This seems to be the case to me. Nothing appears to be out of line. It is possible a Bell Helmet saved her Bacon at one time and she wholeheartedly belives in them. Unfortunately the helmet, no matter what Brand it was, just was along for the ride. It did the job it was designed to do. The problem is a hard impact at high speed can cause brain damage by allowing the brain to move around inside the skull and collide with the skull's bones. Any Helmet can only protect one's head (Brain) from the outside (see internal brain damage causes from inertia). The fluid surrounding the Brain (cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)) lets the brain "Float" and protects it to some extent but has it's limits. A crash sometimes causes swelling and/or leaking from the sack around the fluid. The damage from Concusions unfortunately are cumletive and are especially problematic in Children and Adults over about 60 years old. Knowing that John has had multiple concussions it is highly probably that the Doctors won't clear him to drive again, BUT making an "All out effort to recover" just in case is not a bad idea and gives a reason to not give up and say "Woe is Me". As goal driven as John is it seems that he most likely has a better chance of winning this next "Round" of life.
