Randy and his driver Peter Swayne are running the points meet at Tuscon, and DRC reported that while Peter was warming the motor, a stone flew off one of the slicks, and hit Randy in the glasses. The good news is he's OK, but it could have been bad. I know RG has been posting here for a long time-- good luck for the rest of the weekend guys!

yikes, that's never good. Glad he's okay!!!!!

2 years ago at the World Finals, Don Hudson was warming up and the lid of the puke tank flew off like a frisby on steroids towards the Front of the Car and nailed our dear friend Bob in the head.

He was okay and back at the track, but with a bunch of stitches.

Took us forever to get some medical help, and then instead of an ambulence, they sent a golf cart, then realized they needed an ambulence.

It was quite the ordeal.

When I was a kid and wore glasses, I was called four eyes. Now those glasses make me feel a lot safer when I'm around the car and work is being done on it.

Glad to Hear RG's going to be Okay!

I've never got tagged during a Warm-up, but a few years ago at our local track I was standing in the Staging lanes about 50-60' from the Burnout box. A Rock thumped me in the Shoulder Real good, That could've been my eye! Needless to say when Cars are doing Burnouts, I make sure my back is turned or I'm plenty far away.

Years ago I was @ a race when Denshams crew pulled the ground strap upon start-up and BOOM...about 200 cc's of nitro found its way into the back cylinders (car was loaded @ an angle) and he went to the hospital w/ injuries to his left leg/hip area...lifted the head 2 inches and blew the blower off. A huge wake-up call for me to always clear the cylinders before ignition....

Was @ a race in the 90's when Ormsbys car would not shut-off, even after they unbuckled the fuel pump and Gwynn ran over w/ a fire extinguisher (sp ck) and sprayed down the injector....Motor went to about 6000 rpm in the pits w/ injector closed...everyone was scattering...

Terry I bet that was in Sonoma '96 correct? Gary was wearing shorts warming up the car and BOOM! A Piece of Shrapnel cut his leg wide open, glad he was Ok!

I talked with Randy yesterday morning and he is doing fine. :D

He showed me what was left of the sun glasses he was wearing when the object flew off the slick and hit the lens.

Warning: "Good" sun glasses are not necessarily SAFE sun glasses. The lens was nothing but a bunch of small knife like shards.

The local trauma center washed out the very small pieces and he only ended up with some small cuts and abrasions. This could have been tragic!:

If you are wearing any kind of eyewear, be sure they are shatter proof!!

I don't want to sound like somebodies mother, but "You'll put your eye out!"

I always put my gloved hand up to protect the pretty parts when they roll threw the bleach box...:D I've been tagged in the knee real hard and had a shoulder shot once... the guy walking next to me got a direct hit to his pinky finger and it was snapped at a 90 degree angle when I looked at it and about feel to the ground in shock... A snap, crackle, and pop, along with racer tape and he hung the rest of the day...;) Always cover your eyes guys and gals!!

Joe....the Densham incident was not in Calif......
Same thing happened to the Hirata family, Afuel, a couple years ago and three people went to the hospital needing major stitches.
Many years ago B Meyer blipped the throttle and car came off jackstands and drove up the side of the trailer..there were tire marks up 10 ft on the trailer and I think that incident almost killed some fans...
Kalitta had a motor backfire in the pits and the injector blew apprx. 100 ft straight up and came back down thru the dually windshield...Kalitta was very concerned and glad it did not hit a spectator.
Alot of companies will not allow you to put their decal anywhere on the engine today as if any part of the engine should injure someone they might be held liable...as the courts see it....ask Doug Herbert...

Terry then it's Happened to Gary more than once then, cause at Sonoma '96 while warming the Car Gary's Motor hydraulicked(sp?). He was wearing shorts at the Time and a piece of Shrapnel cut his Calf pretty good! I was 2 trailers down and heard it.

Joe...I think your right...after years on different tracks you sometimes forget what city your in...I know it only happened once w/ Densham.

Friday night I was thanking God for what didn't happen rather than what did.

We had an issue with a transmission and were running a little late with our warm-up. I started the car, looked at the timimg real quick then had Pete shift 1-2 then 2-3. Actually I was standing about 2 feet beck of the left front wheel when all of the sudden the right lens of my sunglasses took a hit and exploded. It hit so hard I fell back a couple feet. I remember seeing bright light before I put my hand up to my eye. When I pulled my hand back I saw from my other eye that there was blood running into my hand. I ran into the trailer to get water to throw on it and one of my guys threw me on the floor of the trailer and started pouring sports bottles full of water in my eye as they held me down and held my eye open.

