Pomona Crowd...

Looks to be the weakest ever for this race. I know about Friday's weather but I'm watching Saturday's qualifying and it looks like a ghost town.

I just got back from Pomona. I did not have much of a wait at El Merendero in the morning, not much of a wait parking (which btw, has now increased to $15), no wait in the turnstiles getting in and had plenty of elbow room in section 9 where I sat. I also had wide swaths of sections 22 and 24 to myself.

Every category occupied less space in the pits. There were less food vendors and less midway displays. The saddest thing was the museum. What happened there? it was bereft of many of the cars that used to be in there.

Was one of the quickest events I have been to. It was over in a flash. Still, the racing was good.

You should have went with me to the El Merendo on Tuesday night, Paul, I didn't think I was ever going to get out of that place. I heard there was some pretty stellar numbers this weekend with very few oil downs, and that some Southern California girl kicked some azzz in Top Fuel... was that true or was my info source fibbing again?:)

I have been attending the Winternationals for 40 years and i have never seen the stands so empty. For those that thought it was a good crowd, you must have been sitting at the starting line. Section 18 and 19 where i was sitting was a ghost town. The west side stands were not even half full. I will wager the attendance was less than 50% capacity.

Aerials don't lie Sunday was sparse and it's a fact that attendances and TV ratings aren't very good although they'll try and make it like it is!
Sonoma is one of the worse tracks for spectators yet Sunday is usually sold out!
Go figure!

When top fuel has less than a full field for the Winternationals, that is not a good sign. Pomona used to be when everybody showed up with shiny, new cars and the fields overflowed with racers.
Not anymore.
Any predictions on how many races occur where one, or more, of the three pro classes don't have full fields this year?

With the amount of rain So-Cal has had this winter and the forecast for this past weekend I can understand why some fans decided not to show up.

I would buy that excuse but it's at the majority of the races!
I'm curious to know what happen to the Kalitta two car Funny Car team that was supposed to have happen.
NHRA needs to stop the aerial shots of the stands even during the fuel races it shows the sparsely filled seats!
They need to do something Top Fuel Harley's ain't the answer!

You mean Alexis Dejoria and JR Todd........that sounds like a two-car FC team to me. And as for Paul Lee, Kalitta Motorsports announced last July that his car could be running up to 10 national events in 2017, finances permitting.

Don't underestimate the ability to spout off at the mouth without knowing all of the facts ... or having any idea how a business is run. I'm not saying NHRA has all of the answers, but I'd love to be as critical with some of your business dealings. NHRA management is clearly not in lather, rinse, repeat mode. They are making changes and trying to find an ideal formula. What motorsports model do you have them up against that is kicking their ass?

I didn't go and I'm glad I didn't between my kidney stones and the bad weather down there but yeah you are right a few new look cars but not many. No Larry Dixon either. It's musical chairs again with a couple more cars pulled out of the mix. It's now a few super teams and a few independents, and a very predicable outcome. The super teams beat on the little teams and then the super teams make it to the finals and race each other.

Just my opinion but part of the reason for the smaller then normal crowds is peoples interest are changing and in many ways this is just a normal process.

It's not just different forms of racing look at many other sports from golf, baseball, and football. They are all seeing the exact same thing happening fewer fans showing up.

Some people will blame the costs of entry to these events and others will blame the sectioning body but whatever you want to blame it on it's real and just might be the future.

Again it's just my opinion and we all know opinions are like toilet seats and everyone has one.

Don't forget that lots of fans would rather watch on their mega screen at home

I would agree things change, personally I do not go to any "sporting" events, I would rather spend money on other things, I do follow NHRA and will go every chance I get, it is how I choose to spend my money. NHRA & scuba. I have been to as many as 13 events in a year, being in Ohio I have a lot of "close" tracks, 10 hours is close for me. I think at this point the western swing is what I have missed. The wife and I are planning on flying out, renting a small MH and following them should be fun.
