Just curious cliff, did A gas have motors that big back in the day ?
No. Maybe 450 - 496 CI, or like that. Cast iron engines, heads, but they were quick for what they were. The old A/Gas Supercharged is the ancestor of Pro Mod today.

I'd love to attend a nostalgia meet where A/GS cars are gathered to race. SWC.... Big John....Ohio George....ahh, those were the days. They have 280-inch NA doorslammers today quicker than those cars but a blown Willys or Anglia had SOUL. I miss 'em dearly.

I drove the 33 AA/GS willy's the Traveler for Mr. Bill Altizer for 9 months. My only crew member was the late Roger Garden. Roger later purchased the car from Bill. Racing the likes of Bones Barlogh, Doug Cook, KS Pitman, It doesn't get any better that that. I had a ball but, it was the biggest hand full of a race car that I ever drove.

Larry, do you remember this car? The Panella Trucking Anglia driven by Ken Dondero. I've seen it run back in the day. Injected SBC, then upgraded with a 6-71. Not for the faint of heart; this one was a 4 speed. I'm guessing you had to be on pretty good drugs to make a pass in that thing. Here's a good HRM story that details its beautiful restoration.

My dad ran A/GS in the early 70s with a 354, then a 392... Junkyard finds that were massaged in the garage and sent off to some of the SoCal shops for crank and cam work. Blowers by Don Hampton and lots of advice from guys like Armstrong and Veney

Hey Carl. Any chance you were thinking of the Opal GT ???

Don, I do remember the Opel and hell, I could have been. But I could have sworn I saw the car at the 1-time Dallas Supernationals in 1970, which was before the Opel was built and they were still running the Anglia. Am I old or what. The only thing I remember for dead certain is that it was a red Anglia, the announcer commenting about how rare it was to see a 4 speed AGS and how hard it must have been to drive.

But the article I posted claimed the Panella Trucking car campaigned mostly on the west coast so there's that.

The top picture is the original car that I drove. Chuck Finders and Kibler both crashed it before I drove it. It was a E-ticket ride before roger and bill found the latter bars were bowing when I shifted it into each gear. after that I would at times put it on the rear chrome bumper and it would go straight. Every time I did Mr. Altizer would laugh his ass off, and my late wife would yell at me, DON'T YOU KNOW WHEN TO LIFT. LOL--No. the center crank shaft bolt was 33" off the ground. It was a fun ride. (Blown small block with a B&M transmission)

Larry, what haven't you driven? Lol

I think during of my years in drag racing I have raced in every class in drag racing including (128 MPH in a fuel burning go cart before Lions opened), except for Pro stock, pro mod (they didn't have them), and a jet car, the fire marshal would only let the green mamba make 3 runs that night that Doug Rose had set up for me to make runs, when I pissed him off when I said to him during a confrontation that anyone can drive one of those WEENE ROSTERS.😁
(RIP Doug Rose)
PS: not including 65 MPH in a out house.🤣

Larry, do you realize that the stories your telling are being preserved as long as this website exists? I think the powers at be should also figure out how to preserve them indefinately. Since I became old enough to appreciate the importance of the stories and memories my elders could of or did or didn't tell me I've had some regrets for not taking the time to preserve them before they were gone.
