Graham Light responded to my e-mail and I thought it appropriate I share it here:

Bobby:

The policy addressing this scenerio has been in effect for a number of years. In reference to rescheduled events, page 55 of 2009 Rulebook states "A winning contestant in a Professional category unable to return will receive round money and points as if the contestant had lost in the prior round". This policy was implemented as a result of racers not returning as they anticipated losing at the rescheduled date - hence affecting the quality of the show for the spectators. It's also unfair to reward a team not returning the same amount as a team making the financial investment to stay.

I did have a discussion with Mike Strasburg, and in reality the difference between first and second round money ($4,000) was offset by his saving two nights hotel rooms and the cost of running the car on Tuesday.

Hopefully I've adequately addressed your concerns. Thank you for your support of NHRA Drag Racing.

Graham

My respectful response stated a need to revisit this rule since the number of full-time, pro teams running T/F for the full year is minimal and they need to encourage and reward teams like Strasburgs rather than penalize them for having regular lives and jobs.

Can someone please tell me what this is supposed to mean?

What does the price of a hotel room have to do with winning a round and not getting paid for it? Or getting the points for winning a round? And the last time I checked, breaking, not getting the car to start or not showing up for the next round is one way to lose that round. When did the definition of lose get so uniquely specific?
Who is defining this as re-scheduled. This race was a rain delay! There was no scheduling. It was "race as soon as we have sun and a semi dry track." To put in play a vacant rule considering re-scheduling is inappropriate and incorrect.
NHRA still has three days to do what is right. But my weekend at the Phoenix races is cancelled until further notice.

Curtis, tell the boys we're up for feeding them another Bar-b-que if there is a day or evening convenient to head to this end of town? Even if it's Sunday evening we're up for it. I'll PM you our phone numbers.

So what? It was in the team's better interest to go ahead and go home? At best, it was a push, so why bother?

Also: The above P/E ratio assumes Strasburg was certain to be beaten in the 2nd round.

Apparently, the team didn't want to leave -- they had to leave. There is a difference.

Right you are Cole. Antron not only blew the tires off but blew the top of the engine off and launched the chutes during the madness and had to be towed off the track. Sounds like a pretty certain victory in the other lane if you ask me. Anything faster than 15.892 wins!

This whole deal is nothing less than the misuse of a rule written to prevent a completely different scenario. Opportunistic withholding of funds at best.
