The can move the race. But.......
What if they called it today and they could have raced? yes the forecast is bad, but forecasts have been wrong before.
years ago in Gainesville it was raining Saturday, and the Sunday forecast was more of the same. NHRA pushed the race back a week. Then Sunday morning the sun was out. And you can't un-call it. The fans were rightfully furious. Made plans, took vacation, traveled, paid for hotels, flights and cars that can't be refunded because they were already used. And the weatherman was wrong. The race could have been run on Sunday as scheduled.
One time in Bristol there was a 100% chance of rain on Sunday, and we ran the event without interruption, a couple of times we were told it was raining at the circle track, and it was raining in town, but it didn't rain on the Dragstrip and we completed the event.
There was a divisional event in Tucson a few years back. it started raining Sunday afternoon and was supposed to rain for the next couple of days. We were down to quarters or semis in all the classes and Mike Rice called all the remaining drivers for a meeting. The event was run after the Phoenix National and many of the drivers were eastern guys who came for Pomona, Phoenix and were hitting Tucson on the way back east.
Two options, stay over and if we can run tomorrow, if so we can complete the event in a couple of hours. Or, finish at the next D7 race (which I think was Bakersfield). The California guys all wanted to go to Bakersfield, the eastern guys all wanted to stay over because they would have had to haul all the way to Bakersfield to run two rounds after going to Gainesville or withdraw from the event. When you're in the semis it's a tough call to withdraw. After much discussion Mike made the decision that we would stay and try to run Monday, but if we were not racing by 10 AM it would be moved to Bakersfield. He said we have to try so the eastern guys have a chance to complete the event.
The California guys were pretty mad, they had to get home to go to work, they didn't want to hang around and told
Mike: "You KNOW it's going to rain tomorrow."
Mike told them: "Then you can go home and if it rains tomorrow, we will see you in Bakersfield."
Racers: "But what if it doesn't rain?"
Mike: "Your opponent gets a bye run tomorrow. But since you KNOW it's going to rain tomorrow, what are you worried about?"
All of the sudden, they weren't so sure about the weather. And every single racer that was SURE it was going to rain stayed overnight. Monday morning was dry, and we finished things up by about 10:30 and it started sprinkling just before noon.
You have to try. Even if the odds are against you, you have to try.
