Distorted Finish Line Pictures

If it's so distorted, why even bother using it?

For that matter, why doesn't the NHRA invest in a high speed camera that will shoot an accurate picture? It can travel from track to track with the Safety Safari.

High speed cars deserve high speed cameras. But at least now that a factual explanation of the distorted finish line photos is known we can be done with conspiracy theories.

Explanation sounds about right. When I watched the PSM race it looked like Tonglet won to me. Then I replayed it on DVR and ran it slowly from frame and again it looked like he won. Then that picture popped up and something didn't seem right, like the photo was distorted, which is fully explained now.

pretty lame with the technology we have now. So basically serves no purpose except to cause controversy

NHRA invest in something ? I got a chuckle out of that one. The last thing they invested in was the 4 sided tree and the blue led stage lights. revolutionary stuff !!!!

^^^^This^^^^ After that mess with Smith and Johnson at Indy, which actually had great still shots that were very clear, you'd think that situation alone would be enough to justify the investment of getting the RIGHT equipment.

I've literally lost count of how many times I've seen people post things about how the electronics never get it wrong, but occasionally they do; that's been proven. Get the proper equipment, set it up precisely in-line with the stripe and be done with it. That way you'll always have a visual reference when the need arises.

Actually, the beams are mounted so low that an egg shape would trip the beam later as the profile would be narrower at the bottom of rotation, just saying........
Also I tend to think it would add a terrible vibration at 190 mph

excellent marketing though

Just typical of the amateurish product the NHRA puts out to the public. Graphics are barely readable, editing is flawed and it seems like the cameras don't catch the action like when ESPN produced the show. The only thing I didn't like with ESPN was the lake scheduling. And now FS1 is starting to do that.
