gives or trades away Labor Day is giving a slap in the face to it's own heritage and history.

Uhm, I agree with you.

You mean a country where freedom of religion is embraced?

In this country you have freedom of religion and freedom of speech, but no where does it say i have to embrace it! If Greg Moon wants to embrace it feel free to do so but don't try to force it on me!

I suppose Christmas and Easter will be next!?

I doubt it was forced. You don't do anything in a union without a vote.

That's very true. I also suspect that a large majority of employees in that plant were of the muslim faith and that the suggestion for the holiday came from the Tyson employees themselves.

Contractual holiday provisions do not always follow the national pattern. For instance, my mother once worked for a company where the employees received Yom Kippur as one of their paid holidays. The company I worked for had Good Friday as one of its' holidays. And I recall that the autoworkers at the now defunct Checker plant had the first day of hunting season as a holiday.

this is a private business making a working contract with it's employees
in order to better serve their employer/employee relations so as to
maximize their bottom line.
as far as i can read, this 'holiday' decision does not affect anyone in that
community other than the union employees working at this particular factory.
this decision appears to have been a majority vote by the union employees
and accepted by Tyson.

anyone stop to think that Tyson may be ecstatic over the performance
of this minority group of employess and therefore listens and reacts,
within reason, to their wants and needs in order to maintain their
great work performance?

Yet You are 'forcing' Two religious Holidays on me... can I get My religious Holidays off with pay too?

I only thought it was the Big Six....
National Hang Over Day
Memorial Day
4th of July
Labor Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas (Religious)

I could understand if it was a new holiday but Labor Day is a holiday celebrating the worker which is what the union is all about.
Does that mean religion has taken over the union in the Tyson Food business.

I'm just absolutely floored that they didn't decide to let each employee CHOOSE which day they want off on an individual basis. Give them the option. Geeze....it's not rocket science. It's compromise!

I too am disappointed that Labor Day would be the one that was eliminated, but perhaps the labor decided that the other 7 holidays were more important to them, in this, and only this, factory.

Christmas Holiday is celebrated for days on end in this country, with time off on the 25th, typically 1/2 day on the 24th, and many people (myself included) try to take the week after as vacation.

That being said, if the body of the union voted, and presented the results of the vote to Tyson, why is everyone one upset? The residents? Well, if you don't like how Tyson treats its workers, shut the plant down and watch the jobs go elsewhere. And, see the wages, taxes and jobs go right along with it.

Wouldn't a union vote be democracy in motion? Or is that forbade since it isn't a Christian holiday?

Speaking of National Holidays, has anyone seen John McCain claim credit for advancing the initiation of MLK day, while his voting record says otherwise? You just can't make this stuff up.

I agree Kelly. It is called a floating holiday. I get 2 a year.
Some people flat out don't want a muslim holiday recognized or allowed to be paid for.

Many people work Christmas, Thanksgiving, July 4th and on and on, (cops, fire fighters, retail, factory workers) and NOW this is an issue?

Is it the time off, or the fact it is a muslim holiday that is irking most? I would bet it is the latter.

Tyson Foods has the final word and Labor Day is an AMERICAN HOLIDAY and this is AMERICA and we should never have to change our heritage to accommodate another country. It is LABOR DAY and the Muslims will have to adjust if they can't accept it.

TYSON you have just lost a valuable customer!
Is there no such thing as an American born Muslim? Or is every American a Christian?

This has nothing to do with a "National" holiday, but rather how a corporation compromises with its workers to put out a product, and make money. No one other than the employees of this factory are affected. Certainly not on a national level.

Something tells me you have a problem with MLK day being a national holiday also. Forgive me if I am mistaken.

You are a bit short on recognized national (ok, federal) holidays Karl, but I get your drift.

Tuesday, January 1 New Year’s Day
Monday, January 21 Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, February 18 Washington’s Birthday
Monday, May 26 Memorial Day
Friday, July 4 Independence Day
Monday, September 1 Labor Day
Monday, October 13 Columbus Day
Tuesday, November 11 Veterans Day
Thursday, November 27 Thanksgiving Day
Thursday, December 25 Christmas Day

*All 2008 dates

You missed MLK Day, Washington's Birthday, Columbus Day, Veterans Day. All of which are very substantive observations of people or groups..

Why am I getting the feeling that because I'm not a Christan, I'm not an American?

y'all can believe what you want if it helps you make it through life... my beliefs are different from yours, I also read the Constitution different from you, Our Forefathers were very careful NOT to establish a State religion.
