I might be in the minority, but as a broadcast I really liked the ESPN years, especially Dunn and Reid. There were plenty of problems with ESPN I guess, especially how they treated the NHRA, but I enjoyed the product.

Rose colored rearview mirrors are a real thing.
At one time, People LOVED Dave McClelland and hated Bob Frey.

Because I have made my email public, it's amazing. People that used to tell me I sucked and should retire or be fired now tell me how much they miss me.

Several years ago, the Alabama football team came to play my Arkansas Razorbacks.
After the game I was back at our tailgate area and saw Eli Gold walking down the road toward his car. He did the radio calls for Alabama.
He was a nice person and talked with me a couple of minutes.
I asked with him how he liked calling the NHRA races. He was kind of ambivalent about it. He did say he really liked NASCAR.

Agree with this. I think what makes him great is that I prefer the cadence of the track announcers over TV presenters. I can't put my finger on it but it's just different. His background is in track announcing and he just knows what to say and when and how to say it.
Also - I know Paul Page gets a lot of flack on here, and it took him a little while, but once he and Mike Dunn synched, they made a great duo. Paul brought the TV persona (think of your local newscaster's tone and presentation) and Mike brought the technical and real world expertise.

when anyone thinks about nhra drag racing in the 70's, 80's and part of 90's, i think we all hear dave and steve's voices
in our heads. it's like jim mackay's voice saying 'the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat' ...... after those two i thought
bob fry set the tone for alan r., brian l., and jason g.; all four having the vernacular and wit to deliver informative and entertaining
commentary. i do not think t. pedregon possesses the same talents as the afore mentioned ...... never really had a problem listening to paul page, bill stevens, lewis bloom, marty reid, dave reiff, mike dunn, gary gerould, and probably forgetting a few.
i always wished brett kepner would have been more involved with the nhra.
