Pro Stock Fires?

well, I know how a street carb works, how does so much fuel end up in the motor after a run?

Got to remember Jason did work for a cup team awhile back....and every time they let off they get a burst of flame out the pipes....with much smaller carbs in place....

When the chutes come out the carbs usually spill fuel in the intake, nothing new. The fire starts because some sets of headers have the O2's in a position to help lite the fuel when the fuel makes it through the engine and into the headers.

All that the driver has to do is start the engine for a sec and the flame is out.

Toby, I don't understand your comment regarding "having the O2's in a position to help light the fuel" . . . on my wife's Top Dragster (which runs 2 stages of Nitrous) we run 8 O2 sensors. We have to be nasty rich to burn visible fuel in the pipes. When the 2 carbs slam shut after a run no fuel dumps into the intake (and we run our floats very high, but I do have roughly 3 inch extension tubes on the bowl vents). We run at basically the same speed/mph as pro stock, just at 2000 lbs in a rail. The G's from 2 simultaneous chutes hitting is not much more than the acceleration G's.

The pipes will light fuel all on there own, the 02's do have to be at 1250 deg F to read, but after any amount of running the header pipes are plenty hot to light excess fuel.

My guess is float not holding off high fuel pressure.

If you get a chance go watch practically any PS team servicing their cars after a run. First thing is to remove the plugs and spin the motor over. It produces a couple of good squirts out of each open spark plug hole. The difference between your dragster and a PS car is you have the convenience of not having to make headers fit between frame rails, oil pan fittings, body etc. Besides all the twist and turns of a PS header, the O2 then has to be fit somewhere. Some header guys will put a sensor at the bottom of a pipe. You have to be nasty rich to visibly burn fuel in the pipes is true and understandable. You have to be nasty rich to see it because the engine is running. The PS engine isn't running at the point of the header fires. All that is required to extinguish the header flames is the driver starting the engine up and the flames are gone.

BTW, I make a slick four stage nitrous controller that replaces the digisets and relays. Its getting into more and more door cars, SpeedTech had it on Balooshis ADRL car last race. I want to get it into some TD cars, check it out. It also had four other outputs so it can do the auto shift also. If interested I'll make you deal on one.

Nice subtle plug Mr. Toby....

And great explanation too....

OK Toby, I can't yet say that I understand because you seem to be describing an engine on the edge of hydraulic rather than a conventional air/fuel mixture. Oh well, I'll readily admit to being much better at my day job than this racing stuff.

At PRI the last 2 years I've checked out the stuff at Speg Mend and have been impressed but shocked by the pricing. I'll have to give you a call in the next month or so!

Maybe the PS guys kill the ignition but leave their foot on the floor (e.g. carbs open). That would surely load up the engine on fuel.

They still have fuel flowing through Idle jets after fuel and Ignition is shut off.
They need to look at shutdown procedures because of residual pressure from electric fuel pump.
Or go with fuel injection ! How many cars have carbs anyway these days ?
Fuel injection has return lines to depressure the system quickly.

I had a Holly completely fill my engine with fuel one time while the car was sitting up.
Siphened out the whole tank right in the engine !

It was a Dodge Charger W /440 and it was stolen right after that. I hope they blowed it up and roasted themselves cause I never got to pull the carb and work on the stuck float ! :D

Careful, Johnny! You're one of the few Dodge guys I've ran into that's not in denial about that!!! LMAO!!!

How ya' been? You still doing the Musclecar Reunions?

That extra 'battery' that could only be charged up inside the trailer was Darrell's best friend. :D They should have come up with a better story than the distributor shaft broke.

Regarding announcing, I will be at Monster Mopar Weekend at Gateway this weekend. I am not working the Musclecar Reunion shows right now. Seems their budget doesn't have the necessary room in it...

Well, he's on nitrous, obviously...................;)

Sorry. Just figured I would get it started.

I think that there are some Pro Stock guys that go outside the envelope for sure, but… It would be hard to prove it without going through another ordeal like I went through to prove it. I don’t think about it, and I don’t worry about it, and I don’t even give a ......................Bob Glidden 2008 DRO interview
