Pomona (3 Viewers)

off and running. cal method with a double breakout win in first race. very close. cal's -0.002 to parker's -0.008 ...... .0062 MOV.
pretty good notes for no Q ....... saw ida's name on list too.

watching live feed. a little downtime between SG and TD. guy in golf cart driving down backside of wall on rt. side of track. he is straightening
all the sponsor/contingency signs that lean on the backside of the wall.
- at pomona, who are the signs on the rt. side of the track intended for?
- these same signs have been on backside of walls forever. does anyone even look at them? it's a digital age. perhaps time for a scrolling message board.
- really enjoying listening to warren evans.

It looks questionable whether it’s gonna happen. I hate it, I’ve been caught in rain at the world finals, and at the winternationals. And damn! LOL.

Somehow, both times, they got it in. Not sure about this year though.

when would they make call the call to move this race to next weekend? sunday morning or sooner?
I don’t think there’s any option to move the race. I think it’s either this weekend or it’s just gonna have to be run at the gators or at the Phoenix race.

If it is at all possible, NHRA will get it in. They are an expert at dealing with situations like this if it can be done, they will do it.

If the forecast is even close to accurate there is no way. They're calling for heavy rain in Pomona all the way through Tuesday of next week. Flood advisories are already out there.

It drizzled over night here in So CA. I am about 25 miles from the track. It's now sprinkling again here. Hopefully it will stop long enough at some point to dry the track and get some racing in today.

With most of the Sportsman classes finishing during a marathon day yesterday, it will be very quiet between rounds of the Pro classes the rest of the weekend.

An overlooked aspect of these rainouts, is that the NHRA can take a big hit financially since there will probably be minimal spectator turnout and thus minimal revenue coming in for the event. I think we are lucky the NHRA didn't go bankrupt during the virus lockdown era. They sold their long paid-for headquarters building in CA to raise money to stay afloat during that time.

Why cant they move the race?

First time I've ever pulled the plug on all my travel stuff before a race. Although I have kept open the option to fly in and out Sunday if it looks possible to do eliminations although not counting on that. Can't imagine they move it to next year with all the championships on the line. My guess is NHRA has all the options figured out waiting for the weather to decide for them

Does anyone know what would keep them from pushing out to next weekend? That's my preference since I've cancelled my travel & hotel plans for this weekend...
One reason would be that pushing it to next weekend means extended extra hotel costs for the crews. Maybe not much of an issue decades ago, when teams only had a few crew members, and travel costs were much lower, but now each team travels with a small army, so that gets expensive.

The awards banquet is on the 17th at Pechanga Resort Casino kind of hard to crown champions without a season ending race also cancelling the venue of the banquet would be costly.

The can move the race. But.......
What if they called it today and they could have raced? yes the forecast is bad, but forecasts have been wrong before.
years ago in Gainesville it was raining Saturday, and the Sunday forecast was more of the same. NHRA pushed the race back a week. Then Sunday morning the sun was out. And you can't un-call it. The fans were rightfully furious. Made plans, took vacation, traveled, paid for hotels, flights and cars that can't be refunded because they were already used. And the weatherman was wrong. The race could have been run on Sunday as scheduled.

One time in Bristol there was a 100% chance of rain on Sunday, and we ran the event without interruption, a couple of times we were told it was raining at the circle track, and it was raining in town, but it didn't rain on the Dragstrip and we completed the event.

There was a divisional event in Tucson a few years back. it started raining Sunday afternoon and was supposed to rain for the next couple of days. We were down to quarters or semis in all the classes and Mike Rice called all the remaining drivers for a meeting. The event was run after the Phoenix National and many of the drivers were eastern guys who came for Pomona, Phoenix and were hitting Tucson on the way back east.

Two options, stay over and if we can run tomorrow, if so we can complete the event in a couple of hours. Or, finish at the next D7 race (which I think was Bakersfield). The California guys all wanted to go to Bakersfield, the eastern guys all wanted to stay over because they would have had to haul all the way to Bakersfield to run two rounds after going to Gainesville or withdraw from the event. When you're in the semis it's a tough call to withdraw. After much discussion Mike made the decision that we would stay and try to run Monday, but if we were not racing by 10 AM it would be moved to Bakersfield. He said we have to try so the eastern guys have a chance to complete the event.

The California guys were pretty mad, they had to get home to go to work, they didn't want to hang around and told
Mike: "You KNOW it's going to rain tomorrow."
Mike told them: "Then you can go home and if it rains tomorrow, we will see you in Bakersfield."
Racers: "But what if it doesn't rain?"
Mike: "Your opponent gets a bye run tomorrow. But since you KNOW it's going to rain tomorrow, what are you worried about?"

All of the sudden, they weren't so sure about the weather. And every single racer that was SURE it was going to rain stayed overnight. Monday morning was dry, and we finished things up by about 10:30 and it started sprinkling just before noon.

You have to try. Even if the odds are against you, you have to try.

Alan