After the first few bottles full of fresh-from-the-ice chest cold water I got up and the medical personel were already there. When I told them I've had the lasik proceedure on my eyes and that I've got a corial flap (which I thought must have been ripped off) they insisted that I go to emergency. At this point I was unable to see anything but a bright white blurr out of my right eye. When I first saw the blood I thought I lost my eye, but it was from a cut on my cheek bone from the rock or glass.

When I got to the hospital they were going to admit me because my blood pressure was 165/235. I told them it was that high because the tranny had issues, we were being called to the lanes, I just about lost an eye, we missed a session and now I'm here in the emergency room.

The on call opthalmologist (sp) came in and did a series of tests and confirmed that I had cornial abrasions including a large gash and what he called "an impact mark from some object" and that was causing swelling in my eye that was making it so I couldn't see. They continued to flush it out, applied all kinds of stuff to it and sent me to the pharmacy for a series of drops. The doctor said the risk now is infection.

When I finally got back to the track later that night the guys had accumulated a small pile of glass shards that used to be the right lens of my sunglasses. Thankfully none of them ended up embedded in my eye.

I want to thank all the people who came by our pit over the weekend to check up on me and the people here, too. It sure means a lot to know that friends are concerned and do care.

Bob Miner asked me who's job it is to wipe the tires off before the warm up. Like Dave said, now it's everyones.

Randy.....I had lasik done as well and the Dr that did the procedure (TLC group) suggested wearing protective glasses anytime I was @ the drags or playing any sports as he has seen eyes shattered from debris/baseballs/etc after lasik...he seemed to think the eye was not as strong to foreign materials after major laser surgery...
Glad to hear you are okay...

Kelly,
I had mine done @ TLC in Studio City, CA where something like 75% of all the PGA/MLB/NBA players have it done. Maybe because he was a sports specialist? I dunno....I paid more than enough so I was glad he shared evrything he knew w/ me...
Hows your vision since the surgery? Mine was done 3 years ago and is better today than a yr after the procedure...

I had the surgery done 8 years ago and wasn't told quite few things until recently.

I went to the Saddleback Eye Center for a consultation last year as I was considering a touch-up (tweak). I highly recommend them. Anyway, that's when I was told that the cornial flap never actually heals and reattaches to your eye. He said it's on pretty tight, but the best description is "velcro".

You can do almost any activity including swimming, but the flap can dislodge if hit by something. I always wear sun glasses around the car whenever it's running because I felt that even a flash fire could cook the flap as well. We have several pairs of clear and tinted safety glasses in the trailer but for some reason on Friday I worn my regular sun glasses.

If I had a choice, I would still have had the lasik surgery. I was a minus 6 prescription (basically blind) and now I am 20/30 or so. Contact lenses in the pits are the worst with all the spray cleaners, clutch dust, fumes, etc., and I've never had an issue until now with lasik. My eyesight in my right eye is still blurry, but I'm happy to still have an eye and I'm sure over time it will get better.

Your flap never healed? If you had it 8 yrs ago did you have the knife/blade procedure to make the flap?
The blade technique is a thing of yesterday....but then again todays best technology in eye surgery is yesterdays best. I am blown away by what they can do..

On a side note...was @ a race when a crewmember of another team was messing w/ the teams A/C unit in the dually...he broke a line which shot freon into his eyes/ and w/in a milli-second the freon froze his eyeballs/he reached up to feel what happened and shattered both eyes like glass....instantly blind...it was very sad..

My wife (esq) as seen litigation in court where car battery explosions have blinded many people...

Kelly,

I had it done late in 2001 (I think). I was near sighted to about 2 feet. My vision was 20/600 before. Yes, I was legally blind....and I couldn't wear contacts because of my allergies. I HATED glasses. I only started wearing them in the early 90's. I probably had needed them for at least 10 years.

Anyway, my vision is constant at 20/15. I'm very pleased. When I had it done, he cautioned that he can't stop presmobyopia. He can't stop the eyes from getting old and one day I might need reading glasses. Well....that one day is here. Not quite for reading, but definitely for super small text. I understand they can correct it now. :)

Wow Randy. That is very scary. I can't even imagine that first feeling of your eye being GONE!!!

I am really glad it wasn't worse and that you feel you are on the mend.
